There are countless stories that illustrate what a one of a kind person Luke was, but Ill share this one as it always makes me smile… We were in our first week of shooting the Riverdale pilot. Luke wasnt due to work until the following week – I knew this because I was an enormous fan and nervous to direct him. That day we were doing some exterior work and suddenly I noticed Luke on set walking towards me. I panicked and turned to my AD Jim – what’s Luke doing here? Hes not working today! Jim turned white – clearly he had the same thought I did – someone had screwed up. As Jim went to find out what had happened, I watched Luke from afar – I noticed he now had a C-stand in one hand and a sandbag in the other. I tried to focus on the shot we were setting up, but I was thrown. I turned back again to see Luke, now draping a warming jacket over Lili. Jim returned looking baffled and said, Luke wasnt called. He just wanted to come by to introduce himself and help out. We were both stunned. In all our years combined Jim nor I had ever heard of an actor doing that. As I got to know Luke better, I realized this was not an isolated event. It wasnt an act. He did little things like this every day. It was just the kind of guy he was. Along with the big acts there were other sweet idiosyncrasies, all of which made the world around Luke better. One of my favorites after I offered some direction – hed smile and nod and quickly say – “here it comes! I always loved that. Like he was thrilled with your note and excited to deliver on it. He brought that kind of eternal positivity to everything he did. The last time I spoke to Luke was when he called to see how my newborn son was doing. As a new dad myself, I think thats the hardest part about losing him. I know what a dedicated father he was – I dont remember a single conversation we had where he didnt bring up his two kids and beam with pride as he shared stories about them. So here’s to being as good a friend, colleague, and parent as Luke was. To the impossibly high bar he set in all those categories I say, “here it comes!” - @ltkrieger on Instagram
