Mount Rushmore was created by a white supremacist with ties to the KKK. Of the four white men depicted, two brutally enslaved hundreds of Africans, the third was a champion of eugenics and an aggressive imperialist, the fourth — the “good” one —approved the hanging of 38 Dakota Native American men, the largest government sanctioned mass execution in U.S. history. While Trump and his supporters wail about “thugs” who dare to vandalize concrete structures in city centers, Rushmore was dynamited into land long considered sacred, a desecration on top of a theft. And now, in the midst of a raging pandemic, Trump insists on staging an event at this site for thousands of people, putting local tribal communities at risk in an area with limited access to hospitals. It’s no surprise that Trump is also ignoring the threat of wildfires — but let’s make sure this made-for-TV spectacle of patriotism is his last.
