As investigations continue into elephant deaths in Botswana, ECF Director and Save the Elephants’ Head of Research, Chris Thouless, says it is wrong to assume the Botswana Government is dragging its feet. The majority of calves in our care are victims of poaching and human-elephant conflicts. In African elephants, both the males and females carry large tusks, so mothers are often the targets of ivory poaching. If orphaned, a calf of less than 3 years old will struggle to survive without their mother’s nutrient rich milk and the protection of her herd. Human-elephant conflict is big problem in Zambia, as humans and elephants compete for resources. Young elephants can become separated from their mothers during conflicts and are sadly not always reunited. Since our inception, we have responded to 51 orphaned elephants in Zambia. He may look like he is posing for a police mugshot, but Imado is a luckier rhino than most. He is in the privileged position of living on a conservancy where everyone, from the management team to the surrounding communities, are working in unison towards the survival of his entire species. @lewa_wildlife is one of the jewels in the crown of Kenyan conservation. And with good reason. This expansive property is home to no less than four luxury lodges... all of which run on a not-for-profit model. This means that all earnings are divided equally between covering the expenses towards the day to day running of the lodges and supplying much needed services to the local communities that surround the conservancy. By welcoming these communities into the inner workings of the conservancy, instead of making them feel marginalized and excluded, Lewa ensures that the villagers become the first line of defense in protecting it’s wildlife. Reteti Elephant Sanctuary touched my soul in more ways than I could have imagined. Brainchild of @katie.rowe and the Namunyak community, the sanctuary has been rescuing orphaned and abandoned elephants since August 2016. Their aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and rewild orphaned elephants found north of the equator. Baby elephants become orphaned (mainly) through poaching, separation and falling down wells created by humans to water their livestock. At Reteti they are looked after by a dedicated keeper who feeds them, excercises, plays,sleeps with them and, most importantly, loves them back to health. To date they have released 6 back to the wild and returned 6 to their herds. 16 are currently in their care. Reteti is the first community owned and run elephant orphanage in Africa. Ground breaking for Kenya, 7 of the 50 strong team are women, breaking stereotypes and opening opportunities for women to be proactive in the conservancy’s conservation efforts. Their mantra.... “Anything a man can do, a women can do better” 💪🏻 Without Reteti, the chances of survival for the baby orphaned elephants is bleak. Human-elephant conflict is well documented but here, on the Namunyak Conservancy, the community are the ones spearheading the protection of these beautiful giants. An inspiration to us all. Calling all wildlife lovers! Please help us in supporting our Wildlife Warriors! The current travel bans have had a devastating impact on the conservation world as most protected areas rely solely on income from tourism to fund conservation and wildlife protection operational costs. Parks have had to make ends meet with zero income from tourism and all financial resources are depleted. Species such as White and Black rhino, Wild Dog, Cheetah and more require continued protection, and funds raised from the Zululand Conservation Trust go directly towards endangered species protection and monitoring at Manyoni Private Game Reserve in South Africa. The project aims to fund equipment, protective clothing, training, death and disability insurance for field rangers on the front line. Field rangers have very high risk and stressful looking after endangered species and we therefore have to look after them. Job security and life Insurance will provide them with piece of mind knowing their families will be looked after. Funding for field rangers will ensure endangered species are protected. The project will fund an entire anti-poaching units operational costs for three months. This will ensure that critical populations of white and black rhino as well as wild dog and cheetah are protected and monitored while there is no income from tourism. Great news out of Tanzania. Elephant numbers have stabilized in a key landscape that was known for rampant poaching just a few years ago. This according to a massive wildlife survey by @TheWCS and Tanzania’s Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI). . An estimated 20,145 elephants were recorded during the 20-day survey, which covered 29,855 square miles of the Katavi-Rukwa and Ruaha-Rungwa landscape and included parks, game reserves, and other protected and conservation areas. . Far fewer elephant carcasses were found compared to 2015 when the last survey took place, indicating that poaching is now being brought under control – though a few were still detected in some areas. As we commemorate World Rhino Day 2020, let us take the time to remember that while adult rhinos have no natural predators in the wild, their size, speed, and strength do not protect them from humans with weapons. Poaching has and remains, the number one cause for these wonderful beasts declining population. Between 1970 and 1992 alone, the black rhino population decreased by 96%, with total numbers dropping to as low as around 2,400. This photo is of a stunning Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis) that I found whilst out in the bush and I have never shared this photo before and heres why.⠀ 🦏⠀ I dont normally post photo of rhinos, especially any that have been taken recently, due to poaching risk. Poachers have been known to use photos posted on social media to look at a variety of factors from horn size to specific features that they could use to help them track down a rhino.⠀ 🦏⠀ Since its #WorldRhinoDay and this photo is over 3 years old Im happy to share it.⠀ 🦏⠀ But If you decide to share a photo of a rhino make sure its at least 1 month old, the GPS settings of your camera are turned off and you havent tagged the exact location of where you took the photo. *NEW ARRIVAL ALERT* Yesterday, the 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗢𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲 received a newborn female calf! She was found abandoned by her mother in the veld for unknown reasons. The team went out to rescue her yesterday afternoon. They could see in the veld that she already had an incredible appetite! Once brought to the 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗢𝗿𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲, she quickly made herself at home in her new warm room. She took her first bottles very well and now is a little milk monster! Early morning update on Jessie from Yolandi The Rhino Orphanage. “Jessie is ok. She was all over the place yesterday though. Very panicky, very anxious. Even If I just moved a little she would jump and frantically call. If me or Zanre left the room, Jessie would freak even though the other person is still there. She had a complete meltdown in the afternoon so dr Pierre said to give her a mild sedative. She has slept well last night, just calls every now and again to check if Im still there. This poor thing has been through a lot hey. Definitely traumatized. Shes drinking vey well at least. But her tummy is still quiet. We are adding extra fibre to her milk and im giving her a warmwater enema later to try soften the fecal balls so they move”. To this I want to add that Jessie’s mom was definitely poached. At least 2 days before we found her. From the wound on her side it would seem the poachers also struck at her but luckily she managed to evade any serious blows. Jessie is now getting the best care possible and will be bottle fed till she can eat solids. This means carers will be with her for the next 3 years after which she will be released back into the wild. Rhinos soon rewild. They disassociate from humans quite quickly, luckily. Care is very costly and the Orphanage does not charge us any fees for raising our orphans. If you are keen to donate please do so direct to the Rhino Orphanage. See the link below. - Today is World Rhino Day! While they are among the most iconic animals in the world, the five extant species of rhino today are all listed on the IUCN Red List. Rhinos face serious threats from poaching, with three of five species considered critically endangered.
Rhino horns cannot cure cancer, cannot make you immortal and can obviously never make you horny! Yet, the demand for Rhino horns in the illegal wildlife trade market persists because of its assumed medicinal benefits which has no proof at all and also because of its high social status. Two of the five remaining species, the Javan Rhino and Sumatran Rhino are critically endangered whereas the Greater One-Horned Rhino, 80% of which thrives in our country, is now a Vulnerable species under the IUCN Red List. Poaching, illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss are three of the biggest threats that the Rhinos face today. One Rhino is killed every 8 hours for its horns! Today, as we celebrate World Rhino Day, we thank all our supporters who have given us the means to keep fighting for our rhinos, on the ground. 2020 has been challenging on all levels and we thank you all for the ongoing support 🙌 The following is an update on poaching survivor, Rita and her calf, Ndinani: 2016 poaching survivor, Rita, was sadly euthanized earlier during 2020 when her condition suddenly deteriorated because of an aggressive leiomyoma tumour, leaving her calf, Ndinani. Ndinani (meaning I am with you in Xhosa as named by veterinarian, Dr. Brendan Tindall) was only 14 months old and still dependent on Ritas care at the time of her death. Dr William Fowlds fitted the tracking collar in the days after Ritas death to ensure that her health and wellbeing could be monitored closely during the months after she was orphaned. The tracking collar was sponsored by Chipembere Rhino Foundation, for intensive monitoring purposes. Ndinani is regularly tracked in field using this tracking collar on her left front foot. She loves swims and mud baths, even during the icy winter months. She is doing remarkably well and has become a strong and confident little rhino all on her own. Josefina es nuestra rinoceronte blanco del sur (Ceratotherium simum simum). Es toda una abuelita con un gran carácter. A sus 51 años de edad ya ha sobrepasado la espectativa de vida de su especie, la cual se encuentra en un rango de 40 a 50 años. Sin embargo, el record mundial lo marcó Sana, una rinoceronte blanco que falleció en 2019, a sus 55 años de edad, en el zoológico Planete Sauvage de Francia. Al igual que Sana, nuestra Josefina recibe constante atención y cuidados, pero hay algo en lo que nadie puede intervenir: ¡su cuerno! Josefina odia el pelo largo, bueno el cuerno, pues el mismo esta conformado por pelos adheridos fuertemente por queratina. Josefina lo lima constantemente dándole una forma cuadrada. Corto y ocasionalmente puntiagudo es su aspecto favorito, en contraste con otros rinocerontes que prefieren un cuerno mucho más largo. Nadie, nunca, interviene en su decisión de que estilo llevar. Nicole is a field guide and she wrote this to the @stroop_film team: “I was taking a few guests out on safari and we spotted the two white rhinos, the mother and her calf. It was around 9am the morning and one could see the mother wanted to rest and the calf wanted to play. The mother paid no mind to the calf and went to lie down, the calf on the other hand would have none of it! First it started to make its high- pitched squealing sound hoping to get mom up to play, but after doing so for a good 20 minutes the calf decided to take action and climb on top of the mother trying to coax her into playing. Sumatran rhinos can only be found in the forests of Indonesia — and separated by mountainous terrain, they now struggle to find mates in the wild. While this species has lived throughout Southeast Asia for millennia, there are only 80 rhinos left today. Given this critical need, the Society has joined forces with #SumatranRhinoRescue to rescue and relocate these animals to managed breeding facilities, as well as establish new sanctuaries in Indonesia. Meet Romeo, an eastern black rhinoceros born at Lincoln Park Zoo last May! His birth was recommended by the Eastern Black Rhinoceros Species Survival Plan. While Romeo receives lots of enrichment from his dedicated keepers and adoration from local fans here in Chicago, Lincoln Park Zoo is committed to conserving other members of this critically endangered species in the wild. Lincoln Park Zoo scientists have assisted the recovery of endangered black rhinos across Africa, which were nearly driven extinct during the 1990s by habitat destruction and poaching. Critically Endangered black rhinos face an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. North Luangwa National Park’s black rhino population was poached to extinction in the 1990s, but rhinos were later reintroduced in the 2000s. This population of black rhinos is currently the only black rhino population in all of Zambia. @frankfurt.zoological.societys partnered with the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife to create the North Luangwa Conservation Program which protects and manages an operational area in North Luangwa National Park. With support from the Rhino Recovery Fund, the North Luangwa Conservation Program will secure this population of black rhinos and will maintain a ‘zero poached’ status through governance assistance, increased intelligence and investigations, and support to the Zambian Department of National Parks and Wildlife. You certainly don’t see that everyday! 😳⠀ ⠀ We witnessed a newly born calf that had been born very recently go and start suckling a nearby female black rhino for milk. The two black rhinos were very remarkably gentle and patient with the calf allowing it to suckle with its nervous mother close by. Goed nieuws op #WorldRhinoDay🦏☀ • Er zijn in 2020 13 nieuwe kalveren geboren op projectlocaties in Zuid-Afrika en in Malawi. • In totaal is het aantal zwarte neushoorns in Afrika gestegen van 2500 in de jaren ’90 tot 5600 anno 2020 (!) Ook met onze nieuwste populatie neushoorns in Malawi (de eerste internationale verhuizing) gaat het goed: ze zijn geacclimatiseerd en geven nu, één jaar later, kalveren! Na 17 jaar werk om de groei en het aantal zwarte neushoorns te verhogen, zien we de resultaten waarop we hadden gehoopt. 6 years ago I had the amazing opportunity to step into a pen with this 400lb baby white rhino named Nyani. She had been rescued from the wild after witnessing poachers brutally cut off her mother’s horn and leave her to die. Nyani was found next to her mother and brought to a rhino orphanage to be cared for and eventually be released back into the wild. She nibbled my tutu and I was so taken with her that I convinced my fellow dancers to adopt her with me. In the spirit of that first foray into rhino conservation, I’ve signed up for my first 5K run. It is a virtual Run for the Wild in conjunction with the Bronx Zoo and the Wildlife Conservation Society. My team is called “RhiNO? RhinYES!” So far my team consists of myself, Pete (my hubby), and little Violet Storm, who will tag along with us via scooter. I’m inviting all of you join me in donating, spreading the word, reposting, or daring to join the team! You don’t have to be in nyc since it is all virtual. Team, this is what Project 033 is really about. Supporting the horses so the babies remain safe. Before leaving Care for Wild, I helped with a feed for Yster & Anchor. Both these rhinos saw their moms be slain by poachers. It took #CFW 8 days of around the clock work to keep Yster (left) alive and to get him outside in the sunshine for the first time.
