A free one mile trail in South Royalton follows the “Old Turnpike” by farmhouse ruins and an original stone bridge. Over 200 years ago, the main highway in the US ran through here! 🍂 During the pandemic, I lived down the hill and spent a lot of time exploring this ghost village. I’m 1000% convinced these woods are haunted. I always see flashes of movement and hear weird noises. While filming this, I heard someone (or something) say my name. No joke!! If you don’t believe me, check out this wild history: Joseph Smith, founder of Mormonism, was born in this forest. His grandparents settled here in 1804 and built the farmhouse shown. Many members of his family had visions and received messages from beyond… which made it easy for them to accept Joseph’s claims about a divine intervention. This forest has fascinating history! Here are a few tips to plan your visit: ⭐️ This mile loop is a moderate walk. The terrain is in good shape, but the ghost village is down a big hill. It’s a short but steep loop! ⭐️ This trail can be accessed by the Joseph Smith Birthplace Memorial. Park at the visitors center, walk past the monument, and follow the old carriage road. When the visitors center is open, golf cart rides are sometimes available. ⭐️ Pets aren’t allowed on the trails. Help preserve this historic site by respecting this rule! ⭐️ Be mindful that this is a rural area with no cell service. Wild animals live here, so stay alert. Always bring food and water on backroad adventures! Even though spooky “season” is ending soon, this trail is amazing to explore all year. I’ve snowshoed here many times and love seeing the annual lights display. I’m grateful to live in a state where ghost towns and playful spirits are hiding in our backyards. The Province of #NovaScotia recently announced that masks will become mandatory in most indoor public places starting today, July 31st. This means masks will be required when dining in our restaurant (except of course, when people are eating or drinking) and while shopping in our Company Store. Just this week, we learned that the @ladwpofficial Sun Valley plant has been leaking methane into our community. The City of Los Angeles and the DWP need to fix this leak immediately and reveal why this was allowed to continue for so long. Though campuses are closed to students, we have done safety checks at @vocesmagnet, Fernangeles ES, Pacoima MS, Byrd MS, @phsparrots , and Vena ES and fortunately found no detectable levels of methane gas.
