Life and Death. The gift of Time. We are confronted with ourselves, in these days of confinement. What first felt so abstract, so conceptional is becoming a reality. A new sphere in which nothing is taken for granted anymore. An inpredictable time, where anything can happen. Anything bad, anything good. Suddenly everything is possible. Unimaginable amounts of money are flying around, get spent in light speed, soaked up by the billions. Individual decisions are being made, in the light of life and death. Values are being challenged and redefined. And I wonder. Is this the beginning of the biggest mindshift of our planet? Or will we archive this intimidating experience in a black tiny metal box, with a ‘nightmare’ sticker on it? I went through a variety of phases. Excitement. Fear. Exhaustment. Recalibration. Now I just feel sober. As if a poison left my body. And while people lose their lives, while death is playing russian roulette with us — this raw diamond is showing its potential. Giving us a glimpse of how it would be, if we would be the true masters of our own time. But then, this feels so weird. So unusual. Aren’t we supposed to do all these things, aren’t we supposed to be pulsed by that collective pacemaker? This morning, I honestly believe: We have been given the most precious gift of it all. We are allowed to experience time with a new awareness. We are invited to investigate, to recalibrate, to redesign. And I am nothing else than grateful for the understanding that time and the decision of how to spend this individually portioned gift of time is the most valuable treasure I will ever receive. FAST FASHION AND ITS DEVASTATING IMPACTS There’s no doubt that fast fashion contributes to negative impacts on the environment, including climate change, animal suffering and water pollution. It’s the 2nd largest polluting industry in the world. 20,000 litres of water is used for just 1kg of cotton and it takes 2,700 litres of water to make one cotton shirt, which is enough water for one person to drink in 2 1/2 years. All our jeans, jumpers, jackets etc. are made out of cotton; do we really need them as much as someone needs the drinking water? No. It’s a ridiculous amount of water being wasted on fast fashion, when people are struggling to get just enough water for each day to cook, clean and drink. The Aral Sea lying between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan was once huge with 1000s of fish and the people there could fish for their meals; now there’s camel. The cotton farming has meant that the sea has shrunk so that it’s gone from being around half the size of England, to nearly 64,000 square kilometres of this water disappearing. This is shocking and ALL down to the cotton farm using the water from the river that was feeding the sea, in order to produce tonnes of cotton for our clothes. People have lost their lifestyle, their jobs of selling fish, and their beautiful waters. The dusty banks that are now where the sea once was are dangerous in strong winds as they get into people’s eyes causing harm. As well as the environment being badly affected, humans are also treated badly in the labour of making the clothes. Child labour is often the case for fast fashion, where they are treated awfully and paid very little. The stats are staggering for how fast fashion negatively affects our world; it’s more than we could ever imagine! So, next time you buy fast fashion clothes in a shopping spree please please reconsider what it means for the environment! Remember you have a full wardrobe already, or buy sustainable clothing, or secondhand clothes. What is your obsession with the future? ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ LONK: Every project we do originates from a desire to affect people and stimulate debate on certain topics. This is perhaps the most defining thing about our studio. Researching and speculating on the future of human behaviour and design is not only tremendously interesting, relevant and exciting to do, it can also offer a look into possible futures we may or may not like to find ourselves in. We hope to design experiences that trigger reflection and perhaps even action on this. We like to be a test lab for the future as it were. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Question 2: You say you focus on temporary design, what does that mean? ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Indeed the spaces, installations and exhibitions we build are temporary. Some works may only be on view for a few weeks, while others may travel around the States for a series of months. The point is that we dont build static interiors or buildings. Our designs are always beyond the purely functional or aesthetic, but rather are the bearer of a larger story that we want to highlight. That requires an awe factor, an experience that is out of the ordinary. We do however research and develop design concepts for lasting structures or design collections. Emunctories are organs responsible for elimination of abnormal organic material, waste and toxins. Skin, liver, lungs, kidneys and intestines are primary emunctory organs. The more efficient the process of elimination through the primary emunctory organs, the better chance that the bodys physiological processes are able to function effortlessly and harmoniously. When the process of elimination through the above primary emunctory organs is compromised, waste products and toxins are diverted to secondary locations in the body. The end result is inflammation and disease. Many symptoms such lethargy, brain fog, irritability, bloating, skin problems, constipation, and a multitude of disease conditions and etiologies can be traced back to sub-optimally functioning or diseased emunctories. We will give you a tour of our state-of-the-art winery explaining the production processes involved to create traditional method sparkling wine followed by a tasting from our current range. “Carbon neutral isn’t enough. We have to act faster and with a bigger sense of urgency. We have to do more than simply stop. We have to reverse course.” BrewDog is setting a new bar for sustainability in the beer industry by becoming the world’s first carbon-negative brewery. The Scotland-based brewery is now offsetting its carbon footprint—which was 68,000 tons in 2019—by removing twice as much carbon from the atmosphere as it emits each year. A significant factor in this commitment is the BrewDog forest, a 2,050-acre plot of land in the Scottish Highlands, where BrewDog plans to plant one million trees. Laut Stadtverwaltung konnten bereits 6.000 Tonnen Papier pro Jahr und zwischen 650 und 750 Fahrten der kommunalen Müllabfuhr eingespart werden. ✅💯 Würde ein solches Opt-in-Verfahren in ganz Deutschland umgesetzt, könnten jährlich rund 66.000 Müllabfuhren mit einem Fassungsvermögen von je 12 Tonnen vermieden werden. Good news! A team of scientists from Northwestern University in Illinois (US) have found a way to break down the bonds that make polyethylene. Polyethylene is one of the most common types of plastic. We find it many household products like plastic bags, bottles, etc. The process cuts the plastic polymer turning it into liquid oil. It does that through a catalytic technique using metal nanoparticles to chop the polymer apart. This liquid oil can then be used for other purposes, like lubricant, and scientists are looking into other potential uses. The strong bonds that make polyethylene are what makes plastic so durable. It is why plastic never degrades. WOMEN WHO FARM & FEED US In today’s journal, we hear from @abiaspen ‘s work with heritage grains as Head of Grains at @duchessfarms . Abi was recently on the cover of @obsfood , as part of a feature on four female farmers from the Farms to Feed Us community. This piece is the first of our new, ongoing series ‘Women who Farm and Feed Us’ about the women in food and farming who inspire us.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Heritage grains are one tool in an organic farmers’ box, as they are much better suited to organic systems than ‘industrial’ grains that have been bred to require high chemical inputs to grow. ⠀ ⠀ “”Most of our wheat has been developed for high input systems - you might get 4 or 5 tonnes per acre, but you’ll have to use chemicals for it to grow. ‘Heritage’ grains haven’t been developed for high input systems - they don’t need a lot of fertiliser or insecticides. They grow taller, your yield is lower, but you have a really delicious crop at the end.“⠀ ⠀ Duchess currently produces Einkorn, Lys Brun, Ölands, Popstram, Kil Brun, Spelt, and a variety introduced by #Ourfield, a project founded by 6 females, including Abi, who brought together a collective of 40 people to work with farmer John Cherry on growing a field of wheat each year, sharing the risk and reward. She also works with 4 farmers growing different grains, which Duchess buys back for above the market price; “so they get more than they would if they were selling feed wheat, but put no chemicals on the land.“⠀ ⠀ Better at competing with weeds and with strong, deep roots, the heritage crops are helped along by herbal lays and field rotation, fallow years and not tilling too deeply, whilst 150 acres are left to nature. But in 2020, things are getting real: Chanel just announced that it is investing $35 million in solar energy projects that will benefit low-income Californians.
