In July we venture out to a remote area of Western Australia to dive the third largest reef in the world. Incredibly diverse and vibrant, this particular stretch of Ningaloo Reef is known for the natural aggregation of whale sharks. Big beautiful graceful creatures who we know very little about. They are the biggest fish in the sea weighing around 40,000 lbs. Modeling suggests they live about 70 years, but again it’s not easy to measure this. Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders, so they swallow up big mouthfuls of plankton and inevitably bits of plastic. Instead of being depressed lumps wasting away, let us go support eco tourism which helps scientists learn more about these amazing animals to help protect them! As well as showing the government these creatures are worth more alive (tourism!) than dead (sold at the fish market). The part I found most fascinating, was the amount of human behaviors they embody. . . Meet Ava 🐬 and Shani 🐬, the two dolphins we had the pleasure of swimming with. Two females full of personality, loved to be petted and fun fact... they were both pregnant! We were able to take a ride with them, dance with them, feed them and see how incredibly fast they can swim! Stoked to land a beautiful Blue Marlin on our panga Nicarao today. The day started out with whitecapping onshore winds and our crew got soaked in a rainstorm 10 miles offshore. As conditions improved, we were running a Mold Craft Super Chugger on our left rigger and it was looking tantalizing - coming up and grabbing air and then blowing smoke just under the surface all morning. This blue nailed it and then lept into the air only 60 feet behind the boat. During the jump, the sun just lit it up the fish amazingly showing its beautiful colors, one of the prettiest moments Ive seen from our panga. El 11 de septiembre es el Día Nacional de la Diversidad Biológica. Una de las razones por las cuales se conmemora el día de la biodiversidad es para recordar al Sabio José Celestino Mutis, quien murió el 11 de septiembre de 1808 y quien con la Expedición Botánica dejó una significativa colección de plantas que son una notable base para el inventario nacional de biodiversidad. La importancia de la biodiversidad, así como la adopción de medidas para su conservación, uso sostenible y distribución de beneficios que se deriven de su utilización, se consignan en la Convención sobre Diversidad Biológica, ratificada por Colombia mediante la Ley 165 de 1994 y materializada a través de la Política Nacional para la Gestion de la Biodiversidad y sus Servicios Ecosistemicos. Biodiversidad del Tolima: entre parques naturales y ecosistemas estratégicos, El Departamento del Tolima si bien no lidera las listas de regiones con mayor biodiversidad del país (se ubica en el puesto 15), cuenta con unas importantes zonas ecosistémicas que incluyen una amplia variedad de parques naturales, ecosistemas estratégicos, amplias zonas hidrográficas, áreas protegidas y una incalculable biodiversidad en flora, fauna y comunidades indígenas. Oso Andino (Tremarctosornatus): El Tolima posee poblaciones de oso andino a lo largo de la cordillera central y oriental. El hábitat de potencial de esta especie abarca 17 municipios, Herveo, Casabianca, Villahermosa, Murillo, Santa Isabel, Anzoátegui, Ibagué, Cajamarca, Rovira, Roncesvalles, San Antonio, Chaparral, Rioblanco, Planadas, Cunday, Dolores y Villarrica. El treking consiste en una caminata que comienza a las 8:30 de la mañana con el objetivo de llegar a a la cima de un cerro dónde se avistan aguilas y Condores. En el recorrido está la posibilidad ver cernícalos, peucos, Chunchos, carpinteritos, loicas, degús, aguiluchos, pequenes, turcas, zorros culpeo y muchas cosas más, además en primavera el cerro comienza a florecer y en la cima se tiene una hermosa vista de la cordillera. ULTIMA HORA: Ya tenemos las conclusiones a las hipótesis del comité de expertos con motivo de las orcas gallegas y sus problemas con los veleros. El comité lo forman un nutrido grupo de expertos en orcas del Estrecho, Portugueses y por Galicia, la Coordinadora para el Estudio de los Cetáceos Marinos (CEMMA). El martes dieron una rueda de prensa de una hora de duración y este es el resumen elaborado por verballenas.com Desde el 10 de agosto ha habido en total 29 contactos con orcas (10,3 % sin consecuencias, 24,1 % consecuencias leves que no impidieron la navegación y 20,6 con consecuencias más serias que si impidieron la navegación). El 44,8% restante son orcas avistadas en migración. Algo tienen muy claro. NO SON ATAQUES. Así ha quedado demostrado que son INTERACCIONES PRODUCTO DEL JUEGO y la curiosidad de un par de orcas jóvenes que en cuanto rompen el timón o el barco se para totalmente, pierden interés. También y gracias a la fotoidentificación se sabe que este grupo de orcas vienen desde el Estrecho de Gibraltar, donde aparecieron por primera vez en el 2013. Que son orcas que allí interaccionan con pesqueros de palangre. Que las adultas no se acercan a los veleros y sólo lo hacen dos jóvenes muchas veces en silencio y por la popa (parte de atrás del barco). Otro detalle a tener en cuenta que dos de estas orcas jóvenes presentan heridas muy graves en su cuerpo y que no descartan que esas heridas hayan sido el detonante. El comité de expertos aseguran que este hecho es muy aislado e inédito y más en Galicia donde las orcas siempre pasan rápidas por estas aguas para adentrarse al Golfo de Bizkaia. Es muy raro que lleven mas de dos semanas, y puede estar motivado por la presencia de grandes atunes rojos, su comida. El comité sigue trabajando y en alerta. Desde março, houve um aumento de 30% no número de botos-cor-de-rosa vistos no Rio das Pérolas, em Hong Kong. Desde o início da pandemia, houve menos tráfego no rio de barcos e balsas. Isso tornou as águas ao redor muito mais calmas e silenciosas, o que encorajou os botos-cor-de-rosa a voltarem. Os mamíferos - também conhecidos como golfinhos cor de rosa - estavam voltando para partes do Delta do Rio das Pérolas que eles normalmente evitariam por causa das balsas que ligam Hong Kong a Macau. Cientistas tiveram a rara chance de estudar os mamíferos e ver como o ruído da água os afeta. Escorts are mature humpback whales that tag along with a mother and her calf to help fend off predators. They basically run interference between them and whatever the perceived threat is. They usually stay in the background and very often you do not even realise they are there. It happened to me a few times that we were observing a mother and her calf when suddenly the escort made a close appearance. Escort humpback whales are usually male. Although they provide protection for the mother and her calf, their motivation is hardly altruistic. Basically they are hoping to be allowed to mate with the mother when she is ready to do so. Female humpbacks are also known to sometimes act as escorts. It is not known why they take up the escort role, but the answer probably lies in the social nature of the whales. Olivillos, robles y otras especies nativas se vieron afectadas por una tala ilegal llevada a cabo en el Parque Metropolitano Cerro Caracol en la ciudad de Concepción. El hecho fue confirmado por la administración del lugar el pasado 17 de septiembre. Desde el parque informaron que desconocidos accedieron al lugar aprovechando el bajo flujo de gente debido a la cuarentena que confina a toda la Provincia de Concepción. En conjunto a la tala, informaron que un grupo de monitos del monte (Dromiciops gliroides) se vio directamente afectado por este hecho. En el parque es posible avistar otras especies nativas como zorros, güiñas y concones, los cuales se han acercado a los sectores urbanos gracias a la disminución del flujo de personas. Juan Medina, administrador del parque, confirmó que esta no es la primera vez que desconocidos acceden al lugar para realizar estas prácticas. Como todos los 25 de Septiembre ... Hoy se celebra en el Municipio de Puerto Pirámides el aniversario del rescate de “Garra”, un juvenil macho de diez metros de ballena franca que se había enredado con las cadenas de un catamarán fondeado en la bahía. Gracias a los esfuerzos conjuntos de toda la comunidad, Garra pudo ser rescatado y en el año 2003, se declaró esa fecha “Día Nacional de la Ballena Franca”. Varios de los vecinos que participaron de ese rescate, viendo la necesidad de organizar una mejor respuesta a ese tipo de eventos, presentaron en ese momento un proyecto de creación de una red de varamientos oficial, el mismo finalmente pudo concretarse en el año 2009 con la creación de la Red de Fauna Costera Chubut, la cual en el día de hoy trabaja diariamente en toda la región. La historia de Garra📝 El 25 de septiembre de 2002, una ballena juvenil se enredó en las cadenas del fondeo de un catamarán de avistajes en Puerto Pirámide. Los guías balleneros y buzos locales fueron los primeros en intentar liberarla. La imposibilidad de acceder a las cadenas en el agua los estimuló a tomar la decisión de vararla para liberarla en la bajamar. Con el esfuerzo de toda la comunidad, la ballena fue liberada de las cadenas y mantenida fresca en espera de la marea alta. Al atardecer pudo volver al mar. Debido a la llamativa marca en su lomo, este joven macho fue bautizado como «Garra». «Garra» afortunadamente pudo sobrevivir a pesar de las heridas y al estrés sufrido. Fue reavistado en septiembre del año 2006. Su supervivencia demostró cómo el esfuerzo colectivo puede tener un rol esencial en la conservación de las ballenas en nuestros mares. Para conmemorar el día en que toda una comunidad se unió para rescatar a Garra, el 25 de septiembre, la Cámara de Diputados de la Nación, declaró esa fecha como Día Nacional de la Ballena Franca Austral.🐳 A pesar del contexto que estamos atravesando a nivel mundial, 😷 es muy importante destacar este día y el respeto hacia ellas. Le vere dimensioni del megalodonte Un nuovo studio ha rivelato per la prima volta le vere dimensioni del megalodonte, comprese le dimensioni delle pinne che sono risultate essere grandi quanto un essere umano adulto. Nello studio “Body dimensions of the extinct giant shark Otodus megalodon: a 2D reconstruction”, pubblicato il tre settembre 2020 su Scientific Reports, vengono rivelate le dimensioni intere (corpo e pinne) del megalodonte (Otodus o Carcharocles megalodon). Ad oggi era stata stimata solo la lunghezza del leggendario squalo megalodonte. Ma ora, un nuovo studio condotto dall’Università di Bristol e dalla Swansea University ha rivelato le dimensioni del resto del suo corpo, comprese le pinne grandi quanto un essere umano adulto. Repost from @savethereef ⚠WARNING GRAPHIC IMAGES⚠ Tonight we premiere our @savethereef documentary as people must see how urgent it is that we take better care of our marine life and oceans. This horrific image of a pilot whale that had its tail mostly chopped off by a boat propeller off the coast of the Canary Islands should be a wake up call. Our marine life and oceans are suffering due to our carelessness and greed — we MUST CHANGE or face catastrophic consequences all within the next few years. Was this whale hit by a ship, a ferry or a pleasure boat? We will never know, but we have seen too many boats traveling at high speed through sensitive wildlife corridors. Only three people were there to hear the shrilling calls of pain and fear of this young whale. The photographer, the marine biologist and the wildlife veterinarian who were called to the scene were not able to help an animal with such a severe injury. All they could do was pull it out of the water and, with the kind of sorrow that can only be understood by people with enough empathy to do what they had to do, sedated it until it died. Sparing more unnecessary suffering to an animal with no chance of recovery was what they had to do. What the rest of us need to do is to become more engaged and care for our wildlife, oceans and limits is very difficult but it all begins with awareness and public pressure; the kind that demands that the voices of millions of people are heard. As angry and sad as this photo makes us, we are also extremely motivated to do something about it. We hope our @savethereef documentary inspires people around the world to treat our marine ecosystem better and to take action to push for laws that prevent this kind of tragedy from happening in the future. La leyenda sobre los delfines cuenta que nacieron de una familia de humanos que huyó de Tierra del Fuego nadando por los mares durante días. Uno de ellos, llamado Kemanta, no sabía nadar, así que toda la familia lo ayudó a surcar los mares levantándolo sobre el agua. Cuando llegaron al lugar de destino estaban tan felices por haber sobrevivido que siguieron nadando hasta convertirse en delfines. La loica es protagonista de un sinnúmero de leyendas, una de ellas cuenta que esta ave salvó a un cazador herido, y que al auxiliarlo su pecho se manchó con su sangre. Hoy lleva el pecho rojo como galardón por su valentía. Por su parte, dicen que el tordo y el queltehue nos indican el clima. Se puede diferenciar a simple vista, y aunque por lo general tienen plumaje tricolor en ocasiones pueden tener pequeñas plumas de color verde. La forma de su pico las ayuda a levantar partes de los troncos para alimentarse de semillas que otros animales no alcanzan. Es la tercera más grande dentro del grupo de los loros, mide entre 85 y 90 cm. Es un pájaro exótico muy sociable de hábitos diurnos. De comportamiento monógamo es habitual verlos en bandadas de decenas de ejemplares. Se asocian para protegerse, buscar alimento, dormir y acicalarse. Solo se separan del grupo en época de celo. Las Bandera pueden tener una esperanza de vida muy grande, incluso mayor que el de algunas personas. La media de su longevidad es de 80 años. Pero se tiene constancia de ejemplares que han alcanzado los 100 años. Es capaz de producir descendientes con especies distintas a la suya, conocidos como híbridos. Aquellos que produce con otras especies del género Ara son fértiles, por lo que también pueden reproducirse y generar nuevos híbridos. De igual forma puede cruzarse con miembros del género Anodorhynchus (las guacamayas azules, como la película de 2011 llamada Río), pero en este caso la descendencia es infértil. The eastern bluebird is a member in the genus Sialia of the thrush family. It is one of the few thrush genera in the Americas. Bluebirds are about 6 to 8 inches long, have a wingspan of 9 to 12 inches long, and weigh around 1 ounce. It displays very vibrant colors. The male is blue on top, has a reddish-orange throat and breast, and a white underside. The female sports the same colors, but they are not as bright. Bluebirds are territorial, and build nests in cavities to protect their young (in a behavior similar to woodpeckers). The female bluebird may lay 3 to 8 pale blue eggs at one time and then incubates them alone. During this time, the male bluebird takes responsibility for gathering food. The eggs hatch after 2 weeks, and the nestlings will open their eyes within 4 to 6 days. The chicks are ready to leave the nest within 18-20 days of hatching, but if this was an early brood one bird may stay back with its parents to help with the next brood. Bluebirds can produce between two and four broods during the spring and summer. Bluebird flocks migrate to the southeastern United States and Mexico during winter. These birds have a lifespan of 6 to 10 years in the wild. Wild bluebird numbers had been in decline, due to the destruction of their habitat and competition with invasive species like house sparrows and starlings. However, in recent years bluebird sightings have been on the rise. This upswing is the result of a movement of volunteers establishing and maintaining bluebird trails. . Today is World Rabies Day. This deadly disease impacts both humans and wildlife. We acknowledge this day by raising awareness about why and how to prevent the spread of this deadly zoonotic disease. Rabies was first diagnosed in South Africa in 1893. In 2007, after an absence of nearly 30 years, rabies re-emerged in the Ehlanzeni District (particularly Nsikazi & Bushbuckridge) bordering the Greater Kruger National Park. While preventable, rabies results in near 100% fatality in humans and is a serious public health concern. Rabies can also transfer from domestic animals to wildlife and can have severe impacts on populations of Endangered species like African Wild Dogs, where it can easily wipe out an entire pack. Our first line of defence is to vaccinate domestic dogs to eliminate the disease in these reservoir hosts. However, due to the rapid reproduction of domestic dogs, this is not always feasible. Therefore, we routinely vaccinate African Wild Dogs during relocation and reintroduction operations. We may also vaccinate packs that are at higher risk of encountering domestic dogs. We have worked with partners to deploy targeted vaccination of individual Wild Dogs in the Greater Kruger National Park and as part of the Wild Dog range expansion project. 71 Wild Dogs (41 males & 30 females) from 22 packs received the initial vaccine, and 62 animals from 21 packs received secondary vaccinations. After an exhausting month for our team in Pakistan, 3 wolves and 2 monkeys are now in their new home with spacious enclosures. Today, together with the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board (IWMB), Dr Amir Khalil and his team have managed to safely transport the animals to the Ayub Park an hour away from the capital. FANTASTIC NEWS!! 📣 In an historic win for animal welfare France is bringing in new legislation to phase out fur farms, animal circuses, and dolphinariums! 🐬 🌊 The countrys three dolphinariums will no longer be able to breed, or bring in new dolphins. There will also be a ban on any new dolphinariums, and the government is looking at the idea of a sanctuary to retire the remaining dolphins and orcas currently held in captivity. AFD attended a protest at Marineland Antibes in France last year, and are overjoyed to hear this marine park will no longer be allowed to breed dolphins and orcas in tiny tanks. France’s Ecological Transition Minister, Barbara Pompili, has announced a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses to take effect ‘over the next few years’ as well as measures against keeping dolphins and killer whales in captivity in marine parks and the raising of mink on fur farms. Pompeii announces that It is time that our ancestral fascination with these wild beings no longer translates into situations where their captivity is favored over their well-being. With more than 20 European countries that already limit or ban animals in circuses, France is next and with around 500 wild animals in French circuses they’ve got a long way to go. Pompeli states solutions will be found on a case-by-case basis, with each circus, for each animal. They will also be spending eight million euros to help circuses and dolphinariums adapt to the new bans.
