She was skipped. Overlooked. Ignored. White male reporters joked she should “save her strength.” Few people know the story of Alice Allison Dunnigan but I think of it nearly every time I enter the White House. I grew up in north India in the 1990s. My Brahmin family was full of government servants who were still carrying the colonial white man’s burden of racial prejudices and superiority complexes. Growing up in the close proximity of a large extended family, I was the only dark child. “Kaali-kaluti, baigan looti / Blacky-black smeared, she robbed the color of an eggplant,” my cousins would taunt when they wanted to have a laugh at my expense. I laughed along with them, eager to fit in. My skin color was particularly concerning to my mother, since we were an upper-caste Brahmin family. Anytime someone would call me dark, my fair-skinned mother would correct them and tell them I was “wheatish,” one of the many euphemisms in India for brown skin. It was her way of comforting herself that her daughter was a tad bit higher in the hierarchy than truly dark people. For this project i asked people to send me a picture with a word or phrase showing something negative that they have seen associated with mental illness. The most common phrase was “attention seeking”. - - I have been called an “attention seeker” on numerous occasions and it made me feel so invalidated which made me keep everything to myself instead of reach out for help. Your mental health struggles do NOT: make you and attention seeker make u manipulative make u a burden make u selfish. AND YOU DO deserve help !! - - The only way to end the stigma is by educating each other on mental health which is what i am hoping to do by creating this project. The terms which are shown in the pictures above can make mental illnesses worse and make recovery a lot harder. - Instead of saying, “You’re so lazy you never clean your room.” Try saying “Are you doing okay? If you’re struggling i could help you tidy your room if you are okay with that?” - Instead of saying, “You’re so selfish, why can’t you just stop self harming because when our family see you’re scars they are going to judge me and say i am a bad parent” Try saying, “I know your struggling with self harm at the moment but is there anything we could do together to keep you distracted or would you feel more comfortable maybe texting me when you have urges so we can work through it together?” - These are only examples and may not work for everyone but instead of instantly labelling someone with negative words try understanding them first by starting a conversation with them instead. - - We can #endthestigma together!!
