In 1861, when French painter Jules Breton finished the Peasant Woman Threading a Needle, the United States Senate had just passed a series of laws I had never heard of called the Confiscation Act of 1861. At the time a few states had succeeded from the Union and this act gave the federal government the power to confiscate any property being used to aid the Confederacy. Although I am firmly in the people are not property camp, it does seem pretty hypocritical to say “Hey you can’t own people and if you refuse to free them, then the government owns them.” Out of fear that this law would anger southern slaveholders, Lincoln successfully lobbied Congress to pass legislation permitting the federal government to pay slaveholders $300 for each slave they freed. In 2020, that would be about $8,571.43 each. Thats right, the federal government paid enslavers reparations! All in all, the United States government paid out over 3000 claims to 1000 slaveholders. An enslaved man named Boston Blackwell was counted among the freedmen who were considered contraband of war after the first Confiscation Act. In his narrative at age 98, Blackwell recounted running away from a plantation and hiding in the woods for 2 days and nights in the freezing cold with a younger boy also fleeing. The moment they reached the Union camp there was plenty of food and hundreds of other freed people. He remarks hearing tale of the 40 acres and a mule reparation rumors for freed people and said “It made me laugh” and that he never knew a person who got it. Just like in 1861, our government is still working the same way. What I mean is that corporate exploitation of workers at the expense of those workers and the taxpayers—most of whom are not wealthy— bankrolled the whole thing in 1861, and also in 2020. Although most people in 1861 were not rich, they allowed their elected officials to compensate slave owners with their tax money. White people didn’t have to hangout at klan rallies, lynchings or personally bomb churches to bolster white supremacy. They just had to elect officials to fund white supremacy or just not vote. We’re in the same position today, we can still change this. Vote y’all. - @darcidoesit on Instagram

Всё-всё делаю сама и фотографирую себя на телефон 🤳 🚫 no photoshop #эрмитаждома #hermitageathome #museumathome #artathome #covid_19 #tussenkunstenquarantaine #artchallenge #изоизоляция #развлекаюськакмогу #искусствобезграниц #люблюискусство #gettymuseumchallenge #gettychallenge #арт #art #betweenartandquarantine #ривгош_вдохновение #faces_and_style #academicart #lockdown #spain #cosplayart #museumseveryday #spanish #spanishart #spanishwoman #artlovers #museodelprado #эрмитаж - @muse_liza on Instagram

There are 50+ costume shops in NYC employing hundreds of people, and they are on the brink of permanent closure. These shops, and arts workers around the country need us to take action now. The Arts and Culture Industry adds $877 billion to the US economy and is seeking just 5% of that back in relief funding from Congress. The actors are the public faces and behind them are hundreds of specialists, from tailors to carpenters, sound mixers, ushers and roadies - over 5.1 million people in all 50 states are employed in the arts. Did you know that two models posed for this paintings by Ingres? Ingres used a professional model who posed in the nude. This classical approach (typical of this painter) ensured Ingres he would paint his subject with anatomical precision. Who would have guess that a nude model posed for a painting that features a gown with that much fabric! The main subject is the Princesse de Broglie Joséphine-Éléonore-Marie-Pauline de Galard de Brassac de Béarn. Queen Victorias Palace, an exhibition I co-curated with Lucy Peter, closed #onthisday in 2019. The exhibition, which coincided with the 200th anniversary of Queen Victorias birth, argued that Victorias transformation of Buckingham Palace laid the foundations for the modern #Monarchy. The refurbished Palace reflected a new form of gendered power. Victoria replaced the male values of glory, wealth, lineage, and conquest with the female values of family, duty, patriotism, and public service. These four female virtues formed the pillars not only of her reign but of every one that followed. #QueenVictoria #BuckinghamPalace #WorldMadeByWomen - @dramandaforeman on Instagram

//.Thankful to the Women of nineteenth century.// In the early years of nineteenth century When silk fabrics were found expensive Where corsets were made tight enough To keep a good body posture. The only purpose a women had after a certain age Was to be good and disciplined in three roles, To be a good daughter To be a good wife To be a good mother. The need of permission was necessary In a womens life, either if it was for love, work or marriage. Her tears were like dews on grass Which evaporated easily when there was no one to wipe them off. Her voice was like crow but just silent enough that no one can hear. Sometimes it was hard to even recognize what she is and what she had become. The only work she was allowed to do Was weave the colorful threads into a desired beautiful gown. Or to work in a factory with swollen hands. This way or the other, no women was allowed to enter into the real world. When she can be equal to men in all terms.History is sometimes quite confusing But the entrance women for fighting there rights gave a little pursuit of happiness to them Even if it took years to obtain it. It is told to a girl in her early ages, That she must marry well. Because it is believed that, Marriage is an economy proposition In a womens life. She has to marry a wealthy men, Just to save her family from reaching The stages of poverty. It is all about the capability of women That she is only capable to love. But it isnt true, Women have got beautiful minds Which can make a lot of inventions. Great enthusiasm, powerful beauty As well as essence of ambition Which is meant to be brought in the real world. And this emerged in the nineteenth century, Where women gathered courage enough to keep One foot in the queer yet chaotic world. We are thankful to those ambitioned and courageous women of the nineteenth century. To make a beautiful pathway for all the womens in the future, where she can become something and achieve everything. Thankful to Charlotte Brontë, Jane Austen, Louisa May Alcott and many other authors to bring the epitome of love, work and domesticity, and to teach the importance of women. Eleonora di Toledo was the first wife of Cosimo I de Medici. She is portrayed half-length against a deep blue background, in a sumptuous Spanish brocade gown. Her beautiful dress has a high neckline with an exquisite net of pearls covering her shoulders and a bodice decorated with an elaborate brocade with a pomegranate pattern. Eleonora is presented as a beautiful, graceful, and elegant woman, emanating youth and good health. Yet this is probably a posthumous, reduced replica of Agnolo Bronzino’s famous Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo and her Son Giovanni, in the Uffizi Galleries. This is implied by the Latin inscription on the upper edge, ‘Favour is deceitful and beauty vain’ a reminder that all that is beautiful shall pass. 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐞 𝐁𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐲𝐧 & 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫 I covered the family relation between Queen Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard, 2nd and 5th wife of Henry VIII. BUT…sorry for yelling…I think Henry wanted to keep it in the family, because Anne wasn’t only the cousin of Cat H…But of Jane Seymour as well. Lets go back to the early 15th century, where a certain 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘺 was married twice. Her 1st husband 𝘚𝘪𝘳 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘛𝘺𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘺 and her had only one child, little girl, 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘺𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘺. Her 2nd hubby was 𝘑𝘰𝘩𝘯 𝘥𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘺𝘦 and their 4th child was 𝘈𝘯𝘯𝘦 𝘥𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘺𝘦. 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘛𝘺𝘭𝘯𝘦𝘺 was the grandmother of Anne Boleyn through her mother, 𝘌𝘭𝘪𝘻𝘢𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘩 𝘏𝘰𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘥.
