What would you like to have a repeat photo of? Maybe you’d want to see how your neighborhood has morphed, how a favorite view has changed, or even how your family has aged. We often think of repeat photos as a way to measure glacial retreat, but taking two photos in the same spot at different times can reveal many types of information. One way that researchers in Glacier National Park use repeat photography is to observe changes in vegetation. Because the type and success of vegetation in an area is a product of factors like temperature, precipitation, snowpack, and soil quality, changes in vegetation give us important data about the conditions in that place. In these pictures of Hidden Lake you can see that between 1930 and 2009 evergreen trees colonized large parts of the lower slopes of Bearhat Mountain. An increase in tree cover, like you see here, suggests that the area experienced warming and/or a decrease in snowpack during that time. A smaller snowpack will melt earlier in the summer, which gives a tree more time to grow before frost hits. Glacier’s high elevation areas will continue to see changes to vegetation that will have wide-reaching effects on the ecosystem. #GlacierMovingForward Image 1: T.J. I have always found this photo of the excavation of a statue of #Antinous at Delphi (1894), incredibly moving. It’s as if beauty is re-emerging from the earth after a long slumber, but it also shows the people in the photo clearly marveling at something they may not fully understand, and yet this is the moment they intuitively realize what they are witnessing is close to miraculous. Youthful beauty is transient and impermanent. And as a result, tragic. And this statue of the beautiful Bythnian youth speaks of a longing we have to make it permanent and immortal. I don’t know who the photographer is. But it is absolutely magnificent. I’m not surprised this occurred at Delphi. I was last at Delphi some years ago. It was thought of as the “navel of the earth” in antiquity. And it is a place to this day that still resonates with a sense of the holy, the mysterious and the divine. When walking among the ruins one can’t help but feel as if they are standing at the threshold of a gate to another world. Apollo, and his voice on earth, the Pythia (Oracle), seem as if they are mere steps away, behind some invisible door. Among other things, one realIzes the timelessness of time itself at Delphi. Van alle Hildo Krop beelden op het WG-terrein werd ik door deze twee het meest geraakt: ‘Troost’ en ‘Herinnering’. Op de hekpijlers van het voormalig pathologisch anatomisch laboratorium. In dit gebouw was ook het mortuarium gevestigd. De beelden van Krop waren bedoeld om nabestaanden enige troost te bieden. Het beeld ‘Troost’ uit 1928 leed helaas dusdanig onder de weersomstandigheden dat het ernstig beschadigd raakte. Begin deze eeuw werd het vervangen door een replica. Omdat ‘Troost’ nu veel recenter is vervaardigd dan ‘Herinnering’, zijn de sporen van het gereedschap waarmee het is gemaakt duidelijk te zien: kleine groefjes die de vormen van het beeld volgen. Het oppervlak van ‘Herinnering’ is in de loop der jaren door wind en regen gladgeschuurd, al zie je als je heel goed kijkt op plekken die zich wat meer in de luwte bevinden ook spoortjes op dit veel oudere beeld. Dit is bijvoorbeeld in de kelk van de bloem naast de gebeeldhouwde dame het geval. Vanaf de jaren ‘10 van de vorige eeuw werkte Hildo Krop decennialang als beeldhouwer in Amsterdam. Zijn werk is op meer dan honderd plekken in de stad te zien: op bruggen, als decoratie van gebouwen of als vrij werk. Sommige - zoals de beelden op de Lyceumbrug - kom ik bijna dagelijks tegen, andere heb ik nog nooit gezien of zijn me schandalig genoeg nog nooit echt opgevallen. Tijdens mijn ‘staycation’ (en waarschijnlijk daarna) wil ik alle aan de hand van de uitgave ‘Hildo Krop, stadsbeeldhouwer van Amsterdam’ alle beelden van Krop in mijn stad opzoeken en écht goed bekijken. Ik kwam er overigens pas kort geleden achter dat 2020 Hildo Kropjaar is. Het is dit jaar 50 jaar geleden dat deze productieve kunstenaar overleed. Promises are promises here there is the other pics my friend and I took as somebody working in tourism for 7 years I recoment to go in the afternoon around 12 to 2pm been on this time is perfect for light because quarrymen carved this figures against sunrise also there are some little businesses on the way you can contribute buying some soda water or cookies there are no restaurants over there it would be awesome if they set some the view is amazing seriously. The total hike is going to take you around 45min one way to get there but locals will tell you 20 min the max elevation you reach is 3935 masl and the incline is not hard remember you hike all the time at the side of the dirt road . We brought binoculars and it was a great idea we saw an eagle hunting the negative aspect of human impact is that some of us chase money but dont care the environment so PLEASE if there is trash in there help us to pick it up... Boğazkale is the Turkish name for Hattusa, the most important Hittite site in Turkey. It was a religious, cultural and administrative centre and its cuneiform tablets of clay and bronze have proved an invaluable source of information about the people. Occupied since the 6th millennium BC, it became the capital of the Hatti in about 1600 BC and lasted around 400 years until overcome by the Phrygians. It was called the City of the Temples because of its 70 religious houses, the largest being the 1400BC Great Temple dedicated to the Storm God Teshub. Rivers to the west and east provide natural defensive escarpments, and the 7km city wall on the south side is pierced by the King’s Gate, Sphynx Gate and the dramatic Lion’s Gate. A shrine depicting 12 gods of the Underworld, from 1250-20BC, can be seen in John Henry Haynes: A Photographer and Archaeologist in the Ottoman Empire 1881–1900 Getting There: Boğazkale is 200km from Ankara. In 2015 the Museum of Latin American Art Invited me to create “Long Beach High Five” for Gumbiner Park in the City of Long Beach, CA. I felt compelled to create something influenced by the Aztec monolith Tlaloc which stands at the entrance of the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. The Aztec relic which is the largest ancient monolith in the Americas was found in a remote region in Mexico in the mid-1850s and moved to its current site in a remarkable way at that time. Since the moment I experienced its massive footprint, Tlaloc has served as a reminder of my native heritage and has been a huge part of my development as an artist. This photo series helps visually articulate how my experience of making the public sculpture related to my home culture and interweaves a personal narrative of me as an immigrant contributing to the culture which has nourished me. At the end the video clip helps display how the Long High Five installation explores ways of expanding on ideas of abstraction, color theory pushing and pulling colors on the surface through the use of colored light, and of permanence in public space via the use of Aluminum. The project took 4 years to complete and can be seen 24 hrs a day at the corner of Alamitos and 6th Street. Its surrounded by a Skate Park in Gumbiner Park, St Anthony’s Elementary School, and the Museum of Latin American Art. The idea behind the design was to create a visual trip for the community to see aspects of the city which resonate with what is means to be from Long Beach. In this respect the sculpture highlights colloquial landmarks using both positive and negative space. Using hashtags list what YOU see in the comments. After the Ancestral Pueblo people left the site in the late 13th century, Cliff Palace slowly deteriorated from the effects of water, wind, freeze/thaw cycles, differential fill levels, a variety of animals, spalling of the alcove roof, and the inherent qualities of the prehistoric structures themselves. Over the course of six centuries, Cliff Palace was visually transformed from an imposing assemblage of buildings, courtyards, and subterranean kivas to an array of stone structures rising from tons of rubble and debris. Still remarkably impressive, the effects of time were nevertheless evident. However, with the discovery of Cliff Palace in the late 1800s; and prior to becoming a national park in 1906, this gradual process of decay rapidly accelerated. Casual visitors and exploiters used everything from pick and shovel to dynamite in an effort to recover all types of artifacts from the site. The natural processes of deterioration were now being altered by human activity as well. Americas Shrine of Democracy, Mount Rushmore National Memorial features the 60-foot faces of four great American presidents who represent the birth, growth, development and preservation of this country. Carved into the southeastern face of Mount Rushmore in South Dakota’s Black Hills National Forest are four gigantic sculptures depicting the faces of U.S. Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. The 60-foot high faces were shaped from the granite rock face between 1927 and 1941, and represent one of the world’s largest pieces of sculpture, as well as one of America’s most popular tourist attractions. . . . Over 90% of the mountain was carved using dynamite. The fine details of the faces were achieved, using jackhammers and hand chisels. Operators hung from the top of the mountain in bosun chairs held by steel cables. Despite the dangerous work, in the 14 years it took to carve the mountain, not a single person died. The memorial was officially declared complete on October 31, 1941. . . . The visit of Sioux County and Mt Rushmore was exhilarating to say the least. The Nature Trail across from the Parking Lot takes you to the Borglum View Terrace and Civilian Conservation Corps stairs that lead to the original Historic Viewing Area. The Sculptor’s Studio, which is the artist’s original studio, gives his perspective and vision of the monument to visitors. The Presidential Trail has some of the best views Mt. Of the four white men depicted, two brutally enslaved hundreds of Africans, the third was a champion of eugenics and an aggressive imperialist, the fourth — the “good” one —approved the hanging of 38 Dakota Native American men, the largest government sanctioned mass execution in U.S. history. While Trump and his supporters wail about “thugs” who dare to vandalize concrete structures in city centers, Rushmore was dynamited into land long considered sacred, a desecration on top of a theft. And now, in the midst of a raging pandemic, Trump insists on staging an event at this site for thousands of people, putting local tribal communities at risk in an area with limited access to hospitals.
