I watched today as the team consisting of rangers, and veterinarians, battled for four hours in the most appalling weather, to save the life of a female giraffe. We responded to a call from the community that a giraffe was having difficulties birthing. The giraffe would need to be tranquillised; this is an extremely particular process due to its physiology. Basically the length of its neck means that it can extremely easily suffocate when tranquillised, so the vet team has to wake it immediately its fallen unconscious, and then hold its neck and head down to stop it standing. Once the procedure is complete they’ll release the neck and it will stand of its own accord. It became obvious early on that the calf could not be saved. If we were to save the mother the calf had to be removed. My head is still spinning through the sights and sounds of them trying absolutely everything they could to save the mother. The weather threw everything she could at us, we shivered in pouring rain, and warmed again, and steamed as we dried in the sun. The giraffe stayed with us right until the very end and then finally I think all the assembled, including the patient, realised we had come to the end of the road. I am always in awe of the work that gets done here as a matter of course. Let’s not forget that these are wild animals, and yes nature will take its course, but if we can help, I believe we should. They tried today like I’ve not seen before; they didn’t fail, they just didn’t beat the overwhelming odds that nature threw at them in so many guises. If I ever doubted the importance of these vets and rangers, I no longer do. NOAA Fisheries affiliate Vladimir Burkanov discovered an albino fur seal on a recent research trip to the remote island of Tyuleny in the Sea of Okhotsk, Russia. The reddish-gold pup has very light colored eyes and pink flippers. It was born in July 2020. The only information about how rare this sighting is comes from literature published in 1958. At the time, scientist Vic Scheffer reported that the chance of encountering a fur seal with this coloration is 1 in 100,000. Its unclear whether this particular pup will be accepted by the colony and how well it will forage after it is weaned. According to Burkanov, the seal pup looked pretty healthy when he examined it, but animals with albinism typically experience problems with their eyesight. Scientists will look for the animal when they survey the rookery again next June. Yesterday was one of those special days that you really cant put a price tag on. I was honored and privileged to work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to help grant the wish of a beautiful 8 year old girl named Jadyn Blanco, whose wish it was, for reasons I still dont understand, to meet me! This extraordinary young lady has had to fight a cancerous tumor on her brain stem as well as the tragic loss of her mother at a very young age and yet her stunning blue eyes and gorgeous smile that I know exists under that mask, helped put everything into perspective about what is important in life. Its hard for me to put into words the profound joy I felt sharing the zoo and its precious animals with this beautiful young lady. I cannot thank my co-workers enough for going out of their way to help me make this a very special day for Jadyn - one that I dont think she will soon forget! This is the first time in the history of the zoo that we opened it just for one person to have this very exclusive experience and the entire zoo was all hers! There is an old saying which states that in the end, it doesnt matter how big your house is, how fancy your car is, or how much money you have in the bank. What really matters is that you can make a difference in the life of a child.
