In the 1960s the British botanist Alan Durrant discovered that when flax plants were grown with different kinds of fertilizer, not only did the plants grow differently, but these differences were inherited by their offspring, even when they were all grown under the same conditions. Some lines were larger than normal, others were smaller, and there were also inherited differences in the hairiness of the seeds. These differences persisted over many generations. Such cases, although well documented, were generally ignored. However, the taboo began to lift at the turn of the millennium with the widespread recognition of epigenetics. In a groundbreaking study with mice, Randy Jirtle and Robert Waterford, at Duke University, found that mice of the agouti strain, which are fat, yellow, and disease-prone, could be transformed by changing the diets of mothers, starting just before conception. After the mothers had been given a food supplement derived from soybeans, many of their offspring were slender, brown, and long-lived. Yet there had been no change in their DNA sequence; instead, the expression of the agouti gene had been modified epigenetically. It is now known that such changes can be passed on to subsequent generations. Epigenetic changes are not always erased when sperm and egg cells are formed, as biologists assumed for decades. Jellyfish Lake is a marine lake located on Eil Malk island in Palau. Eil Malk is part of the Rock Islands, a small group of uninhabited islands in Palaus Southern Lagoon, between Kokor and Peleliu. I’m in therapy for the first time in my life and I’m trying to do some work on myself. This trip has not only been total relaxation, but also a reminder of life before COVID. To get up and not worry about a mask or being within 6ft of another human has not only been refreshing but also an adjustment from the past 6 months. Every tourist is tested for COVID once you arrive to the island and you go into one day quarantine until your results come back negative. Once you get the result, you are free to explore the island and surrounding waters which I must say is the most beautiful place I have experienced. The last thing that has been on my mind is COVID and I must say, its been quite refreshing. ‘The Immigrant’ “Never hesitate to go far away, beyond all seas, all frontiers, all countries, all beliefs.” Amin Maalouf. Near the port of Beirut, one can see the prominent bronze statue of a Lebanese immigrant, acknowledging the Lebanese diaspora who left their homeland. The back of the statue faces the city and the figure looks towards Mexico in reference to the thousands who left for the distant country over the last century. Mexico City itself has its own version of Lebanese immigrants. Lebanese-Mexican artist Ramis Barquet designed the statue in 1979 to commemorate the first Lebanese immigrant from the mid-1800s. Lebanese photographer and artist, Maher Attar, turns discarded masks and gloves on the streets of Beirut into visual art. The tapestry is made of iconic portraits and landscapes tiled with hundreds of images of the disposed protective gear. The mosaic is a pop art that tries to raise awareness and respect for the environment. The tiled images are used as building blocks for the final superimposed images. The result is a magnificent series of mosaics of masks and gloves based on photos taken by the artist such as portraits and landscapes. The Beirut-based artist uses his photography as an instrument of environmental awareness. His surreal portraits serve the same purpose. A little bit of insight into our life after having to cancel Happy Daze... My family and I moved to the festival site over Christmas. We had planned to start building a modest cottage for us to live in. This unfortunately has been put on hold while we save to put on Mushroom Valley and continue this amazing dream we have created over the past 8 years. We have a great space to live in which is usually the crew area, we have full solar system, big screen tv, fridge, and are living quite the outdoor comfort life in 2 buses.. We are optimistic for the ride over theses next few months. This little experiment in the Californian desert in March 2020 was an exploration of Augmented Intelligence Reality (AIR), combining AI graffiti painting with Augmented Reality (AR) wickedness by @jnsjohansson. The painting could be viewed as a 3-dimensional landscape on a phone using a custom Instagram filter. I especially liked the idea that any painting can easily become a sculpture this way and that movement and distortion can induce another feel to the flat 2d image.
