Increíble volver con una nueva visión 20 años después, agradecida de poder disfrutar de este planeta tierra, pero muy triste de ver la desaparición de los glaciares a una velocidad de nuestra generación, en el Carihuairazo existía una gran extension de glaciares, ahora ya no queda si no un pedacito de hielo, el resto nos lo hemos consumido, si, nosotros en 1-2 generaciones, fuimos y seguimos siendo responsables con lo que pasa en nuestra casa, en nuestro hogar, el planeta tierra. . . . . . Both Brendan and I were looking forward to the gentle reopening of Garibaldi provincial park. We decided to make our first outing in the park on for the books. - The Wedgemount range five peak circuit was our objective for the day. Our route would follow Mt. Cook, Mt Weart (armchair traverse), Wedge (NE aréte), Mt. Parkhurst and Mt. Rethel. After a long day of scrambling over relatively consistent 4th class ridge lines and rather un inspiring talus slopes we arrived at the car in 11 hours 6 minutes. Supposedly this is a new Fastest Known Time. - Our route was once again inspired by @skiericcarter’s 2015 mission on this route. - Our stats for the day were • 3500 meters of gain • 27.5 KM • 11:06 total time • lots of junk food consumed - Like usual @brendanarmdog was an amazing partner whom I always feel has my back and keeps the mood light! Aujourdhui je dévoile cette photo, mais aussi le projet qui se cache derrière! La beauté éphémère de la glace me fascine et occupe une grande partie de mon esprit ces dernier temps. Un projet qui prend racine lors dun voyage en Suisse avec @subterranologie en revenant ces quelques jours daventures je me suis énormément renseigné sur les glaciers et cavitées incroyables qui en découle. Comme cest bien souvent le cas, quand je commence à mintéresser à quelque chose jai beaucoup de mal à décrocher. Au fil de mes recherches et nouvelles explorations, je prends connaissance de diverses caractéristiques techniques me mène à une question: Où peut-on trouver ces magnifiques grottes bleues? Et bien pour vous répondre de façon complète et précise une publication instagram ne suffira pas, ni même un article de blog... elle mérite bien plus! Cest là que je vous expose les grandes lignes de ce nouveau projet. A chaque fois que je réalise de nouvelles explorations, je passe des heures en amont à lire des livres, etudier, une fois sur place jen apprends souvent encore plus ! Au cour de ces observations je prends des notes, des croquis, des photos, jécris et aujourdhui je souhaite vous partager ce concentré dinformations avec des petits livres brochés! Wow...• @lnapier_ “The Great Basin started out awesome! The terrain was almost completely flat, we had longer water carries but that’s usually not an issue and warm weather. We got to see wild horses and some amazing sunsets. Heading into the basin we knew that a cold front was coming in on Tuesday. What no one knew was this cold front was also bringing 5-10” of snow and 50+ mph winds... Waking up on Tuesday morning our tents were buried under huge snow drifts. We managed to pack up and get out but soon found the conditions to be unsafe. With cold, wet and frozen gear we made the call to bail out and make our way in town. @mdre92: “I thought to myself that the essence of alpinism lies in true adventure. I was deeply content that I had not carried a watch with me to keep time, as the obsession with time and speed is in fact one of the greatest detractors from the alpine experience. I was happy that my entire adventure had been onsight, on my first visit to the mountain, and that the route had been in completely virgin condition. One of the greatest challenges of mountaineering is in dealing with the natural obstacles the mountain provides. So often in modern alpinism routes will be fearsomely difficult for the first party of the season, and then once the obstacles have been cleared, a track established, the tunnels dug, the way becomes easy to follow. Climbing routes with an established track simply in order to attain the summit, or keeping time in order to set records reduces the adventure of alpinism to that of a sport climb and strips the route of its full challenge. As a young climber, it is undeniable that I have been manipulated by the media and popular culture and that some of my own climbs have been subconsciously shaped through what the world perceives to be important in terms of sport. Through time spent in the mountains, away from the crowds, away from the stopwatch, and the grades, and all the lists of records, Ive been slowly able to pick apart what is important to me and discard things that are not. Of course the journey of learning never ends, but Ive come to believe that the natural world is the greatest teacher of all, and that listening in silence to the universe around you is perhaps the most productive way of learning. So often people are afraid of their own thoughts, resorting to drowning them out with constant noise and distraction. Is it a fear of learning who we actually are that causes this? Perhaps we are afraid to confront our own personalities that we go on living in a world of falseness, striving to be perceived by the world around us as something that we are supposed to be rather than living as who we are.” - @markoprezelj on Instagram

Réveillé aux premières lueurs par la mélopée du lagopède j’ouvre un oeil timide et scrute l’horizon à travers l’ouverture de la tente. Les lacs d’altitudes commencent leur lent dégèle et arborent des couleurs antarctiques. Un bouquetin curieux s’avance dans ma direction, gardien des cimes. L’aiguille verte se détache à l’horizon. Pehuen m’a appris qu’un loup avait été photographié dans la vallée, il y a un peu moins d’un mois. Le sauvage revient, silencieux, dans l’ombre, à pas feutré. Il traverse les montagnes, parcours les champs et arpente les forêts, invisible aux yeux de la plupart. Avec lui revient le maillont manquant, l’équilibre perdu depuis de nombreuses années. The rate of loss is staggering and to see it first hand was humbling. - 5 nights camping at almost 6000m wasn’t always the nicest, but to spend that amount of time up there and truly explore all sides of the crater was an incredible experience. Cave explorer Steve Keene climbs out of an icy chasm in Alaskas Matanuska Glacier. Keene is one of a growing number of citizen scientists who use their backcountry skills to help scientists work in the worlds remote and difficult-to-access places. On this project, Keene worked with glaciologists to map caves carved by water flowing through the Matanuska Glacier. The Fractured Skin of the Hooker Valley — 5 years ago I started to become interested in ice. It was during a photography assignment looking at the beauty of life and death. I used ice to freeze floral life, intending for the plants to be the main subject, however the ice always stole the show — the intricate fissures and air bubbles imprisoned within the frozen medium, glowing white under studio lighting. I think this is where the love for close-up of ice and snow-capped mountains may have stemmed from. Isn’t it mind-blowing how with a variance of pressure and warmth, these entirely unique textures can be created; in something as small as an ice cube, and as large as an icecap. I spot ice cream that’s frozen too hard, camembert cheese that’s dried out in the sun, and the left over crumbs at the bottom of the cookie packet. These five pictures show Sonam Tshering Sherpa nearing the summit of Mt. Everest on a windy 4th of October, 1992. Nine days before, we had reached the south summit (8,750 m, 28,704 ft) (me without supplemental oxygen), but had to return because it was too cold, too windy and my feet were becoming dangerously cold. This time -before starting our 2nd summit attempt- I spent two nights at the South Col (7,906 m / 25,938 ft) without supplemental O2. Unfortunately, once again, the wind was strong and so I finally decided to climb with one 2-litre bottle of oxygen. After taking this sequence of pictures, the battery of my SLR camera was empty - so our only summit shot was taken with Sonam’s disposable Fuji Quicksnap camera. I will show it in my next post. Behind Sonam, to the right, you see the starting part of the unclimbed east ridge of Nuptse, and straight behind him, you see the unclimbed southwest ridge of Lhotse. We were the only climbers on the summit of Mt. Everest that day, which is pretty rare nowadays. . . . . . Not your average ski tour. Big country, exposure, scree walking, hot weather. Compressed, icy, dense snow. Skinned knees, skinned elbows, bruises. @janinakuzma and @anna_smoothy were familiar with the conditions New Zealand could dish out, but it was all new to @ayakokurodaa, more accustomed to skiing in Japan. As the team crossed the Southern Alps from Aoraki / Mount Cook Village to the Fox Glacier, the ski trip turned into a gnarly ski tour, as they were chased by weather the whole way through, putting in long days, and rushing to refuge at the next hut. I come from a part of the world where the average carbon footprint surpasses our basic needs of humans and jet it seems that our culture knows no end to our greed. here’s some more pictures from a privileged white guy about a very known problem. our glaciers are vanishing at an extraordinary rate. the Rohne gletscher in Wallis, Switzerland is a prime example. shrinking on average by 8.5m a year. By 2060 the glacier will be half the size of what it is now. what makes this glacier a little special is the fact that the locals have covered the base with blankets which reflect sunlight from the ice - it’s a short time solution. The Rohnegletscher has a financial gain for local businesses which is fuelling the blanket thesis. I’m preaching from a standpoint which I have no excuses for as I own 2 cars, ride a motorbike and like to ingest tropical fruit. however if we can remind ourselves of the things outside of a pandemic which are still ongoing - do our bit, be conscious about our actions we can do better than our past generations have managed #climatechange #climate #glaciers #photography #documentary - @danyaschwertfeger on Instagram

How fast does the glacier move? The velocity of the main icefall, where the glacier is narrow, shallow, and steep, is around 4-5m a day. Down on Victoria Flat, the ice is generally moving less than 0.5m a day, as the valley widens, the gradient eases, and the ice thickens. Part 1/2 This time last year I set off on a 80 day trip around the world. I joined a group of strangers and we visited 18 countries and 6 continents. If you’re new, here’s what went down: I cried the first 25 days out of sheer disbelief that little ol’ me got this opportunity. I tested my limits on treacherous, multi days hikes across the Carpathian Mountains in Romania, the Kumano Kodo trail in Japan, the Australian Outback I went nearly 45 days of the trip without cell service or wifi and I didn’t miss a thing. In fact, I felt more at peace than I have in years. I was enchanted by the majestic madrasas & mosques in Uzbekistan but wound up disenchanted by the worst food poisoning that made me feel like I was on my death bed. I got a birds eye view of the Masai Mara National Reserve during my first hot air balloon ride over the park. I danced and ate and drank with Masai Warriors who drove us to see the Safari on foot. I witnessed the Big 5 in their natural habitat while sipping Rose and to this day, it’s one of my all time favorite travel memories. I fell in love with the toilets, savoured the best ramen of my life, and I swear I ate what must have been a 20 course meal in Japan. I got the chance to witness New Zealand’s jaw-dropping Fjords, glaciers and mountains by helicopter TWICE. We all squeezed into a small sailboat for 3 days at the edge of the world in Patagonia, Chile with not a single soul in sight. Nothing but vast forests, dramatic fjords, open waters, azure glaciers, and pisco sours. I marvelled at the mystery that is Bhutan and huffed and puffed as we made our way up to the sacred monastery(Tiger’s Nest) that hung high up in the clouds at an altitude of 10,232 feet. I witnessed human ashes be deposited into the Nepal’s Bagmati River during live cremation ceremonies. With less than 48 hours in Kathmandu, we savored every Momo(Nepalese dumpling)...I mean, moment. I shouted “Look ma, no hands!”, while floating in one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world - the Dead Sea. SEE NEXT POST - @hey_ciara on Instagram
