Unserem Aufruf „Das Schlachten beenden - bei Tönnies und überall!“ folgten am Samstag etwa 100 Menschen zur Demo nach Weißenfels. Bei der Auftaktkundgebung am Markt kritisierten wir in diversen Redebeiträgen die ausbeuterischen Arbeitsverhältnissen in den Betrieben, den katastrophalen Einfluss der Tierindustrie auf Umwelt und Klima und das unermessliche Leid der nichtmenschlichen Tiere die, nach einem elendigen und kurzen Leben für Profit und Genuss ermordet werden. Anschließend setzte sich die Demo lautstark mit Sambatrommeln und Sprechchören über die Hauptstraße in Richtung Schlachthaus in Bewegung. Angekommen forderten wir bei einer Abschlusskundgebung die sofortige und endgültige Stilllegung aller Schlachthäuser, Mastanlagen und Zuchtbetriebe. Und die Umwandlung der gesamten Landwirtschaft hin zu einer bio-veganen, solidarisch organisierten Lebensmittelproduktion. Vielen Dank an alle die da waren! The world population is living, working, vacationing, increasingly conglomerating along the coasts, and standing on the front row of the greatest, most unprecedented, plastic waste tide ever faced. Washed out on our coasts in obvious and clearly visible form, the plastic pollution spectacle blatantly unveiling on our beaches is only the prelude of the greater story that unfolded further away in the world’s oceans, yet mostly originating from where we stand: the land. For more than 50 years, global production and consumption of plastics have continued to rise. An estimated 299 million tons of plastics were produced in 2013, representing a 4 percent increase over 2012, and confirming and upward trend over the past years.(See: Worldwatch Institute – January 2015). In 2008, our global plastic consumption worldwide has been estimated at 260 million tons, and, according to a 2012 report by Global Industry Analysts, plastic consumption is to reach 297.5 million tons by the end of 2015. Plastic is versatile, lightweight, flexible, moisture resistant, strong, and relatively inexpensive. Those are the attractive qualities that lead us, around the world, to such a voracious appetite and over-consumption of plastic goods. However, durable and very slow to degrade, plastic materials that are used in the production of so many products all, ultimately, become waste with staying power. On the other hand, single use plastics (PET, PVC, PS and PLA) have a higher density than seawater causing them to sink. Over time, algae and marine life attach to the floating plastics, causing them to sink into the depths of the ocean. I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do. Today we are partnering with the Sisters in the Benue State Daudu IDP camp in Nigeria to provide food, sanitization and hygiene products, and trainings on COVID prevention practices. This IDP camp that the Sisters chose to support was 2-4 hours away from them, but they recognized the importance of serving this community given their remote location. Aside from providing food relief (rice, beans, tomatoes, seasonings) and hygiene products (liquid and laundry soap, face masks and hand sanitizers), the team of Sisters also conducted COVID prevention/awareness sessions in the camp leaning on printed In Our Hands posters in English and Hausa, to guide the session and conversations. “The Sisters were happy to receive financial support to serve the remote IDP communities. Indias National Action Plan on Climate Change was announced in a hurried manner a month before the G8 summit was to be held in July 2008 as a political move to secure international standing than anything else. The rushed manner in which NAPCC was formulated ensured that the document merely provided broad objectives and did not address strategy. Following the hurried announcement of NAPCC in 2008, the ministries concerned took six more years to approve the missions. States were also supposed to formulate State Specific Action Plans (SSAPs) to mitigate and adapt to the impacts of climate change, but no state had prepared an SSAP until late 2017. Even then, most SSAPs framed are vague. Thanks local legends who joined us for a @worldcleanupday2020 speed clean on Manly Beach yesterday. 👏👏 Most notable litter offenders in the haul were COVID coffee cups and lids😡😤, the usual suspects ciggie filters🤢, and food packaging.🙄 Thank you @benandjerrys for providing ice creams for our litter warriors! This week, “Drowning in Plastic” opened at Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. Photos by James Whitlow Delano @jameswhitlowdelano Children light a toxic fire in the Parolas slum in Tondo. Across the Pasig River is another sprawling slum, Baseco slum. In fact, according to The Straits Times Philippines correspondent, Raul Dancel, one in four of Metro Manilas 12 million residents lives in a slum. Their living environment is contaminated with sewage from when the tide is high, and plastic that comes to rest along the waterfront. Tondo, Manila, Philippines. Not only is plastic creating massive problems to the marine ecosystem where zooplankton, the foundation of the marine ecosystem, mistake micro plastic for food – weakening them by filling their stomachs with toxics not food - but this could lead to a collapse of marine ecosystems upon which all sea life, including humans, depend. The primary component in plastic is petroleum. Perversely, petroleum fuels are also used to in the production of plastic, releasing greenhouse gases and warming the atmosphere. There needs to be a paradigm shift need for humanity to deal with the manifold environmental problems related to this most-versatile of materials. As dramatic as floating plastic is, Erik van Sebille, at Utrecht University in the Netherlands found in 2015 that 95% - 99% of all plastic in the ocean is not on the surface anymore. I first heard about South Georgia Island while working on a story as a photo editor at National Geographic Traveler magazine. Ever since this elusive Antarctic isle known for its abundant wildlife has been on my travel list. A few weeks ago I finally set foot in Saint Andrews Bay, home to over 200,000 pairs of king penguins. There are no photos or documentaries that can effectively convey the feeling of being surrounded by so much wildlife in person. I was absolutely humbled by the wonder of nature and it brought me to unexpected tears. We are thrilled to introduce the inaugural cohort for Global Citizen Academy: a first-of-its-kind leadership experience for high school grads to find their purpose, their people, and their power to make an impact. Coming from diverse backgrounds and 50 countries, these hopeful young leaders are determined to build a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world. We are also excited to announce that we have lined up over 28 speakers including @melindafrenchgates, @iamderay, @varshiniprakash, @jayshetty, @sherylsandberg, and @sethgodin. Este lugar, ubicado en Tierra del Fuego, es uno de los humedales más importantes para las aves playeras en el hemisferio sur 🌎, albergando distintas especies migratorias ✈️ y residentes 🏠. Cuenta con categorías como el ser un Sitio de Importancia Hemisférica de la Red Hemisférica de Reservas para Aves Playeras, Sitio Ramsar y, de forma reciente, Santuario de la Naturaleza🌿. Una de sus principales características es ser el área de invernada más importante en Sudamérica para la subespecie rufa del playero ártico (Calidris canutus rufa), concentrando casi el 50% de su población durante el verano austral🐦. We are going through a period of drought, but the trees we planted with PUR Projet have helped to protect our land and soil erosion has slowly stopped. The trees planted shield my coffee from the sun, but also from hail, and the falling leaves prevent my soil from eroding while nourishing it. We plant native trees within coffee crops to prevent soil erosion, as well as allowing better water retention and providing essential shade for the growth of the coffee cherries. . The new camp or so far called here the military camp. Tall barbed wire fences, tents set up to the nearest millimeter, people crammed into it and food, water, electricity rationed... There are about 9.000 people registered in that new camp set up in the area of Kara Tepe on a military firing range. That place has been build so fast that some tents are still empty because of the lack of isolation and accommodation, obliging a lot of people to pile up in the same space. The pitch and the tents werent isolated, let alone when winter was coming. At this end of September the wind picks up and residents are on the front line facing the sea, creating dust storms and a wind infiltrating each entrance. Making the living (survival) conditions extreme, once again. From testimony of residents, they are three points where to get the food and drinkable water everyday, depending of their area. As this system is not yet well framed, many people have been allowed to go to the nearest supermarket. They bought food in large numbers, a symbol of freedom of choice.. The governments comments are not clear and we are awaiting clarifications. It has been announced that all refugees will be relocated off the island by April but the land has been leased for five years by the Immigration Ministry. The Prime Minister has meanwhile indicated the creation of a permanent structure on the island, is it this camp? Finally, the asylum services announced that more than a hundred people had been employed to enable asylum decisions to be given within few days.
