Na mesma semana que a @academiaportuguesacinema decidiu não se render à pandemia e entregar os seus prémios, fui pela primeira vez ao cinema, de máscara, distanciada dos outros e de mãos desinfetadas. As condições ainda me incomodam mas na verdade não estragaram nem um bocadinho o filme de Mário Barroso, A ordem moral. Até há pouco tempo era frequente dizer que gostava de fazer mais cinema, agora , depois disto tudo, o que eu gostava mesmo era que continuasse a haver cinema português nas salas do nosso país. Para me comover com o talento dos meus colegas , como a Maria de Medeiros que está brilhante neste filme, mas não só, também com um bom argumento, as caracterizações, o guarda roupa, a fotografia, a edição, o som, a música, a direção de arte e forma como aquela história é contada pelo olhar de um(a) realizador(a). Que continuem a haver razões para os prémios Sophia existirem e para todos nos vestirmos bem nesta noite e ouvirmos discursos, uns mais emocionantes que outros e celebrarmos o trabalho de tanta gente. Portanto , na próxima vez que forem ao cinema, quando estiverem a olhar para os cartazes e a escolher o que vão ver, escolham aquele filme português que está lá no meio. After winning a talent contest on the television music show Bandstand she moved to the USA in 1966. Twenty-seven music labels rejected her before she signed with Capitol Records in 1970, but over the course of the decade she was to achieve fourteen US Top 40 singles including three number ones. Her best known song is the anthem for womens liberation, I am Woman, inspired by Australian feminist and rock journalist Lillian Roxon. This picture shows Germano Celant at the exhibition “Young Italians”, which I curated at the Italian Cultural Institute in New York in 2018. The exhibition was jointly organized by the Italian Cultural Institute and Magazzino Italian Art. In the picture, together with Germano Celant, there are Claudia Gould (the director of the Jewish Museum, New York), Nancy Olnick and Giorgio Spanu (co-founders of Magazzino Italian Art), and I (in the background, on the left). I was so happy and honoured by the Germano Celant‘s presence at the opening of this exhibition curated by me. Now, a few months after his death, I would like to remember him on the occasion of his birthday: in fact, he would have been 80 today. With his death last 29th April, we lost the most important Italian curator and a real monument of the Post-War and Contemporay art history. Esse dia representa a nossa manifestação pela busca da inclusão, e também pelo direito a sermos inseridos e entendidos como cidadãos comuns. Por aqui sempre costumo dizer que nada é óbvio, mas também que o óbvio precisa ser discutido e explicado, essa é a minha luta. Quebrar e romper o capacitismo, gerar pensamentos inclusivos, e trazer a mensagem para as pessoas de que não somos perfeitos e que a beleza está aí. Hoje também quero agradecer a minha querida @celialeaooficial que é secretaria de Estado dos direitos da pessoas com deficiência e que me ofereceu a oportunidade de estar trabalhando, aprendendo e compartilhando ao seu lado. Writing down a list of all the actions/tasks we do in a day – the time we take to perform them – gives us clarity on where our hours go. If you are not filling your day with high priority inspiring actions, your day will fill up with meaningless distractions. I lost my friend Nancy 19 years ago in the 9/11 terrorist attack. She raced on my wife’s cycling team and I raced on another in NYC. Nancy and I were on an early morning training ride together in Central Park that day. I remember the beautiful fall weather. We talked about life, our gigs, and whatnot. Nancy would say things like, “Of all the things you could’ve done with your life, you chose to make TV commercials?” And I loved her for it. She was a driven, blunt, fiery, and bold spirit destined to make a big mark in this world. Nancy decided to peel off last-minute after a few laps to get into work early at her trading desk in the World Trade Center. It was the last I ever saw her. Later that day, we received an email from her father asking her entire contact list if anyone had heard from his daughter, hoping she got out before the towers fell. As a friend, I knew she was gone. And now, as a father, I can only imagine his despair and anguish writing that email. Yet never giving up hope in his search because that’s what parents do. 🙄 No, it’s not anti-Catholic to ask Amy Coney Barrett about her religious group “People of Praise.” (They literally referred to their female leaders as “handmaids.”) 🙄 Members of the Christian right are lobbying hard for President Trump to tap 7th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court. A current Notre Dame law school professor, 48-year-old Barrett is a devout Catholic and mother of seven children, two of whom were adopted from Haiti and one who is a child with Down syndrome—all attributes that conservatives see as evidence that she will help overturn Roe v. Wade if confirmed. But Barrett brings another resume entry to the table that, while possibly enhancing her appeal to evangelicals, makes her an unusual candidate for the job. She’s a member of People of Praise, a charismatic covenant community (that some may have even called culty 👀) in South Bend, Indiana. Though most of its members are Catholic, its practices, including speaking in tongues and faith healing, draw more from fundamentalist and evangelical Christianity than the Vatican. One of its most notable features is the submissive role played by women, some of whom were called “handmaids”—at least until the Handmaid’s Tale aired in 2017, At that point, the group started referring to them as “women leaders.” According to accounts of former members, People of Praise involves much more than studying the Bible. Indeed, some are deeply troubled by the possibility of one of the group winning a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court. When Barrett’s name was floated as a potential candidate two years ago, a post appeared in a Facebook group of ex-members of charismatic Christian communities. “I don’t want a current member of this cult to be sitting on the Supreme Court,” the onetime People of Praise member wrote. Auch ich habe diese Formate schätzen gelernt und wünsche mir, dass die neue Vielfalt geistlichen Lebens bestehen bleibt. Vielleicht haben etliche auch gemerkt, dass ihnen der sonntägliche Gottesdienst gar nicht fehlt? Wird #Gott in der Welt nach #Corona noch weniger gefragt sein als bisher? 2019 haben 270 000 Menschen der evangelischen Kirche den Rücken gekehrt, fast so viele, wie #Wiesbaden Einwohner hat. Andererseits engagieren sich viele in kirchlichen Projekten, die noch nie Mitglied in der Kirche waren oder ausgetreten sind. The countless hours I have spent enrapt in a cocoon of feeling, hypnotized by any one of Nick Cave’s musical incarnations are an anchor for my survival. Looking ahead is not always an easy thing to do, especially in the rapidly changing environment that we live in today. For congregations, it can be a struggle to know how to continue to reach out to their communities and share the gospel in meaningful ways. The PCC has developed a network of coaches to help congregations and ministries to discover where God is calling them. Through programs like New Beginnings and the Evangelism Network, congregations can be connected with a coach to guide them into an exciting new era of ministry. To say ‘it was a day to remember’ is both a cliched understatement and evidence of the challenge to capture what an extraordinary time this was with an extraordinary woman. The interview was sponsored by the Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture Series. Justice Ginsburg was honored with the Meredith College Woman of Achievement Award at the beginning of the evening. First Time Mom in Paris ——————— In this relatively old photo, I had the smile of a clueless first-time mom who trusted her instinct. I landed in Paris as a trailing spouse for a multiple-year overseas assignment only to discover couple of weeks later that I am pregnant with my first child. Uncountable miles away from my immediate family and alien in a foreign land, I had to figure it all out on my own! How daunting that could be?! This morning I was going through photos for painting ideas. I recall I was especially in love right at the moment this photo was taken (with my guy, with where I was, with life). Then I started to really look at the palette of colors behind me - the cool reds, greens and blues, the rich creamy whites, the small dots of vibrant orange, even the contrast to the black I’m wearing - just these colors are more than enough to inspire my next pieces. Now I’m wondering if it might be interesting to develop a series, or maybe even a few different series, based on colors that are true to a region. The buildings in Paris, for example. The wheat fields in Canada. The villas in Spain. Morocco! Greece!! Africa!!! It’s endless. The color palettes I think of from those places makes my heart beat a little faster. Inspiration for contemporary art comes from so many places, doesn’t it? Today, as I look at three fresh panels, primed and ready, I’m drawing my inspiration from the colors in this garden of the Chateau de Villandry, in the Loire Valley of France. This is a photo of Dr Stella Rudolph, one of the most pre-eminent art historians of her generation. Today, I found out she died on the 17th May in Florence where she’d lived for 45 years. How did we meet? Well, I was in need of an art historian for my next book - one who had been in Florence during the flood of ‘66 - and I happened to mention this to Cristina my acupuncturist at the time. She got in touch with @monicacapuani_ who got in touch with someone else who put me in touch with Stella. I called her whilst standing outside the Galileo Museum one hot May afternoon in 2018 and visited her the next day with bottles of red wine and Prosecco - I thought she’d be a fan of one or the other. We sat in her dark studio, surrounded by books and masterpieces and I loved her immediately. Youthful, charming, intelligent, joyous, eccentric. No one like you, Stella. And that was it. Two privileged years of conversation, wine, coffee, wandering. Things we talked about: the church of San Firenze, Carlo Maratta, attribution, rosato frizzante, St Francis, bells, Assisi, Giambologna, 1966 Flood, nature, swallows, onset of spring, Michelangelo (!) Antoni Ciseri’s Sleeping Joseph, Baroque art, perfection, beauty, the value of continuity, gratitude, enrichment, preference for skirts and tights. We wandered the city and I asked you questions and made you laugh and I scribbled notes and you gave me the most extraordinary language of ideas. I was planning a trip this December to see you when I found out that you’d no longer be at the end of a telephone or an apartment door bell. But I shall come and say goodbye properly.
