There’s this meme I’ve seen online a bunch of times. It talks about how we are strong and tough, and should approach all our days in a “be a lion” fashion. Newsflash: I’m not sure this is really a great thing to live by. Why? Lions are notoriously lazy. The females of the pride do all the work, and they only eat about once a week, if that. I could get on board with “be a lioness,” perhaps. Personally, although maybe not so in vogue, but, try picking one of the smaller herbivores. I mean really. The Matimba male Hairy Belly & Othawa pride by @cal_butler The elephants chased the three buffaloes towards the pride of lions , the pride gets up and tries his luck, at this time the old Matimba watches everything and decides to take complete control of the operation. It was only at this point that the Matimba male lion realised that his nap had been interrupted. He got up to see what all the fuss was about. It was a little comical to see him just standing there, taking in the whole spectacle. With clearly no end in sight, the Matimba decided to step in and show who is really boss. There was an initial scuffle and the Matimba managed to grab hold of the buffalo’s back. The buffalo thrashed around wildly, like a scene out of a rodeo show gone wrong. The buffalo managed to break free and dashed towards the dam wall. The pride of lions followed in hot pursuit. By this time the elephant and the other two buffalo had fled the scene. The lions were able to catch up to the buffalo quickly. This time around, the entire pride jumped in and every member had a role to play. One of the Othawa females managed to grab the buffalo by the mouth and tried to suffocate it. The Matimba male jumped onto the back, trying to break the spine, while the older of the young Othawa males tried to pin the buffalo down from behind. The youngest of the Othawa lions started to dig into the hind legs. It seems that they had finally managed to get a good grip on their prey. The buffalo gave all it had and managed to fling off the female in the front. He managed to get the tip of his horn into the female, but not causing any major injury. This was the first time that I had seen the Matimba make any effort or attempt at using his strength and power as a male lion. I had instantly gained new respect for the old male lion. He was not going to give up his hard earned meal. After a great deal of struggle, the lions managed to successfully take down the buffalo. They spent the next three days feasting along the water’s edge. This ordeal provided a great learning curve for the young Othawa lions and the Matimba male held onto his legacy as a power not to be trifled with. - @lionsightings on Instagram

OREGON: after a long 19 year wait to finally hunt Pronghorn in my home state, the dream finally became reality. Knowing this hunt is a game of patience and persistence, sharing it with those I care deeply for made it so enjoyable(Dad,Bro, Alyssa and my 8 year old niece’s first big hunt!), even with the sun beating down on us in high temps battling heat waves all day long. Update on the Mpindo: A mixed bag to say the least. The team has been following the pack day by day. Sadly they have been documenting more loses, while at the same time witnessing the pack clearly getting to grips with the challenging task of hunting. The pack had moved south into an area with no roads so we have been waiting for some days for them to re-appear. They finally did on Wednesday evening and were seen killing a waterbuck. Before they had a chance to feed on their kill, 2 lions stole it from them and 13 hyenas were counted at the kill sight as well. On Thursday morning, the team only counted 12 dogs in total. This serves to underline the tremendous pressure they are under, and while honing their hunting skills, they are still on a very steep learning curve when it comes to avoiding bigger predators. - AC Origins actually has two species of Hyenas. The Striped Hyena is actually Egypts indigenous species but are used solely as boss animals. However the Spotted Hyena, found more commonly in Sub-Saharan Africa, are the main species found throughout the game.

The best images of behaviour is where we can see the intent in the animal to do that behaviour. We can see the intreset in the one wild dog (front left) on the warthog. His intent is shown by his body lanuange. So we need to know and understand behaviour to photograph it well. Wilddog as a species will always draw attention to a photograph, becuase they are rare. Add unique behaviour to that and we have an image that is striking. Then having the golden light is just magical. *** I am just going to state one thing, the brightness of the scene and the vibrant colours, cheers the scene up a little. It does look like Pumba is going to get away here. If Felix choose an image where the pigs situation is more dire and dropped the vibrancy & expsoure down, I would almost suggest a monochrome image. T H E tide had turned out with an overcast sky. A sense of stillness emanated, even though the bustle of a new dawn slow began to arise from the feathers of crowding cormorants and the scampering of amphipods across the sand. There was an anticipation in the air, as if the rising sun also waited for a particular arrival. Fantasies of webbed feet that pad across the coastline swirled in our minds. However, we walked on, with eyes peeled for glimpses of soft brown fur and otter-esque movement. After a long early-morning expedition, when we had let go of the longing to spot one, despite numerous fresh tracks, this elusive creature finally gifted us with its presence. At this point we were not expecting to stumble upon the encounter we had been dreaming of and were totally taken aback. Seemingly unthreatened, although aware of our presence, he continued to doze in the morning sun in a hollowed out patch of sand amid the wild bracken of the coastline. Relaxed and content after a fishy breakfast of which we saw the remnants a moment before sighting him, he was clearly napping through the digestive process. The cape clawless otter, known for its webbed feet and skilled predatory tactics in the water is generally an elusive fellow along our African coastlines. Their diet consists of crabs, fish and other animals alike, and they are aided with sensitive (almost feline-like) whiskers that act as vibration and movement sensors under the water to detect prey. The scientific name of the African #wilddog is lycaon pictus, a latin term meaning #paintedwolf. Similar to other great #African #animals with distinct coat patterns, no two wild dogs have the same spotted patterns - these are unique to individual wild dogs and help members within the pack distinguish between one another. The beautiful colours of their coat (black, brown, yellow and white) also helps wild dogs blend in to their natural habitat of grassland, savannah and woodland. Unlike their domestic counterparts, wild dogs only have four toes per forefoot. In addition, a wild dogs large, round ears allow them to keep track of pack members over long distances through audio signals. African wild dogs are most active during twilight - the period immediately before dawn and after dusk - making them #crepuscular. Why Trophy Hunting Does NOT Help Conservation Advocates of trophy hunting love to call themselves conservationists and always make the claim the trophy hunting helps wildlife by bringing much needed funds to impoverished communities, distributing bush meat, and controlling wildlife populations. The claims are highly misleading, and also they are just bullshit. Sorry. If you love animals you don’t shoot them for sport. But let’s examine why it’s bullshit: 1. Wildlife populations up for trophy hunting are not in imbalance with the natural world, and the need to regulate them through culling or hunting is due to human encroachment on habitat 2. Trophy hunting is not a population management tool. We are talking about killing a small number of highly desirable animals, thus disrupting the population and gene pool. 3. Less than 5% of revenue from trophy hunts goes to local communities on average. The vast majority of their income goes to government agencies, outfitters and individuals located in national capitals and overseas. See slide 3. 4. Trophy hunting has been in practice for decades, with conservation claims dating as far back as the 1920’s. (The only exception of Kenya which outright banned trophy hunting in 1977.) If trophy hunting has already been helping conservation for decades, why are wildlife populations still plummeting? Lion trophy hunting is hardly new, and yet with all of these hunts “helping” lion conservation, wild lion populations steadily decline. In fact, The International Union for Conservation of Nature, which monitors animal populations, reports that the number of lions in five populations in Tanzania fell by two-thirds from 1993 to 2014. Another video of Flanders’ fast-growing wolf pups has been released. New video footage of the wolf pups born in Flanders last spring has been released by the Institute for Nature and Forest Research (Inbo). The pups even discovered the hidden wildlife camera and nosed it a bit before moving on. Born in early May, the pups have grown immensely, though are still extremely playful. While four pups were caught on video footage in June, only three can be seen in the latest footage, recorded by hidden wildlife cameras. According to Inbo, the fourth pup has not been seen since July. The institute cannot say with certainty whether the pup is still alive. Many wolf pups, however, do die in the first few months of life. The litter of wolves was born to August and Noëlla, the only two adult wolves currently living in Flanders. It was the first time in 150 years that wolf pups were born in the region. While several other adult wolves have spent time in Flanders over the last few years – most recently a lone male called Billy – they have all moved to other territories. Billy was last seen this summer in Germany. The wolves are mostly at home in Limburg, sometimes crossing into Antwerp province. The wolves have been responsible for the death of livestock in the area, mostly sheep, but also three llamas, a kangaroo and a cow. This had led farmers to ask for help in protecting their livestock and to be given access to tracking devices so they know where the wolves are at any given time. - @flanderstoday on Instagram

Meet Florence and her daughter Fierce. Both of them form part of the small but strong hyena clan, that we name Fube Clan, in the GMA outside Liuwa NP. We discovered the clan in 2018 and we have started to collect data on them since. A couple of weeks ago I followed Florence and Fierce on a spectacular hunt! Early in evening they encountered a small herd of wildebeest not far from the communal den. They tested the herd and managed to separate one cow. Following a report of a painted dogs den sighting in Sinamatela, our trackers Washington Moyo and Lephius Muyuni went to check it out. Behold, its the Lukodet pack and Didi, the alpha female, is denning! The pack has been off the radar for a while and tracking inside the park hasn’t been as frequent due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. We suspect this is probably the packs second den or so. Painted dogs normally move their pups to a new den site a few times during the denning period to avoid detection by other predators in the area that could pose a threat to the pack and the pups. Another reason is to avoid or reduce parasite infestations. The pups will stay at a den until they are about 4 months old. This is when they are big and strong enough to move with the pack. Unfortunately, the team did not catch a glimpse of the pups or get closer to the den as they were avoiding disturbing the site. Didi and other pack members were also jealously guarding the site against all sides. Last year Didi had a litter of 11 pups and 13 pups in 2018, though not all survived in both litters. We are happy the pack is well and growing even bigger and stronger. The last time we saw the Lukodet they were 16 strong. This rustic Luwi Bush Camp stands in a small grove of mahogany trees and has great views over a floodplain to the Luwi riverbed beyond. Although the camp is away from the main Luangwa River, there are two permanent lagoons here, each with an impressive population of hippo and crocodile. This camp houses only 5 chalets which means that individual attention is tailored for each guests’ experience. Each chalet is en-suite. The main area of the camp is comprised of a thatched roof and sandy floor, housing the bar and library. Other communal areas can be found dotted around under trees in the shade. Did you know there are only roughly 5000 African wild dogs left in the world? They are very susceptible to disease and often the whole pack will die in one go. They are so endangered mostly due to these infectious diseases, ongoing habitat fragmentation, and conflict with human activities. I love spending time with these animals and watching them hunt. An interesting update from our trackers in Mana Pools. The Nyamepi pack is well and has been doing a great job protecting its 6 pups. Whisky, the alpha female, left the den with the pups on the 26th August and have been nomadic since. She sadly lost one pup to hyenas a day after she became nomadic but the pack has managed to keep their enemies at bay since. They are doing so well compared to last year, where the pack lost 3 pups within 3 days of leaving the den. Fingers crossed, the pack will successfully raise all 6 to adulthood. Currently, the pack consists of 8 adults, one yearling, Candy (a product of father and daughter), and 6 pups that are a product of brother Gamma, the alpha-male, and sister, Whisky. Both are from the same litter of 2017 by the legendary Black-tip. - Spotted hyena cubs are born all black but gradually shed this lanugo, starting with the head and then spreading down the neck towards the back of their bodies. The rate at which the lanugo is shed can be an accurate way of aging cubs.
The Musekwe Pack pups of 2019 are all grown up! A miraculous feat considering the alpha male and father to these pups was killed by lions last year defending the den. Losing an alpha male from the pack when the pups are so young significantly reduces their chances of survival but incredibly the alpha female and her subadult offspring (born 2018) stayed united and raised a successful litter. The Musekwe Pack lives in our core research area in Kafue, an area that used to experience heavy snaring with numerous wild dogs losing life and limb to snares. Two years ago, ZCP began targeted snare sweeps working with DNPW-Panthera Antipoaching units (@pantheracats), creating a “halo” of protection around the pack’s core area and denning locations. Since then, we have seen ZERO snared wild dogs, not just for Musekwe Pack, but for all the packs that we monitor in Kafue! There are a multitude of natural and human induced threats that wild dogs are facing, but we are proud to report that our collaborative halo approach is working and its giving wild dog populations the best chance of survival in the Kafue National Park.
