Last week our Sausalito headquarters was drenched in an eerie orange sky 😮 The Mars-like scene was caused by wildlife smoke high in the atmosphere that blocked the sun’s light for much of the day, but luckily our patients and people are safe. ・ ・ Our volunteer photographer, Bill Hunnewell, took this photo midday – notice volunteers had to turn on the lights in each pen as they worked. Well, it’s been a day... Yesterday brought heavy winds of up to 50 mph, bringing with it downed hop vines and smoke and making the farm look like something out of a Mad Max film. Due to safety concerns, field work was shut down for several hours. Thankfully no one was hurt and everyone is safe. Today we assessed all fields and surveyed the damage. No fields blew down, but we saw a fair amount of downed vines. Labor was redistributed to salvage what we can. Just to give you all perspective on what it’s like to drive through the Willamette Valley growing area RIGHT NOW, these videos were taken between 9:15-10am on my way to Portland from @walterscottwines (sunrise was 6:45am). They show the dramatic shift from the shroud of a Satanic smoke cloud to clear blue skies. . As power finally came on yesterday, I was able to get enough charge on my electric car to make it to the next station this morning; unfortunately through the 5th circle of hell that many winemakers are harvesting in currently. . This is just too dystopian for words. As you watch the horizon line in these videos, and the light at the end of the tunnel grows, let that imagery mirror our resolve to do better for this planet. UPDATE: A dog was rescued but two cats died in a raging fire Saturday night in Garfield that engulfed one home, destroyed another and damaged a third, displacing six families, authorities said. Garfield Police Sgt. Pedro Gongora, Officers Sebastian Tyburski and Noah Murphy and Detective Sgt. Marc Amos arrived shortly after 7:30 p.m. to find a Van Winkle resident feeling his home out the back with his dog, Capt. Richard Uram said. . The first house was soon fully involved. Hoarding conditions made the job tougher for firefighters as the blaze quickly ravaged a neighboring home and spread to the third. Fourteen mutual aid companies responded to assist, Uram said. The Red Cross aided the displaced families, relocating one of them, the captain said. The Bergen County Arson Investigations Unit also was at the scene, along with the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence. . Engine 329 was a part of 1870C with LACo La Verne. 2 Fireline Paramedics (FEMP) and 1 FOBS on Single Resource assignments, Medical Unit Leader with Incident Management Team 2, and 2 members on OES Water Tender 11. On 9/13/20 Sequoia National Park closed from the entrance station to the Giant Forest Museum, and yesterday, 9/15/20, it closed completely in response to the Castle Fire within the SQF Complex. Since then, many park employees have been evacuated or are under an evacuation warning in the Three Rivers area. Our SEKI team has been working steadily on fire readiness in the Ash Mountain area to prepare for a mandatory evacuation. This work has included lodging solutions for displaced employees, moving government vehicles and equipment out of the area, moving the museum collection, and much more. Sincere thanks to the firefighters and teams working around the clock to keep us and our communities safe. Kings Canyon National Park from the Highway 180 entrance station is open, but we strongly suggest monitoring air quality and deciding if conditions are too smoky for you to enjoy your visit. This is what happens when the system fails people over and over. This morning when I woke up, I told myself because of Corona Virus I couldnt risk going to the protest, that it wasnt worth it. All day something inside of me was screaming and itching, a little voice that said this cause is bigger than myself, the virus and its so important to go and stand up for what you believe in. As a filmmaker I couldnt help but document my experience today. Lately it feels like the end of the world, like we are stuck in Grand Theft Auto game. Using your voice is one of the greatest gifts we have as an American citizen and life is the greatest gift known to man. George Floyd has none of those things. He will never have another chance to fall in love, to see a sunset, to laugh with his friends and family. His life was ripped from him like so many others and that is why we must protest and use our voice and bodies. To show up in solidarity for our brothers and sisters. The mistreatment towards people of color, especially blacks from society and the police has gone on for way too long. People are tired of hurting and watching their loved ones getting murdered. I dont agree with violence or stealing but what else is there to do? Extreme times call for extreme measures. No police officer has ever been sentenced so quickly and if it takes burning this entire country down to make real change then I support that 100%. STRIKE TEAM 1282A returns home Last night our strike team came home after 14 days at the CZU Lightning Fire. The fire was located in the counties of Santa Cruz and San Mateo and as of yesterday had burned over 86,000 acres. Due to the diligent efforts of over 2000 personnel the fire is 72% contained has stopped its forward progress and was in the mop up stages. This years fire season has started very aggressively and resources are already stretched thin. Your Downey Fire Dept. is prepared and honored to serve as part of the states Master Mutual Aid system. Strike Team 1282A was made up of Engine’s from Downey, Santa Fe Springs, West Covina, La Habra Heights and Torrance. The most dramatic way to fight a fire is from the sky. An air tanker may fly about 150 feet off the ground at 161 miles per hour and can paint up to a mile-long line of retardant on the ground. A big helicopter could dump as much as 2,000 gallons of water to try to save a house. And smokejumpers fling themselves from airplanes 3,000 feet above their landing area below to snuff out a small fire in a remote area before it gets bigger. As California battles another wave of historically enormous blazes, the state is using aircraft to combat the huge conflagrations. As of last week, aerial assets in California had dropped 3.35 million gallons of fire retardant and 4.69 million gallons of water to battle fires covering more than 1.25 million acres. California has both its own fleet and can employ contractors to mount full-court presses on fires, but the aerial approach is certainly not limited to combating burns in the Golden State. And the process is more complicated than simply dumping water on flames. Current situation in San Francisco 💔🤯🔥💨 I woke up this morning and thought I was seeing a magical orange sunrise at dawn but it was actually 8am. It’s now 2pm and the sky is still dark. This is climate change. The second and third largest fires in California history are burning right now while the Gulf of Mexico is seeing its first ever twin hurricanes. This will be our new normal unless we shift. And the reality is that time is not on our side. We need all hands on deck!!!! I beg you to please take a moment today to contemplate how you can be of service to the shift that needs to happen in this world. Contemplate your personal actions, those of your business, family and community. Think about your privileges, your network, your power and influence. How can you use these things to create catalyst for positive change? It’s time we all step in to leadership roles and examine the ways in which we can all be responsible for creating a better world. ROWW is responding to the unprecedented wildfires that are scorching the west coast and is currently in Phase 1: Immediate Emergency Supply Distribution. We have partnered with @DirectRelief and @LowesHomeImprovement to distribute hygiene kits, first aid and emergency preparedness kits, wildfire kits, tarps, EZ ups, pet cages, generators, medical supplies, PPE, and more to the thousands of displaced people all across the State of Oregon. As active fires die down and needs shift, ROWW will transition to Phase 2: Response Kits (generators, fuel, tarps, portable heaters, shovels, chainsaw oil, clean up supplies, etc). We hope to send in teams and potentially heavy equipment to help with physical debris removal and clean up.
