We are Joy and Elise Proctor, sisters, and founders of the “Say Their Names Memorial.” As black women, these memorials and their message are of urgent importance, which is why we have worked to spread them nationally. Our goal is to honor Black lives taken by systemic racism and racial injustice while facilitating conversation around it. We put up the first memorial in Portland, Oregon alongside a group of friends with whom we continue to run nationwide facilitation of community memorials and the database of names on our website. In the coming months we hope to grow the information on our database, multiply the number of memorials around the country and create a model for community conversation around race. Because we are run by volunteers and fundraise for materials, we are in need of some help to meet our goal. It is something to be a free black woman in America; a woman with her own thoughts and resources and command of her life and time. And it is funny now, looking back, that it didn’t take a lot of years in the execution but preparation; the planning, the re-tooling, the re-imagining, that took lifetimes inside of this lifetime. It took saying yes to things I secretly hated and no to things I really craved. It took finally telling the truth about what happiness looked like; even when all I knew was that it didn’t look like what I was doing or being. The kind of free I am now comes from entering into a sweet darkness where I understood that everything - anything - was possible because I finally understood that it was all me; all potential, all power and all I had to do was choose fully what was in line with the present version of me. I had to listen to the instruction that bellowed from my center and then lean into that thing until it Became...until I Became. That is was this life is, what you see; a woman willing to lean into the darkness and magic of Gods great universe and let things and people and myself Be. Dan and I try to make it a habit to text each other before we takeoff and after we land, especially when we’re on completely different schedules and don’t get the chance to talk that day as a result. I texted Dan this picture recently and said, “all loaded up and ready to takeoff soon! I love you” followed by a “not the best picture of me but I snapped it quick to tell you I was taking off” text. To which Dan responded, “that’s a great picture babe! You look hot! Have a safe flight, I love you too!” A small normal exchange between two people in a relationship but it got me thinking. What I saw in this picture: my messy hair and no makeup on under my helmet, I felt like 1,000 lbs in my vest and all my gear, I saw the dark circles under my eyes from my lack of sleep during an exercise, etc. What I think Dan saw: his future wife doing a badass job that she loves, a woman who has literally been working her whole life to be wearing that uniform, the woman who he watches study on a daily basis to fly the plane she’s sitting in, and he saw me thriving as much while we’re apart as when we’re together (which is very important since we’re often apart!). We can be our harshest critics at times and sometimes all you need to do is step back to see yourself from someone else’s viewpoint to see just how great you really are doing. In my opinion, as a hunter you have signed a contract of responsibility. When you take an animal’s life you do owe them some duty. This isn’t for the granola crunchers or the uneducated and overly sensitive, it’s for the animal. Clean them up for your photos, this animal lived a wild a free life we should all be jealous of. They should be remembered and shared as that beautiful animal. Put their tongues away and be conscious of their good side. Properly care for their meat. They do not deserve to go wasted, whether its proper field care, processing or cooking. Practice your shooting. If you hunt long enough you will have a bad shot one day. However, it’s on you to keep those days to a minimum. Last but not least support your local and national wildlife organizations. Your license fees help with conservation but go above and beyond that, donate or volunteer. These animals deserve the best habitats and protection. :: N E W • D A Y :: • • • Wild to be packing up my 550 sq ft apt and closing a chapter on this place that cradled me as I settled into LA and started life on the left coast. When I first moved here I had a studio apt in the most beautiful family run quaint little building tucked away in Hollywood Hills. Then the next year I moved into a 1 bdrm in the same building.... I did my best to fill it with so much love, hosting friends, cooking some good meals, meditating and doing yoga in the living room. It taught me some much needed patience with learning the time it took to curate the space with all the things I loved and was inspired by. Besides some cool vintage pieces and mid century finds, I kept buying artwork and said one day I’d have enough wall space to hang it all. Some sat framed behind my coach or displayed on the floor... too many prints to count were rolled up still in their shipping carton, with hopes I’d display it one day. Well it’s moving day... And as I sat on the floor of my new 2200 sq ft home and looked at all the white walls, I’m filled with so much gratitude. While burning palo santo, I walked the hardwood floors, stood on the balconies and smelled the jasmine trees. Sat in the corner and admired how the sunlight moved around the rooms throughout the day... and today of all days, I heard my dad say, well done! Today marks 8 years since he became a new angel and I couldn’t feel more blessed to know he’s proud of me and knows I’m safe and that I am loved and despite the current climate, I am thriving. Today was just another day to most. Another day of unknowns and another day of (insert any 2020 meme) But for me today was special. • Today marks 2 years since officially taking over @crossfitkaiju. Kaiju has been apart of my life for almost 7 years. I wasn’t sure there would ever be anything to rival my love for baseball (in walks Kaiju). And has it ever. All I wanted to be when I grew up was a baseball player. Nothing more. That was it! The pinnacle of success and all I wanted. • Now ask me? I want to be the best coach/friend/mentor/therapist/future husband I can be. I’ve met life long friends, a life long life partner @chloe_easton and a love for coaching/participating something outside of baseball. Something I never anticipated. Kaiju has a uniqueness that’s hard to explain until you walk in. Something I’m proud of. Something that I hope keeps all of you coming back and wanting more. • I’ve grown a lot over the past 2 years. I’ve learned a lot. I still have a lot of growing and a lot of learning to do before this journey ends. I’m incredibly thankful to everyone that was played apart in this in the past two years. ~ Celebrating Black Lives Matters More Than My Art ~ What I attempted to create for this moment is a space where people see people. ~ Around the time that everyone was uploading a black square as an instagram post, in solidarity with Black Lives Matter or to amplify melinated voices, I thought there must be a way to create a more permanent space to champion Black Lives. I had been working on this sketchbook and realized this would be the perfect space to forego my own art and celebrate Black folks I know and love. So I asked those closest to me (except for Dave Winfield, I don’t actually know him) to send a picture of their choosing to represent them and forever hold a place to celebrate their lives. Morning light in the desert holds a quality of anticipation. Everything feels possible, all new. . . The season opener for archery antelope was spent in a place too large for words. Hands and knees full of cactus spines and sticky with crushed sage and rabbit brush. This place is alive and it breathes with you. I put 15 + miles worth of stalks on my moccasins this weekend, no blind, no decoy. Tactics may change but my gratitude for this opportunity will not. . . I find the pronghorn antelope buck a cagey and nervous animal. He is a left over from another era and is out of place in this time. His fear of the long since extinct American cheetah stays in his memory, but he looks for other predators now. He beds with his back to brush and a full view all around, his keen eye misses nothing. Musky scent and a footprint in the dust is all that is left of him as his beacon of white disappears over the horizon.
