Heard that there were a couple of Grey Nurse sharks hanging round the bay so had to jump in and have a look around. Every single time that theyve been around they always manage to elude me, except for this time. Jumped in the water swam out about 50 metres and stumbled across a juvenile straight away. 🐠🐟 Happy Fish Friday! 🐠🐟⠀ ⠀ Today we have the majestic Black-tip reef shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus)! 🦈 ⠀ Here are a few fun facts about them:⠀ ⠀ 1. These guys get their name from the distinct dark patch on the tip of their first dorsal fin and lower caudal fin lobes. ⠀ ⠀ 2. They can be found in shallow marine waters usually in association with coral reefs. These species have been recorded from the central coast of Western Australia, all the way around the tropical North and down to Southern Queensland! 🤩⠀ ⠀ 3. They can grow to just over 2m long but are usually an average length of 1.5m. Newborn pups measure about 40-50cm long – how cute!! 🥰⠀ ⠀ 4. Blacktip reef sharks are viviparous – this means they give birth to live young instead of eggs! They have around 10 pups each year. ⠀ ⠀ The IUCN has listed the blacktip reef shark as Near Threatened, but say there are much lower numbers than predicted. A 360 camera records this tiger sharks movements like never before. Deployed last month during a film shoot for @sharkweek, everything here is custom assembled, meaning many hours were spent each night testing out the ballast and flotation of the bio-logger package before we put it out in this female tiger shark. The entire package comes off the shark after 1 day, leaving nothing - the only kicker: we need to go find the tag. It’s always an adventure - this tag popped 10 miles away in the deep. Recently, I have had the opportunity to get out on the water and fly the lab drone. 🥳 Got some pretty sweet shots of a great hammerhead coming up to eat a bit of lady fish. I also shot this juvenile tiger release, after capture on one of our standardized long lines. Shark finning is one of the world’s most destructive fishing practices. According to the Hong Kong Shark Foundation, more than 100 million sharks are caught worldwide every year for their fins and other products, while more than 50% of the world’s shark fin is traded through Hong Kong alone. Now, a new study by researchers at the Florida International University (FIU) has found that much of the shark fin sold in Hong Kong contained unsafe levels of mercury, exceeding government limits. “The mercury levels are, on average, six to 10 times higher than what is considered a safe level of mercury,” says FIU student marine biologist Laura Garcia Barcia, one of the study’s co-authors. Australians this should be your no 1 environmental issue to focus on. - @voodoochildo Research conducted by scientists from University of Queensland and the Australian Institute of Marine science (AIMS) indicates the ability of the Great Barrier Reef to recover from bleaching events and other ecological and biological disturbances is notably decreasing. The Queensland researchers analysed data from 1992 to 2010 and found that the average rate of recovery across the Great Barrier Reef showed a six-fold decline during that time period. With the frequency of coral bleaching and other disturbances affecting the reef predicted to increase in the coming years, there is a strong need for scientists and conservationists to work together to improve management of the Reef, the quality of the water entering the ecosystems, fight against the sources of climate change and find ways in which the reef system can adapt or fight these changing conditions now and, for the future. - @protectthereefofficial on Instagram

They are caught incidentally and commercially targeted for their valuable fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. Great hammerheads are particularly threatened by the global shark fin trade because of the large size of their fins. More than 90 percent of great hammerheads die once they are captured by targeted or incidental fisheries. This high mortality rate, along with the shark’s coastal habitat and highly valued fin, makes the great hammerhead shark endangered with extinction. Reaching over 35 million viewers every year, all of this attention comes with both good and bad and the consequences of shark week have become more controversial in the eyes of conservationists. . The fearful mentality and constant talk about “shark attacks” however, has had some negative impacts on the way that sharks are widely perceived. In a world where over 100 million sharks are killed each year and populations are rapidly declining it is more important than ever that we quickly shift from the unrealistic monsters we make them out to be to a more accurate depiction of the animals that are the backbone of marine ecosystems. . Some great news from the island nation of Niue in the South Pacific with the formal designation of 40% of their waters as a no-take reserve this week. The Moana Mahu Marine Protected Area at 127,000 is a huge step for ocean conservation with Niue calling for other nations to follow suit.
