When I was eight years old, I suffered a severe head injury. Learning to walk and speak in full sentences again took almost no time at all (or at least my memories were of it, snapping back within a few weeks). The most notable change was how that injury affected my brains addiction center. There are not only the standard addiction candidates (alcohol, controlled substances), but others that youd never believe - think anything that produces serotonin, promotes deep relaxation or makes you sleep like the dead. Before I ever experienced any of this in a deeply meaningful way, my relationship with food was suddenly different. Art became the driving influence in my life, even though I wasnt good at it. And the emotions...ugh. The sweet and painful ways you love people who can not possibly love you back that much – Ive probably written books on this already. Would only need to aggregate my journal entries over the years & hit Publish. My point here is, its not just drugs & booze that can ruin an addicts life. One thing that I (thought I) successfully overcame is dogging me throughout quarantine. Today has been the worst day in decades. That seductive little voice inside my head keeps saying, You beat it once - Itll be fine. You dont have to be enslaved by it; just enjoy it once or twice until you feel better inside, then walk away. Any addict, former or otherwise, can tell you this is NEVER how it plays out. It doesnt matter what else youve overcome or accomplished in your life, no matter how desperately you believe you could pull it off, itll hurt you again. And again. And again. My IG friends from all over the world let me feel how lucky I am to still be alive & enjoying your friendships. And you guys do this for me every single day. If youre fighting something like this privately & feel like unloading, my DMs are always open. Im going to keep very busy for the next few hours & then I wont be alone again til Monday. But I wanted to put this out there in case youre are in bad way today. You arent alone. And it doesnt make you a weak or hopeless human being. - @amari.wolfe on Instagram

What to do if the baby comes super quick In the UK we call this a BBA (born before arrival to hospital or the midwife to a homebirth) Youll be pleased to know that babies tend not to make a sudden appearance unplanned at home, in cars or out at the shops but it does happen occasionally. Most first babies will not arrive sudenly without warning but if you have had a previous precipitous birth (quick birth) there is a higher chance of a BBA. . So what to do if the baby makes a sudden appearance? Firstly keep calm. The majority of babies that make unexpected fast appearances are absolutely fine because the birth process has not been interfered with. As long as you are over 37 weeks and had a problem free pregnancy, the chance of having issues is low. If you start involuntarily pushing, lower yourself down closer to the floor and put a towel or something soft between your legs. Try not to hold yourself back from pushing, just go with what your body tells you to do. The babys head should be left, neither you or your partner need to pull on it. . Once the head is out, the body will come out much easier, usually on the next contraction. If you find its taking longer, roll onto all fours. When baby is out, lift baby to your chest and keep baby held close to you. If someone is with you, get them to grab a towel to dry the baby and another one to cover them but remain skin to skin to help regulate the babys body temperature. Most babies are slightly blue when born but soon start to pinken and will usually cry and start to regulate breathing within a minute or so of birth. Dont worry about sucking out mucous and dont do any vigorous rubbing/slapping/shaking. . Dont touch the cord. Call your midwife if you have planned a homebirth or an ambulance if you havent. They will take care of cutting the cord when they arrive. You may find after 10 mins or so if you are still alone the placenta may start to come. You will feel some more contractions and will find that it slithers out whilst youre holding your baby. Have your hospital bag ready a few weeks before your due date so that if this should happen, you can grab it on your way - @midwifemarley on Instagram

СЕВЕРНЫЙ КАВКАЗ... Навсегда останется в моём сердце❤️ Ловите историю о том, как мы собрались в спонтанный отпуск и провели его. Идея поехать на Кавказ пришла внезапно, но было одно но! Хотелось в такой тур поехать без детей, да и обстановочка в семье, после стольких месяцев совместного пребывания немного накалилась. И тут, о чудо-нам предлагают путёвки в лагерь. Это был реально знак☝🏻 Не задумываясь покупаем детям путёвки и билеты на самолёт, находим гида, который предлагает нам программу отдыха. Всё вроде бы отлично, но нас смутила сначала цена (изначально она была заявлена почти в два раза меньше, но видимо чем ближе к дате прилёта, тем стало дороже😂). Да и пребывание в горах в палатках, как нам предложили тоже на любителя. И мы решили накануне вылета всё полностью поменять. В итоге заказали один отель в Пятигорске на всё время нашего пребывания. И внесли предоплату за экскурсии, которые так же выбирали будучи ещё в СПб. Прилетев в Минеральные Воды взяли такси до Отеля. Рекомендую пользоваться Яндекс такси, так будет на порядок дешевле, чем предлагают частники. Таксист привёз нас в отель, но оказалась, что не в тот😂 их сеть. Мы жили в отеле Маск. Нам понравилась территория и вкусный завтрак под скрипку😁 На следующий день за нами приехал водитель и мы отправились в горы. Первым к посещению у нас был Водопад и Урочище Джилы Су. Красивые места, но это была суббота, поэтому туристов оказалось ооочень много. По дороге водитель останавливал нас в красивых местах для фото. Вид на Эльбрус там просто завораживает. Он кажется так близко. Заехали в местное придорожное кафе, перекусили, попробовали домашнее вино, опять же полюбовались видами и поняли как же нам хорошо😁 На следующий день мы выспались (я как всегда вставала в 5.40-6.00, не умею дольше спать🙈😁) и поехали в Пятигорск. Прогулялись по центру и поднялись по канатной дороге на гору Машук, где проводили закат. Очень красивое видовое место. ✅ Рекомендую к посещению. Посмотрели на город с высоты. Следующий день был самым запоминающимся, его я не забуду никогда. My sweet friend, Katie, sent me this photo as she‘s in the process of moving. We met when we were fourteen, went to high school together, and she was one of the first people outside of my family who knew I wanted to be a writer. This is the very first book I ever finished writing—over ten years ago. She had printed out several versions of THE MAPMAKER OF MERIVALE, and kept the pages for over a decade. (It must be noted that in those eleven-ish years, she moved to a new state, changed apartments three times, and is now taking the pages with her to New York. Like. I don’t have words. And I’m supposed to because I’m a writer. But seriously no words for this brand of affection and loyalty and support). I haven’t read this story in a decade, but I remember the highlights: a YA fantasy set in Spain, with dragons, and an island not found on any map. Guys, I’m probably never going to rework or revisit this story, but it taught me so much. I learned how to tell a story. (A really awful story, but still). And yet this book is, essentially, dead to me. Or so I thought...? Because eleven-ish years later, I wrote and sold a book inspired by medieval Spain and about dragons. 😮 It’s funny how ideas and inspiration stay with us, how they transform when given enough time to marinate. If you’re lamenting a book that you’ve tucked away, never to be seen again, don’t worry. Parts of that story might follow you into another world, another book, and the original idea might be better for it. (Or your friend might text you a photo of a manuscript when you’re *eleven* years older and remind you that you’ve always wanted to write a story inspired by medieval Spain with dragons.) Sometimes ideas take time. They usually do for me, but I think I realized how important it is to draw inspiration from the things you love. Things that interest you. Those elements that first sparked your imagination. I think it’s wise to be aware of the market, and plan accordingly, but I’m wary of chasing trends.
