It’s so great to see pubs & restaurants bustling again, we are the ultimate food lovers, so are thrilled that our restaurant partners are doing what they do best and serving great food. The problem though is that over the last 8 weeks we’ve seen a massive rise in the uptake of single use condiment sachets 😲 Which we think is totally unnecessary… in the name of hygiene, a ramekin would do the trick, or we have glass bottles that can be wiped down with anti-bac after use. When speaking to one pub group they said that many of their sachets often get thrown away without even being opened, as they were bought to a table, not used, then the waiting staff weren’t sure if they’ve been touched or not 😢 😢 So this is our plea to the industry – and we need your help to amplify. SACHET AWAY. Your customers care about the environment more than ever, so don’t be a tosser by adding to the billions of plastic sachets that head to landfill every year...sachet away. Luscious Leaves Four end rhyme quatrains written in Iambic Pentameter ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••Writing entirely in meter and with as much alliteration as possible is something that I wanted to undertake for the first time. Surprisingly, I couldn’t find any examples of on Google of this having been done, although it surely has, even if seldom. I would highly recommend trying to write alliteration in meter as a one-off challenge. Not just for the gratification of being able to pull it off, but for the likely enhanced appreciation of words and their sounds in the aftermath. I dont know if Ill pursue it again, but Im glad that I did. This piece is also my submission for the current Your Heart Beats Proud prompt, which was to write about Autumn, yet without using the words: Autumn, Fall, Red, Orange, or Yellow. Three sestets, one octave and four refrains written in Iambic Pentameter •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• The first two lines are not fully iambic. Given my chosen topic, I liked the thought of easing in both the melodic rhythm and amount of alliteration that I decided to use. I believe this to be fitting of the topic, as well as appropriate for the Bop form, which is plot driven. I see the gradual introduction of the iambic rhythm and alliteration as resembling the progression of climate change. They then become perfectly linear, much like the tragic course of events that persist until the bitter end, when nature effectively revokes our tenancy to this world. Needless to say, I hope that this doesn’t come to be in the real world and that humanity can change course before its too late. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• This is my submission for round 2 of Poetry Battles All Stars, a one-off version of the competition consisting of previous champions, finalists and standout competitors from throughout the year. These experiences with racism can be direct or indirect and vicarious. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Having a background in behavioral medicine, I’ve seen how essential it is to understand the connection between the mind and body. Mental health issues, including trauma, can manifest in both mental and physical symptoms. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ These symptoms may look familiar to those you typically relate with trauma (e.g., those seen in PTSD or acute stress disorder). Trauma is generally associated with symptoms of intrusion, avoidance, and activation that can present emotionally, physiologically, cognitively, behaviorally, or in combination. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ Racism and other forms of systemic oppression can deteriorate a person’s health both mentally and physically. Climate strikers call for scientific, human rights leadership in Climate Emergency Declaration With Malacañan Palace recently expressing the possibility of declaring a Climate Emergency, Filipino environmental and climate activists who led the Philippines satellite of the global climate strike called for the immediate establishment of a scientific, human rights body to lead the implementation of the declaration. “What else is there to consider when there is both a scientific consensus and a human rights imperative to declare a Climate Emergency in the Philippines? President Duterte must cede the current ‘business as usual’ pathway of leadership to a scientific and human rights body in implementing a climate emergency action plan,” said Leon Dulce, national coordinator of environmental activist group Kalikasan People’s Network for the Environment (Kalikasan PNE). The strikers warned that the past four-year track record of President Rodrigo Duterte, which saw the Philippines become a consistent global air and marine polluter and climate impact-vulnerable nation, cast a shadow of doubt over his political will to declare a Climate Emergency. Our response to @asuprescrow’s 25 actions to address racism: We, the Multicultural Solidarity Coalition, are encouraged by the list of 25 actions you plan to take to address systemic racism at ASU. We are pleased to see pieces of our own proposal reflected in this list, such as the need for a multicultural center and the creation of community fellowships for graduate students. It is also heartening to see what appears to be a deep commitment to the hiring and retention of underrepresented faculty and graduate students from marginalized communities, which is another important piece of our proposal. While we are thankful to see these pieces of our proposal being implemented, we agree with you that “this list of actions will be inadequate by itself.” For these pieces of our proposal to be realized in a way that is true to our intentions and goals, it is necessary for the Multicultural Solidarity Coalition (as the author of these pieces) to be part of the various working groups addressing these points. We look forward to working together with you, the Council of Coalitions, and the Black African Coalition. We are especially motivated to work on some of the other items that also made it to your action list. In fact, they are a source of grave concern to all of us. Points 22 and 25 are actions that are contrary to the spirit and intent of our proposal. We believe that they will likely put Black and other marginalized students at greater risk. Specifically, inviting the Department of Homeland Security into the ASU community negates the intent and spirit of our request to become a sanctuary university. DHS houses ICE and CBP, which are both agencies that put our undocumented students at risk of harassment and deportation. We do not agree that inviting DHS to collaborate with ASU is a step toward greater racial equality in the U.S. In fact we see it as further violence against Black and Brown students. To associate these five weeks with just one warm memory would not do it justice at all. I was assigned two students, Priyanka and Reshma. Priyanka would tell me about her day, her family, her friends and why she likes English so much. Reshma was a bit more reserved, but whenever I called, both she and her sister (Sushma) would be ready to learn. All three of them worked through the day and wouldnt have electricity at night, yet, whenever they got the time, they spoke to me and finished their workbooks, ready with doubts as soon as I call them. Sometimes, because of a number of issues I couldnt contact them for days, yet whenever I called they would be ready with their workbooks saying maam pranam. To watch them learn with this amount of diligence, to listen to their stories, to talk to them and to teach them, cannot possibly be brought down to one memory. She has been affected by this in so many ways. It saddens her to see that young women are being catcalled, raped, groped, and the list goes on. Women are taught to fight rape instead of men being taught not to rape. She chose MBIA because she always wanted to be in pageantry, but she felt the pageants she saw on TV were not genuine. MBIA has shown her sisterhood and a deeper meaning in pageantry. She feels like her knowledge will actually be put to use. Detention and ​deportations have been disproportionately impacting Black immigrants, especially Haitian nationals. During this pandemic hundreds of Haitians have been deported, many of whom tested for COVID-19. Instead of treating and caring for these individuals, they have been violently separated from their families and communities. ​All deportations must end. The 46,000-strong TPS community of Haiti nationals have been targeted by the Trump administration, and we can not stand aside quietly through these anti-Black and xenophobic actions. We demand that all deportations stop, and that detention centers are emptied! “When you uproot a plant, it dies, and to remove #TPS holders and #DACA recipients is to kill their spirit.” Forcing immigrants to remain in detention centers, especially during a pandemic, is not just irresponsible, it is inhumane. Centers are overcrowded, and the transfer of detainees between detention centers further spreads infection. This month, I’m helping Community Town Federation (CTF), a women-led community organization of city-wide informal settlement (‘slum’) dwellers in Korail, Dhaka, reach their goal of $5k. Korail is the largest informal settlement in Bangladesh and is home to over 100,000 residents. These urban farmers and daily-wage earners fall among the millions of Bangladeshis who lost jobs and have no source of income due to COVID-19.
