Yesterday, we hosted 70 woman at @sidewalktoronto for an unbelievable educational and impactful event on the future of work and it’s impact on women. Genevieve Bonin of @mckinseyco started the day off with a summary of her findings in ‘The Present and Future of Women at Work in Canada’. @chandy_inc then took the stage with Colleen Motörhead of @osler_law, Marianne Bulger of Prospect, and Hannah Zhang of @mckinseyco to discuss how to market our transferrable skills and change how we as women communicate our unique value in a professional context. @karlynpercil moderated a panel including Inmar Givoni of Uber ATV, @shalirafi of BMO, and Anahita Jami, bringing @whorunthestemworld to life. We closed out the day with @ashlee_froese of @froese_law moderating a panel of women who successfully transitioned their side hustles into their main hustles including @irene_kf of @laclosette, AnnaMaria Di Nicolantonio of @oliviarosetm, @jessica.jewellery and @katiecrewe. Attendees celebrated what they learned at an amazing cocktail event with food provided by @gusto54catering at @cambriasurfaces where @theginsburgwomen showcased the women-only co-working space we can expect to launch in 2020 and the Rotman Women in Business Initiative educated us about their leadership programs for female professionals. How to avoid getting burnt out 🔥 Warning signs that you’re headed for burn out: 1. dreading going to work 2. Sudden lack of motivation 3. having thoughts that your work doesn’t matter 4. low energy or trouble sleeping 5. disinterest in normal hobbies or passions What kind of burnout is it? Association for Psychological Science says that there are three unique types: 1. Overload: a result of relentlessly overworking oneself to reach goals 2. Neglect: A coping mechanism of giving when facing challenges Identify the root cause Treat the disease, not the symptoms. Reflect on recent events and try to recall when these feelings first began. Make downtime a routine Our brains aren’t designed for constant stimulation, yours is probably tired. Dedicate some time everyday where you can be distraction free and clear your mind Dedicate time to others If you’re feeling like your work has no meaning, take a bit of time to help out a coworker. Helping others will make you feel like you’re providing value, even if it’s a small favor. Making another person happy will make you feel good, and will help you rediscover the meaning of your work. Balance Motivation I had a really hard time with this when I first started working. I’d have really good days, where I was feeling motivated and excited to work, and then would follow it with a handful of really unproductive days. To avoid this, I recommend stopping yourself from working even when you want to keep going, save that motivation to get a good start tomorrow. Stop beating yourself up Don’t feel like working? Can’t focus? So what? Let yourself have the day. You’re never going to perform at 120% day in and day out. If today feels like sh*t, give into it. One day of unproductive ness isn’t going to bring your entire world crashing down. Take a sick day, get a change of scenery, let your mind rest, and don’t beat yourself up for being human. As the system is set up right now, cops are being asked to juggle too many tasks. We are asking cops to be mental health professionals, traffic safety enforcers, experts when it comes to sexual assaults, interpersonal communication specialists, experts when it comes to solving our homelessness crisis, experts in de-escalation… the list goes on and on. So what does Defunding the Police actually mean? It means a thoughtful reallocation of police funds to improve our social systems. This would make way for things like the decriminalization of mental health issues (people are treated/healed as opposed to being put in jail), professional de-escalation specialists, social systems (like affordable housing, counseling, healthcare) that would make for a safer and healthier community. WHY ISN’T THE GOAL TO PREVENT CRIME BEFORE IT HAPPENS BY ELIMINATING THE ISSUES THAT TYPICALLY LEAD TO CRIMINAL ACTIVITY? WHY IS OUR GOAL TO CONTROL CRIMINALS AND FILL QUOTAS? The connection between an offense-based police system and police brutality is undeniable. As white Americans, we have been tuning out the voice of the BIPOC communities who have been saying this for years. We have decided to care now that we see police brutality in our own families. We need to recognize that we are joining the movement late and fight even harder for the benefit of out country while realizing that we have also enabled the problem. We are not experts in this. LADAKH 🌎TIMES CEC Kargil lays foundation stone of Kargil Girls’ Hostel at Sidhra,Jammu KARGIL OCTOBER 01, 2020 editorladakhtimes@gmail.com Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmad Khan today laid the foundation stone of Kargil Girls’ Hostel at Sidhra Jammu. The project approved under the District Plan at a cost of Rs 10 crores is targeted to be completed by ending June 2021 and will provide accommodation facilities to more than 170 girls’ students. The hostel spread over an area of 5 canals will have besides accommodation facilities like reading room, dining hall, canteen, badminton court and other required facilities. Speaking on the occasion the CEC said that with the establishment of the hostel in Jammu, the accommodation facilities to girl students of the district studying in Jammu will be addressed to some extent. CEC Khan said that the LAHDC Kargil is committed to provide satisfactory residential facilities to Kargili students and travellers in the cities of Srinagar, Jammu and Delhi and concrete measures are being taken to achieve this goal. He said that the repairing and renovation works of Boys Hostel Kargil is presently underway in full swing while ambulance has also been sanctioned for the hostel which is being procured soon. While stressing students to be serious and conscious towards their studies, CEC Khan exhorted upon them to strive for enhancing their capabilities in line with the needs of the present competitive world. Khan also made particular mention of the 3 KAS qualifiers from the district who have cracked the prestigious exams recently and advised students to follow their footsteps to achieve success in life. Meanwhile, representative of Students’ Union Jammu Shahida Akhtar on behalf of the girl students studying in Jammu expressed gratitude to the CEC kargil for having sanctioned the construction of the hostel in Jammu as committed by him during the Annual Function of the students union during the winter season. This morning I watched a press conference from a canning redemption center called @surewecannyc in Brooklyn, which got an eviction notice just before the pandemic. This is one of the places where bottle + can collectors trade their loads for the refundable deposits, except this one is a nonprofit that also serves as a community center. . Sure We Can is at risk of losing its 14,000 sqft lot — which takes 11 million bottles and cans out of the wastestream and put $700,000 back into the community, according to a founder — if they can’t secure a $2.3 million nonprofit capital funds grant from the city council before the budget is settled at the end of this week. ($1 million of that would come from the Brooklyn Borough president’s budget, already pledged by Eric Adams.) This is a tough year for budget requests of any form, and the organization is asking supporters to press their city council members in support. . There are other places that take cans. But only SureWeCan has a mission to remove the stigma in working as a collector. “I have noticed over the years that we are treated as subhuman, and that’s exactly the opposite of who and what we are,” said Pierre Simmons, a Brooklyn canner who presented this morning: “We’re independent workers.” He spoke alongside a state senator, a congressman, a boro prez + a former governor of Chicago. It’s a joke, it’s a further demonization of people who are already down.” . Last year I wrote a story for NYT about how street vendors were also fighting the city for dignity in their profession, yet another flexible, low-barrier-to-entry business available to the most vulnerable people in society. One woman told me that as long as she could vend, she knew she could put money in her pocket. She didn’t have to wait for somebody to hire her, a black woman, an immigrant from Africa with an accent. Lin Wood, an attorney for 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse, threatened to sue former Vice President Joe Biden on Wednesday on behalf of his client for defamation after Biden tweeted a video that identified Rittenhouse as a white supremacist. There is no evidence that Rittenhouse is a white supremacist. He currently faces murder charges in Kenosha, Wisconsin, for shooting three rioters last month, two of whom died. Rittenhouse has argued, citing video, that he acted in self-defense. Biden’s video played audio from Tuesday night’s first presidential debate — in which, ironically, President Donald Trump said that he would denounce white supremacists — and claimed in the accompanying text that Trump had refused to do so. At one point, the video showed a photo of Rittenhouse in Kenosha, Wisconsin armed with an AR-15 during ongoing riots. Today is the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW). Food waste and loss mean more than what is on your plate, but how? Globally, about 1/3 of the food that is produced each year is lost or wasted! In developed countries, ~40% of food loss occurs at the consumer or retail stage, such as throwing away food not used; this is called Food Waste. In developing countries, ~40% of food loss occurs at the harvest or processing stages – this is called Food Loss. Food travelled a long journey to reach your plate. Resources such as seeds, water, feed, labour, money, land, and energy were required and transported throughout the world. Food waste and loss also contributes to our landfills and leads to greenhouse gas emissions. On this day, HCI recognizes the importance of promoting and ensuring food security for the most vulnerable. #HumansOfAirAsia “I’ve been with AirAsia for 9 years and counting. My sister Charley (who also works for AirAsia) and I were thinking of how to extend help to the frontliners, and people manning the checkpoints. First, we started providing sandwiches for them and then we told ourselves we should also give food to the hospitals, security guards and even to the delivery guys. After that, we still saw people without relief goods, so I asked my team if they can help me with this initiative since we’ve had experience in giving relief assistance. I was happy and overwhelmed that a lot of them contributed and chose to help. We were fast. In just a matter of hours, we already had a plan. We aimed for 50 packs of relief goods with rice, canned goods and noodles, plus homemade sandwiches to distribute to people in need. Once the team buys food supplies, we immediately begin repacking supplies and making sandwiches. After that, we’ll be ready for distribution. At first, there was this worry that no one would donate. I knew not everyone on the team would be able to give extra cash, but it turned out otherwise! We now have about PHP 15,000 and we’ll see if we can buy more things to give. I’m so thankful for my team. I’ve been blessed with such good people who are willing to help even though some of them were also affected by the crisis. They really made great effort to help and volunteer, especially with other teammates who needed help.
