I think if you had told me a year or two ago that I’d feel the way I do right now, about life, about skateboarding and about myself in general, I wouldnt have believed you for one second. Things have been far from ‘perfect’ (whatever that is meant to mean) for the last few years. I’d lost my identity, made some big mistakes and plastered over the cracks with all the wrong fillers. It’s taken me a little while to find an authentic version of myself again and to admit that my identity is intrinsically linked to the four-wheeled-plank and many of the things that revolve around that. Like a lot of you that suffer from various forms of depression and anxiety, I hid away because I felt like a burden and I didn’t trust myself to not accidentally push people away further. I have pushed some people away and I’m making some amends to those folks as I am able. I’m also glad I am able to speak about this stuff because, as has been proved to me recently, there are very many of you feeling very similar things. I think helping people to feel like they are not alone in their struggle is just the beginning of the conversation we are now having. I’m glad I stuck around to see this version of myself and I hope that that is in some way inspiring to anyone who is finding it difficult to believe things can get better. They can; I absolutely promise you. It might not be easy or quick, but it is possible. I’ve had help from lots of my old friends, and support, reassurance and advice from many new ones. One person, above all others has gotten me to this place. @phil.hill.talks was patient with me and was able to use their own struggle to help me with mine, the way I hope I can help others. Thank you Phil, without you, I don’t believe I’d be here to tell this part of the story 😘 I still don’t have consistently good days and I feel like I fail regularly but I do now know that this smile is possible and authentic and that being authentic is the best anyone can ever hope or dream for in this life. Navazujeme tím na zapomenutou dílnu v pražské Libni, která v minulosti tvořila individuální brýle pro české bohémy, inteligenci a významné osobnosti. V této dílně se brýlařskému řemeslu vyučili naši přední a dnes již neznámí návrháři brýlí, kteří navrhovali celou plejádu československých obrub putujících na východ a západ, a které jsme šťastnou náhodu pro publikum objevili v rámci přípravy publikace o československém brýlařském designu CZECHOSLOVAK EYEWEAR EAST. Magical Thinking, 1998, oil on linen, 42 x 87 in Eliot on the school bus looking through the window. Back then, I’d pack his lunch with carrots and fruit roll-ups and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in a brown paper bag with a new drawing for him everyday.. a zany portrait of him.. or an elaborate old smiley faced man. I’d stand below the window and watch him.. getting settled on the bus, finding his seat and going off to school.. there was just something melancholy about the way that he would leave every morning.. our separation through the glass, him passing with the reflections of the neighborhood houses and trees.. the other kids on the bus being irreverent and doing all the things that school kids do. We did this for years. Those days.. so mundane when they were happening.. are irretrievable. Appreciate every moment!
