Last year’s Recon Challenge was a 28-mile endurance course where Recon Marines aboard Camp Pendleton, California endure a myriad of challenges and tests. With 50 pounds of gear, to a grueling 1K open ocean swim in the frigid Pacific Ocean, Marines are tasked with a number of challenges along the way, including obstacle courses, weapons manipulation, and swim tactics. A total of 26 two-man teams competed this year, each team wearing the name of a fallen Recon Marine on their packs. 2019 we also had a team of 12 current and prior Reconnaissance Marines compete with a team member that was wounded while on active duty overseas. ..... When I got out, I kept the big picture in mind, doubling my salary in less than 3 years, buying a house, taking 21 credits in college, not getting less than an A in anything but one class, graduating dual honors. . When I started OVROUT, I kept the big picture written out on my “desk” and continue to do so despite all of the ups and downs. . When I became an outside sales rep in the construction industry in the NYC market, I was told I was too young and would fail. I kept the big picture in mind, and continue to succeed to this day. . The typical 1-reload-1 drill is a decent metric to test your emergency reload speed. However, often times anticipating a reload after a single shot may not give a full representation of your emergency reload speed, nor is it a realistic situation. I have had the honor to work with hundreds of Military Working Dog Handlers in my career preparing them and their partners to deploy to places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Out of all of those that I have worked with, Chris stood out to me as leader. I had the priveliage to work with Chris one on one in Yuma, Arizona preparing for what would ultimately be his last deployment to Afghanistan. Chris stayed after class with me to put in the extra work with his Military Working Dog, MWD Dino, because he was a professional and knew he was responsible for saving the lives young U.S. Marines. Rushing to the aid of a fallen Marine, Chris was killed in action on this date in 2011. 19 years ago today, the world changed. I was 11 and I couldnt understand how someone could harbor so much hate for an entire nation and culture on the other side of the planet. Over these long years of war, one fueled by blood and treasure, my perspective has changed. I see more clearly the gaping maw of endless war and the profiteers that line their pockets as young men and women die on foreign soil, hunting for American ideals of freedom, courage, patriotism, and honor. “The war on terror” could our objectives be any more vague? Are we winning? Is there less terror in the world? What freedoms have we collectively sacrificed in the name of security? Will we ever get to travel with our shoes on again?? Those that have served in these last 2 decades will hold a special place in history. We are the bulwark separating two distinct eras - pre and post 9/11. We are the vanguard that preserves the memory of life before war, and the horrors of war itself. We are like the ww2 generation; Living relics of stories in the history books. Children will learn of this war from the pages of a text book. They will learn of dates, places, and generals that speak in staccato sentences, about troop movements, and casualties, but they will eventually forget the personal significance of such events. In the same way the Peloponnesian war has dissolved into an amalgam of facts and figures, The War on Terror will also become history written by the winners, crooks, and academics. My question for you is....what are you going to do about it? “....Russian snipers are enjoying constant, specialized training, the Army and Marine Corps don’t even make sniping a primary military occupational specialty, resigning sharpshooting to a backseat skill set rather than one worth honing to its logical extreme. Indeed, Wade points out that only 30 percent of the Marine Corps’ sniper billets at the moment are filled with graduates of the service’s Scout Sniper Course. “If you’re not going to make someone a full-time sniper, then it’s your personnel and training that will end up holding you back,” Wade says. “The technology is in estimation the same, with an edge to the Russians, but you need to turn sniping into a true profession, cradle to grave.
