I came up with this Aaron Douglas inspired lesson using very minimal materials. I used watercolor pencils (because I’d like to get SOME painting in this year) and sharpies but this could be adapted with crayons, markers or regular colored pencils. We’ll discuss his life, the Harlem Renaissance, and look at common themes of his work as well as common characteristics like angular shapes, intersecting lines to create new spaces, and silhouetted figures. I am allowing them some freedom to use colors that are in the same color family instead of focusing on tints and shades. Ed Paschke (1939-2004) was the quintessential Chicago-based artist of the Imagist generation which emerged in the disruptive period of the late 1960s. His work centered on what critic James Yood called The human figure under duress as he described the salient theme of Imagist art. Other prominent Imagists mined the psychological surrealism of lowbrow popular culture. Ed Paschke relied on photo imagery drawn directly from mass media. He was interested in the adversarial relationship between individual identity and culture (which he defined as ‘symbols, metaphors, icons…and their baggage of referentiality’). He did not have a program, he was too inventive, the master Rule Breaker. With PRIDE, I write. Babes, this share has been simmering under the surface for much too long. And as with all things, it flowed out when I was ready, though it comes a few days after our Pride celebrations here in Vancouver. As I have said often, it is a radical and revolutionary act to be yourself. It is a big FUCK YOU to the Patriarchy and to the oppressive systems that the Patriarchy upholds when we LOVE who we are and step fully into that expression. My work with STRUT CLUB has centered around this truth. I teach how to lovingly and consciously untangle from the not-good-enough, stay-small, I’m-too-much/not-quite-right messaging that the Patriarchy and Capitalism want us to believe about ourselves. And I realized over the past few months, that I had a major de-colonial untangling to face within myself AND that my silence on the matter in THIS space has perhaps contributed to separation and silence within our community. I am a queer womxn. I am married to an amazing man, and, I am also a cosmic, complicated, still learning, kinda terrified but also SO relieved, femme AF queer. I’m saying this here today to celebrate myself. I’m saying this here today to celebrate you. And I’m saying this here with the complete acknowledgement that by NOT living in the totality of my truth, that perhaps I have not created the bravest space possible for YOU to see yourself in this community and feel at home. I see how the trappings of the Patriarchy affected me in this regard and made me subconsciously fear that who I am would be perceived as threatening, other, unrelateable, too much, disturbing etc. I felt frozen in the fear of being me. And if I felt frozen, as a cis, able-bodied, privileged white Womxn, that means there are humxns struggling exponentially more than me to live safely, freely, and happily in their truth + identity. If I’m going to have a platform where I invite YOU to be sex-positive, feeling-forward, sensually activated, and, in essence, the WHOLENESS of who you are, then I have to do it too. .
