El Parque Nacional Los Glaciares está ubicado en la región conocida como Andes Australes del territorio argentino, al sudoeste de la provincia de Santa Cruz en el límite con Chile. Por su imponente belleza natural, constituye una maravilla única en el mundo, y fue declarado Patrimonio Mundial por la UNESCO en el año 1981. Debe su nombre a la presencia de numerosos glaciares que se originan en el gran Campo de Hielo Patagónico -el manto de hielo más grande del mundo después de la Antártida- el cual ocupa casi la mitad del Parque. También conocido como Hielo Continental Patagónico, alimenta 47 grandes glaciares, de los cuales 13 descienden hacia la cuenca Atlántica. Además existen más de 200 glaciares de menor magnitud, independientes del Campo de Hielo Patagónico. Si bien las grandes masas de hielo suelen encontrarse en nuestro planeta a más de 2500 metros sobre el nivel del mar (msnm) los glaciares de la provincia de Santa Cruz tienen su origen a solo 1500 msnm de altitud y descienden hasta los 200 msnm, permitiendo un acceso y visualización única en el mundo. Follow @Mitty for more. — REPOST • @natgeo Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Mitty As our ship made its way into an inlet late in the evening, as we were looking for shelter, we were greeted by a colony of Adélie penguins along the soft slope of an iceberg. After hours of diving deep into the frigid black waters off Antarctica in search of silverfish and krill, they shuffled into groups and greeted one another in a chorus of raspy squawks. The survival of these plucky little birds is dependent on the natural rhythm of sea ice as it forms and recedes—a cycle that is now threatened as global temperatures rise. As I watched them gossip among themselves and preen their salty feathers, I worried about their future. Our @Sealegacy team has worked to establish marine protected areas around Antarctica to reduce the impacts of a drastically shifting climate, giving sea life a chance to recover. The battle against climate change is both a sprint to save our global biodiversity and a marathon to mitigate the effects on future generations. It’s going to take all of us to meet these challenges and save our oceans. The next morning we took a Zodiac through the beautiful Cierva Cove just off the Antarctic Peninsula. The blue ice was spectacular and the wildlife was too! I saw my first Adelie penguin and Crabeater seals. We also saw a large colony of Chinstrap penguins. In the afternoon, we went ashore at Mikkelsen Harbor, an old whaling station. Developing a strong mindset to achieve your goals! With @icelandic_explorer / Going to Greenland is truly a life changing experience and even if our trip last year was great, I will never forget my first journey there. Being so alone and far away from the world is truly humbling and being in a country that is so endlessly vast really helps put so many things into perspective when it comes to living in a busy and continuously connected world. In this regard, I believe self-reflection and self-discovery are really important. We so often think that we have things figured out, only to realize that we didn’t at all. In terms of becoming whole on the inside, I think one of the most important parts is learning to be kind and patient with yourself. It is something I am being constantly reminded of myself, but I always have a hard time learning. But it is so helpful in terms of letting go of whatever is happening on the inside. It is also really important to realize that you cannot do this journey by yourself - it is really important to seek ways to find support, whether it is through yoga, meditation, counseling, or other. For the journey, it is also important to remember that it is not something that you suddenly fix and then never have to deal with again. Real change takes years and it’s an ongoing process and journey. Self-reflection and awareness is a bit like a muscle; if you haven’t used it, it is very weak and it’s really hard in the beginning. But it gets easier as you continue to practice. On the other hand, the muscle also gets weaker if you don’t continue to exercise. Nature plays a huge role in the personal journey of becoming more whole on the inside, and gives so much space for reflection, partly because it helps us enter a more mindful and kind space within ourselves. It removes so many of the modern-day stresses, other peoples expectations of what we should be. Nature doesn’t care, it is just there - as long as we take good care of it. Combined with fresh air, exercise obviously makes us feel better which makes a sometimes hard journey much easier. #Repost @sandywijaya ・・・ Winter in Baikal is a real fairy tale land, which is no surprise as the deepest and purest lake in the world, surrounded by stunning mountain landscapes. The ice of the frozen lake is unique as it is absolutely see-through and when you are walking on it you can see several metres down. Baikal freezes relatively late and in January lots of ice-hummocks form massive blocks of ice, some reaching heights of multi-storey buildings. The Antarctic ice sheet spans an area of almost 14 million square kilometres being the largest single mass of ice on earth, with the oldest core ever extracted to be estimated at 800,000 years old. Since the last glacial period around 120,000 years ago, we have been in an interglacial era called the Holocene. This year we experienced the hottest day on recent record in Antarctica at 18°C on the 6th of February. Continuing with drum scanning examples, this image of a tabular iceberg was photographed on 35mm Kodak E100. The drum scan produced a file 11,500 pixels on the long edge, and a file size of about 720 MB. While I don’t photograph much 35mm personally, it always blows me away how much resolution and depth is still capable with such a small piece of film. Swipe right to see 100% crops!
