Continuing with drum scanning examples, this image of a tabular iceberg was photographed on 35mm Kodak E100. The drum scan produced a file 11,500 pixels on the long edge, and a file size of about 720 MB. While I don’t photograph much 35mm personally, it always blows me away how much resolution and depth is still capable with such a small piece of film. Swipe right to see 100% crops! Our adventures in Antarctica focus mostly on the emperor penguins at Atka Bay. Emperor penguins breed on the sea ice making them highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, which will lead to the increased decline of this habitat. A recent study by @britishantarcticsurvey using satellite mapping technology, reveals there are nearly 20% more penguin colonies in Antarctica than was previously thought, bringing the total number on the continent to 61. The study found a number of the new colonies located up to 180km offshore, on sea ice that has formed around icebergs grounded in shallow water. Smile! The chinstrap penguin name comes from the thin line of black that extends from either side of their black cap, under the chin. Looking straight on, it almost appears as a smile, with their bill more like a nose. Visiting Antarctica, experiencing its breathtaking landscapes and being so close to incredible wildlife is truly a unique experience, and makes one understand the need to protect this last great wilderness. Later this year, the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (#CCALM) will consider creating three new marine protected areas in the Southern ocean, which would go a long way protecting this critical region.
