#Repost @cadets2.0_ve • • • • • • At Sea Riverdance was a RORO ferry in service with Seatruck Ferries on the Irish Sea. On 31 January 2008 she was hit by a wave that caused her cargo to shift and she beached at Blackpool, very close to the boundary with Cleveleys. Large amounts of the ships cargo was spilled overboard after the ship ran aground, resulting in much of it being salvaged by members of the public. ON THIS DAY… in 1916, Yelcho arrived into Punta Arenas in Chile. Onboard the vessel was the crew who had left England with Ernest Shackleton two years earlier, 22 of whom had been stranded on Elephant Island for 137 days, with little to keep them going other than the belief that their leader would one day return to rescue them. On 30 August 1916, that day came. - The Yelcho rescue was all the more impressive given that the vessel was deemed unfit for purpose prior to departure; her steel-built steamer was not strengthened against the thick ice and she had no proper heating system. How Carthage lost the 1st War with Roma - Part 1 The First Punic War (264 to 241 BC) was the first of three wars fought between ancient Carthage and the Roma Republic, the two great powers of the Western Mediterranean. In the longest continuous conflict and greatest naval war of antiquity, the two powers struggled for 23 years for supremacy, primarily on the Mediterranean island of Sicily and its surrounding waters and islands, but also in North Africa and even in the South of Italy. The war began in 264 BC when the Romans answered to a request of help by the Marmetines who were a group of mercenaries who had captured the city of Messana by treachery and raided many cities in Sicily after that. Defeated by Hiero II (a tyrant of Syracuse) at the Longanus River and in a dire situation, they called for help from a nearby fleet from Carthage, which established a garrison in Messana. Seing this, the Syracuse forces retreated, not wishing to confront the Carthaginians. Uncomfortable under the Carthaginian protection, the Marmetines appealed to Rome to be allowed into the protection of the Roman people. At first, the Romans did not wish to come to the aid of soldiers who had unjustly stolen a city from its rightful owners but the prospect of enrichment from the gains of war and stopping Carthaginian expansion over Sicily that could eventually be a threath to the South of Italy changed their minds and they accepted an alliance with the Marmetines. Ironically, Roma had recently punished a Rhegion garrison composed of soldiers with similar origin as the Marmetines that had expelled the original Rhegion citizens. In response, Syracuse allied itself with Carthage. With Rome and Carthage brought into conflict, the Syracuse/Marmetine conflict quickly escalated into the First Punic War. On December 14, 1912, a 17-year-old Pietro #Favero boarded the La Provence transatlantic cruise liner in Le Havre, France and departed for a new life in the western world. After seven days at sea he safely arrived in New York and was “manifested” at Ellis Island before starting his journey to find work in Dunmore Pennsylvania. We are curious to learn about his life in Vittorio, Italy before he decided to start a new adventure. Why did he leave? Who went with him? How did he get to France and how long did that take? Who did he know in Dunmore? Someday we hope to find these answers. - - When launched on March 21, 1905, La Provence was the largest ship in the French merchant marine and the largest built in France. The ship was designed with accommodation for 397 first class, 205 second class and 900 third class passengers served by 435 crew members for a total of 1,937 persons. The ship operated on the Havre—New York route, making one crossing in six days and four hours for an average of 21.63 knots. Silhouettes — Haven’t done one of these in a while. Japanese battleship Yamashiro silhouetted against the horizon after her big 1930-4 modernization, which resulted in the extensive bridgework the class is known for. Yamashiro’s reconstruction took lessons from Fusō’s, which was considered less successful; improvements to Yamashiro’s pagoda, for example, negated the need to move the third turret as was done on her sister, while her stern was lengthened by 25’ during initial work, rather than afterwards as with Fusō. Other improvements included an elevation change to 43° for the main battery and 30° for the secondary, the addition of torpedo bulges and additional armor, complete replacement of machinery, and the deletion of a stack and her hull-mounted torpedo tubes. Yamashiro would go on to become the last battleship to be defeated in battle by enemy battleships, succumbing to torpedo and gunfire damage at the Battle of Surigao Strait. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

A little history lesson looking at the ‘Super J’, Ranger - the fastest of all the American J’s. 1️⃣ Starling Burgess and Olin J Stephens designed Ranger for Harold Vanderbilt’s 1937 America’s Cup defence against Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Endeavour II. 2️⃣ Built from high grade steel, Ranger was launched on 11th May 1937. Disaster struck on the delivery trip from Maine to Newport when rigging parts fell from the mast whilst under tow. Nothing could be done at that stage of the delivery and the top 30 broke off. Fortunately, a new aluminium mast built for Rainbow was loaned to the project and used throughout the Defender series until Rangers mast could be repaired. 3️⃣ Ranger went on to prove conclusively that she was the fastest of all the American yachts. She beat the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. 4️⃣ By the end of 1941, Ranger, which had been laid up with all the other US Js, was scrapped. 5️⃣ The Ranger that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark in 2003. On 19 November 1944, Shinano was formally commissioned at Yokosuka, having spent the previous two weeks fitting out and performing sea trials. Worried about her safety after a U.S. reconnaissance bomber fly-over, the Navy General Staff ordered Shinano to depart for Kure by no later than 28 November, where the remainder of her fitting-out would take place. Abe asked for a delay in the sailing date as the majority of her watertight doors had yet to be installed, the compartment air tests had not been conducted, and many holes in the compartment bulkheads for electrical cables, ventilation ducts and pipes had not been sealed. Importantly, fire mains and bailing systems lacked pumps and were inoperable; even though most of the crew had sea-going experience, they lacked training in the portable pumps on board. The escorting destroyers, Isokaze, Yukikaze and Hamakaze, had just returned from the Battle of Leyte Gulf and required more than three days to conduct repairs and to allow their crews to recuperate. - @world_ofwarship_13 on Instagram
