Black Soprano Appreciation Post! 1. Deniece Williams - R&B 2. Minnie Riperton - R&B 3. Jessye Norman - Opera 4. Leontyne Price - Opera 5. Audra McDonald - Broadway As soon as I reached puberty, I was constantly told that my lyric soprano voice doesnt match my body and it needed to be changed. I needed to learn how to sing with my Black Woman Voice. And for years, I internalized it. I damaged my voice trying to belt and scream. I spent two years refusing to sing in public because I viewed myself as a joke. I actually felt some shame from trying to sing soprano love songs when I knew I didnt look like the characters they were meant for. I want to release that, and I will with time. More on that later.... But what is a Black Voice anyway? There isnt just one. Just many beautiful Black Voices! Here are some legendary and beautiful Black Sopranos who inspire me.
