Yesterday we wrapped up the last of our guided paddle/beach clean ups and presentations on the presence of Microplastics in Lake Huron with Ocean Bridge @oceanwise Students at @campceltic. Grateful to Camp Celtic for these experiences and for these students doing the work of cleaning up our shorelines. In the passage of a few years since starting this observation based work, the problem is evidently only getting much worse. Imagine the volumes we dish out to the lake through our laundry detritus annually, or what is left behind by thousands of seasonal visitors or even our reaction to the current pandemic. What problem do we solve in trying to protect ourselves by trashing the vital source that supports our health and home? Navigating solutions to these problems may seem not possible. But water works in mysterious ways and shapes us all. It is clear the formula and education of treating the water as resource and utility hasn’t benefited the living lake. Although what we clean up today will be twice littered tomorrow, the potential for healthy water -and vibrant ecosystems of the lake- will find passage into the future through those who experience the water and its residents as living relatives. Treating the lake as a resource doesn’t require us to understand it or nurture it when it isn’t well. This song was taught to me by dear friends and it assures me the future for the lake is strong, when I hear them sing it. Fall is finally coming 🍁🍂🍃 Ive switched over to brassicas - cabbage, kale, broccoli, cauliflower. Adding in root crops like beets, radish, carrots as well. Many of you asked what happened to my old raised beds. Long story short, I had a garage sale where we sold almost everything from the old garden, including the raised beds, and donated it to my team member Clarisa whose husband has suffered a brain condition. While Im proud and grateful we were able to raise enough money ($15,000) to prevent Clarisa and her family from serious financial difficulty, I was also left without raised beds for a while ! This week, lll finally have the @birdiesgardenproducts I sell here in the USA delivered to me. I put myself on my own wait list to try and get more into customers hands first 😂 13 beds including all models I offer will be coming so I can recreate the original Epic Garden in the front yard...so rest assured I havent forgotten about urban and small space gardeners.
