Ive always had a disdain for instagram. It is a necessity in my line of work, almost like your own mini PR company if utilised properly. But the past few years Instagram has been attracting more and more tone deafness. It has felt acutely more arrogant. Hence why Ive shied away from it. How can you project your picture perfect life when you know how many are suffering and striving to live equally across the planet? But over the last few days my opinion has changed. Ive seen how powerful a tool it can be when used as a tool of protest. The outpouring from everyone has been so moving, this time something does feel different. I hope that is true. If this is the modern way to protest and in these challenging COVID times; we can all protest safely, away from police presence and law breaking. What I’m about to say is my own experience of Living in Scotland as a young black girl. I know we have our own stories to tell but I decided to stop the silence and finally tell mine. Living in Scotland was a great opportunity until I experienced High school where I encountered racism and racial profiling. Being in a school that isolated you because you felt like you didn’t belong in a Predominantly white school and being called all sorts of derogatory words. Because you didn’t belong .When it comes to Scotland, scottish white people tend to pretend that there is no racism in this country, which unfortunately isnt true at all. Racism can come in all forms, not just getting called a nigger or slave. Now, i would like to use my platform to shed light on this issue and possibly be a voice for those who are defenseless. You are not alone. Let your voice be heard! Make sure to make it normal for little black girls to hear that theyre beautiful, that their natural hair AND SKIN is beautiful. It can take only one experience to change the perspective of black children on society. If youre struggling with insecurities or low self esteem, let me remind you that youre beautiful and unique. These past weeks I’ve had many convos with all my girlfriends & made some new connections that are black women stylists or colorists from around the country. (I’m so excited I made fwwwiends 😭& women of color that do what do, same struggles). All of us have large plans & wanted to work in the upper echelon of the hair and beauty industries in hopes we could be apart of it someday and seen for our work as black Women, no matter the client palette, to have the versatility we hadn’t seen large scale. These industries, as we have been seeing are very segregated and finally catching themselves with their pants down in public. The one question we have all Kiki’d about has been - why isnt there more diversity? We got up here? Where the brown folks at? Where the brown clients?! Wait why can’t I get any brown folks to come see me and feel comfortable in the salon space?! (Time goes by in a high end salon) Ooooohhh I seeeee! Salon stereotypes are true - DAMMMN IT - then we came to a consensus, PEOPLE THINK THAT B/C IM BLACK I ONLY DO BLACK HAIR - But then the flip side! “YOUR PAGE HAS NO BLACK PEOPLE, CAN YOU EVEN DO BLACK OR CURLY HAIR?” | We can’t win! Since high school, not black enough yet not white enough. People have assumed I only do haircuts, I must braid really well, know how to do wigs, must wear wigs myself and probably haven’t colored my hair much, scuse me my real hair 🙄 LET ME CLEAR BOTH SIDES UP REAL QUICK, especially for the folks that say they support my work as a black stylist then don’t support b/c not every post is a black person or someone clearly ethnic enough to please them. Stop. First off. I’m a colorist. Hair color is my world, the science of it and soothing shades that influence our beings. My job is my job. My price is my price. I’ve earned my way and fought to learn all I could on every type & texture to be confident & inclusive, what I didn’t have. THAT is why I call myself a hair dresser, bring it. So let me say this now. This essay is a rare offering in that it is meant for all white and non-Black lens based artists and publications. Now is the time to reconfigure yourselves or you WILL get reconfigured. Now is certainly not the time to start throwing work at Black artists that’s not thoughtful or beneficial. Now is not the time to release idiotic statements about your consistent reliance on racism, that offers up temporary promises of doing better (thinking specifically of that foolishness of a letter from one Ms. Wintour.) Now is the time to sit quietly and listen. Stew in your discomfort, in your guilt. Share it with YOUR community of non-Black people.
