We made a huge step forward. There was a massive amount of citizen comments on this ordinance, and we thank everyone who submitted comments. Sadly, the commission still sided with Ocean Rescue Chief Bruce Wilkie’s restrictions. The victories: Our new ordinance allows us more area to enjoy the ocean, and it is so much less complicated than the pilot program originally designed by Chief Bruce Wilkie. The surfing area has increased from 800 yards to almost 1.5 miles. The paddling area has increased from 250 yards to 3 miles. We can also paddle anywhere before 10 AM. We can paddle anywhere after 5 PM. Fishing hours also now make more sense. Paddling/surfing families used to be banned from 89% of the beach, and we have fought hard to change this. Thank you, city of Hollywood, for revising our very restrictive beach rules, and thank you so much to the many residents who submitted public comments. It was clear that the citizens of Hollywood supported Surfrider’s suggestions. Do you still remember you first legit wave ride? 🏄🌊 This is JMs first wave ride. JM is from a Tagbanua tribe who lives in Napsan (more than an hour away south west of Puerto Princesa). He is one of the 4 kids I taught surfing while traveling with our camper van. 🚚. . The night before this, 3 Tagbanua kids followed our weird looking van when we turned left and camped out by the beach. After some talks, I told them I can teach them surfing if they go back the next day.. . They were back with JM. 🙌 So I told them, I would only teach them if they help me do a quick beach clean-up. Without a choice (haha 😋) they pick up some plastics at the beach and I taught them basic surfing. Perfect tiny waves for kids who saw surfboards for the first time. . I work as a general pediatrician in Northern VA. 🌺 I grew up in Malawi, then went to college at Harvard, went to medical school at Vanderbilt, and completed my pediatric residency at Georgetown. 🌺 Having children completely changed my approach to pediatric medicine. Cuba is starving and we need you to listen - 𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗔𝗦𝗘 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗥𝗘: If their voices aren’t heard, Cubans will starve. This post is me risking my ability to enter the country, but we need people to hear us. EDIT: Link in bio to a non-profit based in the US that helps people on the ground in Cuba. Seniors are the most vulnerable right now, as they cannot afford the rising food prices, neither can they convert their money and wait in 8 hour lines. For senior citizens this means death. Some stores are only accepting USD now— something a majority of Cubans do not have and cannot afford to. It has been reported that those who are finding ways to convert CUC to USD are being charged 1.50 CUC for 1 USD (not been confirmed yet, only those within Cuba have brought this up). Cubans struggle to fight back against the government as fines exceed more than they make in a month, and for some, a year. Independent journalists who publish information considered critical of the government are routinely subject to harassment, violence, smear campaigns, travel restrictions, raids on their homes and offices, confiscation of their working materials, and arbitrary arrests. The Cuban government still refuses to recognize human rights monitoring as a legitimate activity and denies legal status to local human rights groups. Effective today, the City of Huntington Beach will be reopening our beaches and beach bike pathway for active recreation only. The decision to reopen the beaches in Surf City was made after extensive discussions with other local area cities and State representatives, including those at the California Natural Resources Agency and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Of note, the State beaches (Huntington State Beach and Bolsa Chica State Beach) will also be reopening today with active recreation protocols consistent with those being implemented by the City. Under the new active recreation regulations, the following protocols will be enforced at local beaches: - Beaches will be open every day from 5 a.m. – 10 p.m. - Only active recreation activities will allowed at the beaches -Physical social distancing requirements are required -Beaches (excluding those in Huntington Harbor) and beach pathways will be open -Walking, running, hiking, bicycle riding, etc. (where normally allowed) will be facilitated -Ocean will be open to swimming, surfing, bodysurfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing, paddle boarding, skim boarding, kayaking, and other similar ocean activities. -Fishing will be allowed from the beach and other ocean access locations, in those places where fishing activities are normally allowed, so long as social distancing requirements are abided by. -Within Huntington Harbor and all connected channels, active recreation such as kayaking, boating, and paddle boarding will be allowed. Under the new active recreation rules, beaches and the ocean will be closed to passive games, loitering, sunbathing, and any gatherings of people (even if engaged in active recreation) outside of those within their immediate household. Nurdles!! Fun to say, NOT fun to have, anywhere, at all, on the planet 😩🌎 Who knew!? Well now we do. ⠀ So what’s the BIG DEAL about these tiny plastic pellets? Nurdles are raw polyethylene beads that are used to manufacture bigger plastic products. Think toothbrushes and takeout containers to pvc pipes and packaging. ⠀ They’re microplastics, each just the size of a lentil, yet one of the largest contributors to plastic pollution around the world. ⠀ They’re also toxic magnets!! 🧲🦠 They attract & absorb chemicals and bacteria, which makes its way into water, onto beaches, and into bellies of marine wildlife— or what we like to call “our food”, if the animals don’t die of poisoning or starvation from them first. ⠀ 1 lb of nurdles contains approx. 25,000 pellets! September 8th 2020, marks the 86th anniversary of the S.S Morro Castle disaster. The ship beached itself on the shores of Asbury Park. This vessel was coming from Havana, Cuba to New York.
