The most dramatic way to fight a fire is from the sky. An air tanker may fly about 150 feet off the ground at 161 miles per hour and can paint up to a mile-long line of retardant on the ground. A big helicopter could dump as much as 2,000 gallons of water to try to save a house. And smokejumpers fling themselves from airplanes 3,000 feet above their landing area below to snuff out a small fire in a remote area before it gets bigger. As California battles another wave of historically enormous blazes, the state is using aircraft to combat the huge conflagrations. As of last week, aerial assets in California had dropped 3.35 million gallons of fire retardant and 4.69 million gallons of water to battle fires covering more than 1.25 million acres. California has both its own fleet and can employ contractors to mount full-court presses on fires, but the aerial approach is certainly not limited to combating burns in the Golden State. And the process is more complicated than simply dumping water on flames. Instead, a 600W Halogen bulb was used, plus on-set lighting. The set was so brightly illuminated at night that crewmembers had to wear sunglasses!

At 23:57 hours, Station 83 and first alarm companies were alerted to a reported bedroom fire on Merrybrook Road. The 83 Duty Officer (Engineer 83) arrived to find heavy fire on the B side of a 2 story dwelling, with it already running into the attic and venting through the roof. Quint 53’s crew of 6 arrived to assume first due engine duties and deployed multiple lines while Ladder 83’s crew of 7 split, with half assisting with advancing hoselines and the other half performing first due truck company duties. Crews battled challenge after challenge in fighting this fire, but persisted with an aggressive interior attack in an effort to save as many personal belongings as possible. Due to the area not having hydrants, multiple tankers were requested. Crews then returned at 5:24 hours for a rekindle, and remained on the scene until 08:00 hours. Due to the many challenges faced at this incident, the equivalent of a 3rd alarm was struck for mutual aide companies. Thank you to the following organizations for your help, we apologize if we miss anyone. Its another Monday morning in Wildfire Season 2020, and another horrible blaze has broken out. Throughout Sunday night, the Glass Fire forced evacuations across Napa and Sonoma counties—in Calistoga, Santa Rosa, Glen Ellen, St. Helena and beyond. This picture was taken by 7x7s Wine Country writer, Jess Lander (@willwrite4forwine), from her home (in Deer Park on Howell Mountain) around 4am just before she was forced to leave. Jess tells us that many homes and wineries, especially along the Silverado Trail, are in the line of fire. The Chron reports that Chateau Boswell Winery and Black Rock Inn have burned, and the beloved Meadowood has also been evacuated. 😢 Meanwhile across Mendocino and Humboldt, the August Complex Fire continues to rage on. STRIKE TEAM 1282A returns home Last night our strike team came home after 14 days at the CZU Lightning Fire. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. This years fire season has started very aggressively and resources are already stretched thin. Your Downey Fire Dept. is prepared and honored to serve as part of the states Master Mutual Aid system. Strike Team 1282A was made up of Engine’s from Downey, Santa Fe Springs, West Covina, La Habra Heights and Torrance. I took this picture seven years ago today with a crappy cell phone. It was a brisk morning in the oil sands and the sunrise was absolute perfection. The steam stacks silhouetted the LR1750 that Roll Lift had on site. The crane was there to lift in two huge drums, and we were building the structure around them. The guys who selflessly helped us are now in need of our help. @gatosbros, the brothers who brought their personal fire engine over from their 40-acre farm outside of Morgan Hill to aid #bonnydoon are being strong-armed by Santa Clara County, which aims to seize their property. . The issue goes back to the Loma fire in 2016 when the brothers—with full support and blessing from Cal Fire—cut fire breaks to defend their property. Years later they were red tagged by the county for “illegal grading” and told that if they didn’t “restore” the work they’d done the county would seize their property. Not only would it be extremely costly to “restore,” but it would also be unsafe as the work that was done is imperative to future fire defense, good for the health of the forest itself, and integral to the agricultural use of the land. According to CalFire, this is the first time anyone has been penalized for taking this kind of action during a wildfire. . The bigger issue is that the county is refusing to provide proof that it sent proper notice in regard to these alleged violations and is instead using its size and strength to force them into signing over their property, without giving them the opportunity to even plea their case. . This is a classic case of govt. overreach and an abuse of power. These guys are good Samaritans and good citizens whose entire life work and savings are now in serious jeopardy due to extremely unfair play by the county. . Santa Cruz mountains friends and neighbors, the guys who helped save our homes and ranches are now in need of our help to save their ranch. Please sign the petition linked in my bio. ROWW is responding to the unprecedented wildfires that are scorching the west coast and is currently in Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Supply Distribution. We have partnered with @DirectRelief and @LowesHomeImprovement to distribute hygiene kits, first aid and emergency preparedness kits, wildfire kits, tarps, EZ ups, pet cages, generators, medical supplies, PPE, and more to the thousands of displaced people all across the State of Oregon. As active fires die down and needs shift, ROWW will transition to Phase 2: Response Kits (generators, fuel, tarps, portable heaters, shovels, chainsaw oil, clean up supplies, etc). Harvest2020 continues to be weirder than weird. This morning it was dark as night until about 8 am... when this orange glow appeared. Strangely, air quality is decent. A mass of cold air in the area is pushing the smoke from the fires up to 3-4k feet as opposed to ground level. Räddningstjänsten är larmad till en omfattande byggnadsbrand. Det brinner i en byggnad som innehåller flera olika lagerverksamheter. Räddningstjänsten gör en stor resursuppbyggnad och påbörjar flera parallella åtgärder för att försöka släcka branden samtidigt som så mycket egendom som möjligt ska räddas. I en av lagerlokalerna håller några brandmän på rädda egendom då plötsligt en vägg rasar in. Brandmännen rusar ut och när de samlas igen på utsidan av byggnaden så saknas en brandman. Det ropas NÖDLÄGE på radion! Om ovanstående situation inträffar, vad gör du? Hur förberedd är din organisation på att hantera ett nödläge? Finns nödlägesplaner och är de inövade? Din kollega och vän saknas, och det kommer bli ett trauma för dig, din grupp och organisationen som helhet. Utöver att vara tränad för att hantera den akuta fasen så behöver din organisation också vara förberedd på att ge stöd till egna medarbetare, lång tid efter händelsen. Det bästa är ju såklart att aldrig hamna i ett nödläge, varav kontinuerlig riskbedömning under hela insatsen är väldigt viktig för att fatta beslut om fortsatta åtgärder. Men vid dynamiska händelser inträffar ibland det oförutsedda. Därför är det bra att diskutera och öva nödläge i sina organisationer. Hur gick det i den aktuella händelsen? Tack vare ett snabbt och bestämt agerande gick kollegor till den saknade brandmannen in igen i den brinnande byggnaden för att påbörja ett sök. “If youre going through hell, keep going.”-Winston Churchill I know I am not alone when I say I am feeling low on resilience and high emotional exhaustion. This year has been filled with horrors and hardships that seem never ending. I was driving to Tahoe and had to pass through and under the smoke from the devastating Creek fire that is raging out of control a few hundred miles away. In some places it was like driving through thick brown fog, then it was like I was plunged into the middle of the night even though it was 3pm. But on the horizon I could see the blue sky. It was terrifying to drive through that but I knew if I just kept going I would make it to the other side. I know that we haven’t, I haven’t made it to the other side yet but in that moment I remembered I am strong enough to keep going. Napa Fire Department welcomes home our members who were deployed out of county on Engine 6. The 4 members on E6, along with a strike team leader from Napa Fire, deployed over two weeks ago originally to the Lake Fire in Los Angeles County. After working on the Lake Fire for 4 days, the crew was reassigned emergency need back to their home county and was assigned to the LNU complex here in Napa. E6 spent the remainder of their tour working all over the LNU complex doing structure protection, back burn firing operations, assisting with hose lays, and evacuations and search. All members have safely returned home yesterday and are in good health and are back to work in their regular home stations today. Welcome home team. - @napa_fire on Instagram
