This is “The Reluctant Bride”, an 1866 painting by Auguste Toulmouche. The most striking aspect of this painting is the bride’s direct gaze at the viewer. Her focus is clear and despite the fact that she is comforted by the two women, she reacts to neither gesture. One is holding her hand; while the other with the shawl, who seemingly just arrived, is kissing her on the forehead. She does not respond to the sentimentality of the gestures and her gaze is defiant. A demonstration of resistance to her dilemma – that of an arranged marriage, a common occurrence during the 19th century. At that time women of these upper classes were raised with discipline and were expected to become graceful entertainers. The education the women of these classes received was supposed to highlight and emphasise the feminine qualities that every woman was expected to have. The skill-set that upper class women received through their education revolved ultimately around how to be a domestic married woman. Among the skills women were taught included: etiquette literature, musical instruments, and how to run a household. In the words of a French politician: . “Nature tells woman: Be a woman. The tender care of children, the sweet concerns of motherhood, those are your duties. But your diligence deserves a reward? Well! you will have one! You will be the divinity of the domestic sanctuary, you will rule over your household through the powerful charm of your graciousness and virtue. Foolish women who wish to become like men, don’t you already have great advantages What more do you want? There are so many lessons to be learned in looking back at the layered life of #RBG. Ones that you all have eloquently stated throughout the past 24 hours. In the collective grief, I don’t want us to miss a critical part which is how she sought joy and well-being amidst the fight. This is something that none of us do particularly well because this time and this moment calls us to be warriors, to dig deep through exhaustion and emotion for the greater good. We often feel we have no choice. But this fight is long. The haul is heavy and if we are to be at sharp mind, body and soul for what’s ahead, we must also take a page out of Justice Ginsburg’s storied book and make time for what fills us and gives us what we need to keep going. She did. An avid opera lover, she got to star in a show at the @kennedycenter, she kept her workouts consistent, traveled the world, loved the artistry of her clothed neck garments, stayed true to her faith and made time for her family and friends. She knew the value in these things making her whole. I ask that you do the same. Just because things are on fire, doesn’t mean you have to burn too. Eleonora di Toledo was the first wife of Cosimo I de Medici. She is portrayed half-length against a deep blue background, in a sumptuous Spanish brocade gown. Her beautiful dress has a high neckline with an exquisite net of pearls covering her shoulders and a bodice decorated with an elaborate brocade with a pomegranate pattern. Eleonora is presented as a beautiful, graceful, and elegant woman, emanating youth and good health. Yet this is probably a posthumous, reduced replica of Agnolo Bronzino’s famous Portrait of Eleanor of Toledo and her Son Giovanni, in the Uffizi Galleries. This is implied by the Latin inscription on the upper edge, ‘Favour is deceitful and beauty vain’ a reminder that all that is beautiful shall pass. Penn rarely agreed to photograph actors. He believed they were skillful at presenting a face they wanted the world to see and wouldn’t allow him to penetrate that mask. We wanted him to make a portrait of Cate Blanchett and thought we’d found a way around this issue—we wouldn’t photograph her as Cate Blanchett! Her film, “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” was due to open in October 2007 and the extravagant costumes appeared to be everything that Penn liked: luxurious and long, with texture and fine detail. He would photograph her as Elizabeth I. When we met, Penn carefully studied the film stills of Cate, sat back in his chair, sighed (never a good sign), and said the costumes just weren’t good enough. Would I be able to have a new costume made for our sitting? Yes, I said, trying to sound hopeful but wondering who could do it! It would have to be a designer he admired and trusted. Penn had recently enjoyed photographing beautiful clothes designed by Nicolas Ghesquière, then the designer of Balenciaga. I asked Nicolas to create his interpretation of Elizabeth I, and we talked about what could inspire Penn. He sent a drawing. Penn approved! All okay, so far. Then, a few days before the sitting, Nicolas couldn’t find a fabric he liked for the ruff, but paper doilies were exactly the look he was after. He called to ask if Penn would object to doilies? Penn loved this idea! Nicolas told me that when the costume arrived in New York, Penn called and said, “It was even better than anything I was dreaming of.” Cate was extraordinary to work with and Penn was enchanted.
