It turned out that I and my friend Barrett were welcome to come backstage as well. We were escorted into an empty room about an hour before the show, and in a minute or so, Bruce pops in the door, enthusiastically grabs each of us in a handshake, makes sure he knows our names, and we start yakking away. Dana is the alpha male here because he controls what the station plays, but Bruce makes sure to include Barrett and me in the conversation, which lasted 20 minutes or more. He couldnt have been nicer or more welcoming. We were all kind of blown away to be honest. Even Dana who had met dozens of major players in the music biz! Oh by the way, the show was spectacular! His shows were not yet the marathon 4 hour spectacles they morphed into later, but he played about 25 songs. Critics have said this tour was the impetus for him reaching major stardom. SJCFTPA was a 2,400 seat venue. It was the last time I would see him in such a small place. - @chbradfo on Instagram

TBS programming is designed by two artists/designers/educators with over twenty years of combined experience as multi-hyphenate creators and educators. In more ancient millennial news…it’s the 25th anniversary of Hackers next week, so I wrote about the costumes for @garage_magazine and talked to the film’s costume designer (and legendary rock n’ roll stylist) Roger K. Burton @contemporarywardrobe! When Hackers came out, I was a teen coming off the fashion high of one Cher Horowitz, still trying to procure the ideal plaid skirt set, not knowing that I’d soon be trying to convince my mom to let me get my helix pierced like Angelina Jolie’s Hackers character, Kate Libby. Angelina would soon become a style and life icon of mine. (I would even do an informative speech on her in class at some point and bring in my Gia VHS to play a scene.) Her silver armour ring, by Chicago-based jewelry brand Marché Noir, became a sort of holy grail to teen-me, and I ended up getting one (from Hot Topic) and it became one of my signature accessories. (I even wore it to prom with a pink, tulle princess dress and white Doc Martens.) This didn’t make final edits, but I loved Burton’s story about how Angelina’s iconique pixie haircut came to be: According to Burton, Jolie was not 100% on board with doing the movie at first. “I was sent over to actually try and, you know, talk her into it basically,” says Burton. He came over with mood boards and talked about his work on music videos with David Bowie, and she began to warm up to the idea. “It was like a light bulb kind of went off all of a sudden,” says Burton. “She said, ‘Well, obviously, I cant have long hair. Im gonna have to have a really good haircut.” Burton also directed me to this INCREDIBLE Hackers fan site called @hackerscurator. At first I thought it was from the ‘90s, it looks so authentic! The site’s founders, Erik Meredith and Jenn Werkhoven, collect and recreate many of the costumes and props from the movie. Erik made an exact replica of Cereal Killer’s yellow Motorola pager and Jenn even has same kind of rollerblades Angelina uses. On this day Aug 26th last year, I was blessed to perform with @lizzobeeating and a slew of phenomenal beautiful Black women. This performance was really so much more than what you all got to see, we really did it for us. I have a special place in my heart for Lizzo, especially bc of our pre show day rehearsal. We sat down and said WHAT IS REALLY GOOD WITH US? And had the most emotional, vulnerable, raw therapy sessions amongst what felt like sisters. My confidence & belief in me has shifted forward from that day & every day. To stand proudly in my body, in my skin, and in my truth. It is no tale that society excludes so many. We are obsessed with putting ourselves in categories. I have never felt like any 1 category. I come from a european mother & a black/hispanic caribbean father, my sign is on the cusp of 2 zodiacs, and my family tried to practice 2 very different religions growing up (WALLIN). This world can confuse you, identity is hard. Especially when your identity was once not accepted and now a fetish. This performance was for beautiful full body brown skinned girls, and at first I felt I did not fit the category. During our therapy sesh @lizzobeeating looked me in my eyes and told me “Your struggle is so understandable, but the truth is you are a black woman. You being up there is important to represent for other black women just like you, you are important” Honestly i needed that. I stepped on & off that staged feeling GOOD AS HELL. A truly mind blowing experience to hear that crowd roar. Shoutout to all these beautiful fucking women. A big ass group of inspiration I like to call it. I Cant wait to share another moment with you Queens🤎 Special thanks to @jemelmcwilliams @kiiraharper @craiggyweggy @theshelbyswain & the whole Lizzo Team Shoutout to the Hair team, yall the realest. Opening night, December 20, 1981, at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre. The musical starred Jennifer Holliday as Effie White, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Deena, and Loretta Devine as Lorell. I needed to learn how to sing with my Black Woman Voice. And for years, I internalized it. I damaged my voice trying to belt and scream. I spent two years refusing to sing in public because I viewed myself as a joke. I actually felt some shame from trying to sing soprano love songs when I knew I didnt look like the characters they were meant for. I want to release that, and I will with time. #tbt In 1990 I wrote the song #leavethegunsathome with @greg_phillinganes_live which we then recorded with Al Green @royalstudiosmemphis in Memphis. Willie Mitchel was there and helped keep the 24 track rolling when it seemed to be lagging. ( that’s a whole other story). But when we released the track in 1991 Al and I got the opportunity to meet up with James Brady, Reagan’s press press secretary who had been paralyzed in the Reagan’s assassination attempt and later started an organization that wrote and helped pass the Brady Bill. We met with him in Harlem’s Abyssinian Baptist Church after having breakfast @sylviassoulfoodbrand - can you imagine having breakfast there with Al Green?? Line out the door. Its Selectahs night and we embark on a deep and colorful musical journey conducted by top playaz @mattbovey aka Satta B and @sunnywray from Regal Disco. Big fun! 🍷🎶 SUNDAY 27th. We are happy to host this very special daytime event (from 1pm) that combines tasting of high quality and low intervention natural wines, some foodie treats and the always classy grooves of our beloved @arigood2b on the decks.
