After the Ancestral Pueblo people left the site in the late 13th century, Cliff Palace slowly deteriorated from the effects of water, wind, freeze/thaw cycles, differential fill levels, a variety of animals, spalling of the alcove roof, and the inherent qualities of the prehistoric structures themselves. Over the course of six centuries, Cliff Palace was visually transformed from an imposing assemblage of buildings, courtyards, and subterranean kivas to an array of stone structures rising from tons of rubble and debris. Still remarkably impressive, the effects of time were nevertheless evident. However, with the discovery of Cliff Palace in the late 1800s; and prior to becoming a national park in 1906, this gradual process of decay rapidly accelerated. Casual visitors and exploiters used everything from pick and shovel to dynamite in an effort to recover all types of artifacts from the site. The natural processes of deterioration were now being altered by human activity as well. Vasily Kochetkov - a Russian military man who lived 107 years and participated in 10 wars, a soldier of three emperors (Alexander I, Nicholas I, Alexander II), a participant in the Napoleonic War, the Russo-Turkish War, the war with the Polish rebels, The Caucasian war, etc . Vasily Kochetkov (1785-1892) was born In the Simbirsk Province in the family of a soldier. He entered military service on March 7th 1811. During the patriotic war of 1812 Kochetkov fought in the ranks of Life - Grenadier Regiment at Borodin, then particapted in a foreign campaign, fought near Leipzig and took Paris. . In 1820 he was moved to life - guard Pavlosky Regiment and fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29. Particapted in the war with the Polish Rebels where in 1831 Kochetkov particapted in the Assault of Warsaw. . By 1833 he was transferred to the Life Guards Equestrian Pioneer Division. To disband this unit, in 1843, Kochetkov was sent to the Caucasian theater of war, for training on fast rivers the proper descent, guidance, strengthening and dismantling of pontoon bridges. . During the year, Kochetkov was twice wounded: right through the neck and both legs with crushing of the left lower leg, but each time he returned to duty. In the battles at the village of Dargo in 1845, he was again wounded in the left shin and was captured by the highlanders. After being held captive for nine months and 23 days, Kochetkov fled when the wound healed, showing miracles of resourcefulness, for which he was awarded the 4th degree St. Georges Cross. . In 1851, Kochetkov retired, but two years later he returned to service again in connection with the outbreak of the Crimean War, having fallen into the Kazan Jaeger Regiment. He was among the defenders of Sevastopol, and was again wounded due to an explosion. . At the end of the war, by personal decree of Alexander II, Kochetkov was transferred to the Life Guards Dragoon Regiment, and in 1862 he was enrolled in the honorary company of the palace grenadiers. . Joe Foley of Toledo, Ohio Aug 3 1927 from QPA Queer Photo Archive of @jenniolsonsf The story of Joe Foley resembles so many others — in these tales of adventure as given in the mainstream newspapers we always have the sense that it was not possible for these folks to share their real stories. Over and over we get accounts saying that they only dressed as men to be safe or to get to work jobs or do things that women were not allowed to do. Recognizing such a vivid kinship in their faces one imagines there was a lot more to their stories than this. So many of these courageous people also had romantic relationships with women (an aspect the papers do not explore further beyond simply mentioning it). Whatever their gender identity or sexuality we can definitely agree — they all had awesome haircuts. Here’s the original 8x10 newswire photo of Joe looking dapper in button down shirt and tie and with a smart part in that Vitalis slicked back hair, second image is their AFAB name and crime (“arrested in Toledo dressed as boy”) on the back of the photo, third and fourth images are news coverage of the time (“She [sic] had a great time fooling the girls.”). Note that many of these photos are marked up with a kind of White-out paint which was presumably meant to improve the way the photo reproduced in newsprint (looong before the existence of Photoshop). Standard contextual note of the week: it’s not clear that this amazing person would have necessarily identified as butch. Tho we also don’t know they would have identified as trans in our contemporary understanding of that identity either. Mr. Florentine Ariosto Jones Born in New Hampshire 1841. He fought in the Civil War as an enlisted man in 13th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. He gave his occupation as “watchmaker”, and there is a photograph in the Library of Congress that may be of the young Jones holding a pocket watch. There is a resemblance to a photograph we know to be of him as an older man. . •Soon after the war was over, he worked for E. Howard & Co., one of the best watch companies in the USA, rising to the position of Superintendent. However, in 1867 he went to Europe looking for a place to begin his own company. His goal was to combine “all the excellence of the American system of mechanism with the more skillful hand labor of the Swiss” to produce watches for the American market. . •Jones crossed the atlantic to build his own manufacture in Switzerland. He met Moser in Le Locle and the seed for the first watch company in the northeast of Switzerland was planted. In 1869, Jones rented a building that belonged to Moser in the Rheinstrasse, and in 1874 he was already expanding to a new plant.
