Smoke and ash rising into the atmosphere may be visible over portions of Long Beach and surrounding areas, potentially creating unhealthy conditions. All individuals are urged to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities in any area directly impacted by smoke and ash. This includes areas where residents can see or smell smoke. In any area impacted by smoke, residents should take the following precautions: Avoid any vigorous outdoor or indoor exertion. Remain indoors, especially for individuals with respiratory or heart disease, pregnant women, older adults and children. Keep windows and doors closed or seek alternate shelter. Run your air conditioner if you have one. Change the standard air-conditioner filter to a medium or high efficiency filter. If you have a wall-unit or window-unit air conditioner, set it to “re-circulate.” Avoid the use of a swamp cooler or whole-house fan to prevent bringing additional smoke inside, if possible. This is what happens when the system fails people over and over. This morning when I woke up, I told myself because of Corona Virus I couldnt risk going to the protest, that it wasnt worth it. All day something inside of me was screaming and itching, a little voice that said this cause is bigger than myself, the virus and its so important to go and stand up for what you believe in. As a filmmaker I couldnt help but document my experience today. Lately it feels like the end of the world, like we are stuck in Grand Theft Auto game. As of 8:00 p.m., the Bobcat Fire has burned approximately 33,312 acres and is 6% contained. ⠀ ⠀ Throughout the day, strategic control burning was utilized in the south as the fire remained very active, reaching Chantry Flat in Santa Anita Canyon. Handcrews and dozers are working in the areas around Mt. Wilson and Mt. Harvard as the fire has grown significantly west. In Monrovia, much progress has been made to the point where there may still be flames in the hills, but there is a lot less than what we’ve been seeing in the past 7 days. Firefighters are working in the hills to clean up fires, suppress any remaining flames and watch for flares and startups until the hot areas begin to cool. Please keep in mind that flares may occur as the hills are still smoking and embers could ignite residual fires. If you see a new fire ignite, call 911.⠀ ⠀ As the area is hot and there remains fires in the area, the Evacuation Warning continues to be in effect and residents should remain prepared for evacuations. We are hoping that dedicated crews will continue their work and we’ll soon start to see containment increase along the fire line between the Bobcat Fire and City of Monrovia.⠀ ⠀ As part of this update, we wanted to share with you several photos taken today. While it may hurt to see our beloved Canyon Park in this condition, please know that fire suppression tactics and activities kept our structures undamaged even if the brush around it is burned out. Two weeks ago, our OES engine was requested to be staffed and dispatched to the LNU lightning fires. OES365 was staffed by 4 of your Napa Firefighters and spent 2 weeks “on the line” performing many mentally and physically taxing assignments. All crew members returned home safe and healthy and in good spirits. Welcome home crew! OES stands for “Office of Emergency Services.” When requested by the state “mutual aid system” firefighters will staff the OES engine and can be deployed anywhere in CA to help suppress wild fires. Sometimes there is no warning before the call comes in and the engine crews must deploy from work within 30 minutes and be gone for upwards of 14 days. Our Clayton firefighters and their families need your prayers and support. Six months into the pandemic and COVID-19 finally came knocking at our fire house door. About two weeks ago, a firefighter didn’t feel well and let us know immediately. We had daily been disinfecting the station and equipment, but social distancing isn’t always easy to do when responding to emergencies or living together under one roof. Many don’t realize our firefighters respond to more than just fires, in fact, they respond mostly to medical calls and car accidents, including going into homes and coming into close contact with patients who may have COVID-19. Health officials haven’t been able to help us trace exactly how our first firefighters were infected, but as of this morning, 17 Clayton firefighters have tested positive and three of them are now in the hospital. That’s why we need your thoughts and prayers more than ever. Firefighters are family and they also consider the community their family. We can’t name the employees at this time, but we can tell you their loved ones are worried and hurting. Right now, the families haven’t asked for anything specifically – only to know their community is behind them and holding them up their prayers. The firefighters who remain working are hurting too…they’re covering for their fire brothers and sisters, gladly filling in shifts, and they haven’t missed a single beat in responding to calls. But the normal comradery enjoyed in this high-risk, stress-filled occupation has now turned to isolation. They don’t eat at the table together anymore – they eat alone. Only one bed to a room. They disinfect daily and wear N95 masks. We aren’t saying this to garner sympathy or to bring unwanted attention to our fire families, but simply for the public we serve to know – we’re taking all the necessary precautions to prevent further spread, to stay healthy and to remain ready to respond when you need us most. Our motto: “Providing Prompt Professional Services with Pride! The guys who selflessly helped us are now in need of our help. @gatosbros, the brothers who brought their personal fire engine over from their 40-acre farm outside of Morgan Hill to aid #bonnydoon are being strong-armed by Santa Clara County, which aims to seize their property. . The issue goes back to the Loma fire in 2016 when the brothers—with full support and blessing from Cal Fire—cut fire breaks to defend their property. Years later they were red tagged by the county for “illegal grading” and told that if they didn’t “restore” the work they’d done the county would seize their property. Not only would it be extremely costly to “restore,” but it would also be unsafe as the work that was done is imperative to future fire defense, good for the health of the forest itself, and integral to the agricultural use of the land. According to CalFire, this is the first time anyone has been penalized for taking this kind of action during a wildfire. . The bigger issue is that the county is refusing to provide proof that it sent proper notice in regard to these alleged violations and is instead using its size and strength to force them into signing over their property, without giving them the opportunity to even plea their case. . This is a classic case of govt. overreach and an abuse of power. These guys are good Samaritans and good citizens whose entire life work and savings are now in serious jeopardy due to extremely unfair play by the county. . Well, it’s been a day... Yesterday brought heavy winds of up to 50 mph, bringing with it downed hop vines and smoke and making the farm look like something out of a Mad Max film. Due to safety concerns, field work was shut down for several hours. Thankfully no one was hurt and everyone is safe. Today we assessed all fields and surveyed the damage. No fields blew down, but we saw a fair amount of downed vines. Labor was redistributed to salvage what we can. UPDATE: A dog was rescued but two cats died in a raging fire Saturday night in Garfield that engulfed one home, destroyed another and damaged a third, displacing six families, authorities said. Garfield Police Sgt. Pedro Gongora, Officers Sebastian Tyburski and Noah Murphy and Detective Sgt. Marc Amos arrived shortly after 7:30 p.m. to find a Van Winkle resident feeling his home out the back with his dog, Capt. Richard Uram said. . The first house was soon fully involved. Hoarding conditions made the job tougher for firefighters as the blaze quickly ravaged a neighboring home and spread to the third. Fourteen mutual aid companies responded to assist, Uram said. The Red Cross aided the displaced families, relocating one of them, the captain said. The Bergen County Arson Investigations Unit also was at the scene, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence. . Early this morning, Orange County sent out additional resources for mutual aid assistance up north. A part of this recent deployment, Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue has deployed our Engine 82 as part of Strike Team 1422A with four firefighters to the Lightning Complex Fire in Napa County. Additionally, CMFR’s OES Engine 415 firefighters continue to work the Carmel Fire with four firefighters and are staying in high spirits. Our members have been busy with the start of the 2020 fire season. Engine 25 and Engine 26 were a part of Strike Team 1203A with Burbank and Pasadena. Engine 329 was a part of 1870C with LACo La Verne. 2 Fireline Paramedics (FEMP) and 1 FOBS on Single Resource assignments, Medical Unit Leader with Incident Management Team 2, and 2 members on OES Water Tender 11. The most dramatic way to fight a fire is from the sky. An air tanker may fly about 150 feet off the ground at 161 miles per hour and can paint up to a mile-long line of retardant on the ground. A big helicopter could dump as much as 2,000 gallons of water to try to save a house. And smokejumpers fling themselves from airplanes 3,000 feet above their landing area below to snuff out a small fire in a remote area before it gets bigger. As California battles another wave of historically enormous blazes, the state is using aircraft to combat the huge conflagrations. As of last week, aerial assets in California had dropped 3.35 million gallons of fire retardant and 4.69 million gallons of water to battle fires covering more than 1.25 million acres. California has both its own fleet and can employ contractors to mount full-court presses on fires, but the aerial approach is certainly not limited to combating burns in the Golden State. And the process is more complicated than simply dumping water on flames. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. ROWW is responding to the unprecedented wildfires that are scorching the west coast and is currently in Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Supply Distribution.
