Left overs from an amazing 200h teacher training weekend! These trainees are so inspiring and open to connect to the true intuitive self. This past weekend Rich and I came up with an “assignment” to create a themed class around a goddess of choice. They shared their 10ish min sequence on Saturday and then we ask them to sleep on it share again on Sunday.... well yoga voices and comfort was found! Up until a few years ago, I had created a narrative in my head believing that when I worked hard, I could almost “have it all” but some element of my life would always suffer. By believing this narrative I created an unintentional cycle that kept proving it to be true.⁠ ⁠ Sometimes I would kickass at work, exercise regularly, but be stuck slogging through a bad relationship that I couldn’t seem to put effort into repairing. Or I’d be in a phase where my friendships felt strong, I was creating time for fun but I’d be half-assing work and feeling unfocused. Always it seemed like 75% of my life was great and the remaining 25% couldn’t quite get its shit together.⁠ ⁠ Now I know that this frustration was because I hadn’t learned how to be aware of what I needed or wanted in life. Without giving thought to the various elements that made up my life, I wasn’t able to organize or balance them thus creating the belief that I was lacking.⁠ ⁠ I am by no means perfect now, and even with this knowledge, I won’t claim that my life is blissfully balanced. However, I have been able to achieve a version of balance that works for me, and be less hard on myself.⁠ ⁠ My life will never be in constant balance, not because I’m not working at it, but because my needs and wants will forever be shifting and evolving. To me, balance is a practice rather than an end goal. It requires nurturing, awareness, and effort.⁠ ⁠ As my needs change, the attention I give to the various elements of my life will fluctuate and change as well. This is the only consistent part of balance, everything else will keep me on my toes. ⁠ - @coach_kaelafox on Instagram

Tiny Space 3rd Odalisque Variation — swapped out a few of the arabesque to pirouette repetitions for what felt like 100 arabesques en relevé. I’m a little amazed that I can do all those arabesques on that leg as I’ve sprained that ankle so many times. ✖️Lay off the crunches!✖️ ⠀ 🔺Throughout my experience as a trainer, I’ve learned more and more about the core being more of a stabilizer. ⠀ 🔺In America, we already have too many people in hip flexion for the majority of the day (sitting 8+ hours) and experiencing low back pain. So crunches are not the best solution for “abs”. ⠀ ▪️Performing the correct “Deadbug”▪️ ⠀ 🔹Knees at 90 degrees. (Don’t bring the knees any higher than your hip joint) ⠀ 🔹Neutral spine. (There should be no arching of the spine here, which will want to happen.) ⠀ 🔹Arms vertical ⠀ 🔹Reach opposite limbs at the same time, then alternate. ⠀ 🔺I typically see lack of control in the lower lumber/pelvic region. Random shots from this past week’s practice with Dharma. I missed a few days, but am happy to practice recap Maha Shakti on replay today 8am central 9 am ET & Satsang tonight 6 central, 7 ET @dharmayoganyc 🙏🏼❤️ A few unlocks have happened. For the first time felt deeper in stork by grabbing base of skull past my ears. Also, I was able to grab both feet for the first time in full dhanurasana without using a strap and hold it for the duration Sri Dharma had us in the pose. Yes, it felt incredible and was definitely a moment of bliss. Dharma has also had us practicing in the Lord’s hand and continues to take us there while in the poses. He will say something like “your head is towards the Lord’s hand” in Kurmasana or “you are pressing your hands against the Lord’s palm” in cobra pose. It is precious and I am sure most of us are grinning ear to ear and heart to heart. Grateful to be taken to this front row seat. The senses only allow you to stay a few moments, but we must know we are always there with him and he is with us. Grateful to be where I am this life in this moment. The year 2020 has definitely been interesting for us all. I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for this practice and the teachings from this lineage. I used to plan trips and count down days to be in person with Dharma again and now get to be with him 5 days a week live and always in the collective we all exist in. Deep healing of cells and downloads continue on. The postures are just gymnastics if the mind is not fixed on the creator or done for an offering in selfless service. We must keep trying our best in love and grace for all beings everywhere. - Finally able to hold a solid crow after practicing yoga for over a year!

This pose represents the hours upon hours upon hours of practice it took to be able to do this pose. It did not happen in an instant, and if it did, it would have probably resulted in injury.⁠ ⁠ Do I think this is a normal or even reasonable shape to put your body into? Not really.......I think it is possible to do it safely IF your bone structure allows. ⁠ ⁠ I can still do this pose today, but I dont practice it very regularly -- I may include it if I focus on hip openers in my practice and my body feels warmed up and ready. ⁠ ⁠ I love discovering what the human body is capable of, but am not willing to compromise my physical health in the pursuit.⁠ ⁠ It all comes down to mindfulness and discernment....⁠ ⁠ Are there poses like this in your practice? Mortar and Pestle your hips! I got this concept from one of my NYC mentors of using the head of the femur as a pestle in the socket of the hip (mortar) in order to break $h*+ up, bring in fluid, nutrients and create space for centralizing the head of the femur squarely in the socket for easy efficient movement. This can be done in SOOOO many ways but here are two easy peesy examples... First video I’m keeping my torso (ribs + pelvis) aligned with a long spine and moving my whole upper body over my femurs. Second video I’m doing the same thing but trying to keep my knees from moving and just articulate my pelvis sliding over the femur heads. I’m using my deep core muscles, it’s super challenging and I feel ridiculously uncoordinated 😆. I try and throw some figure 8’s in there and my brain almost 🤯🤯🤯. #flashbackfriday These are some of the last yoga pics I took of myself in yoga poses. I’ve never liked taking yoga pics. ___ This was the end of 2013! I had just closed my yoga studio in Union Square - born Bija Yoga + closed Maha Padma Yoga Temple. ___ I was recommitted to working out with my trainer @juliusmaximus24 (who took these snaps) and I was recommitted to getting my practice back in shape. ___ Owning a studio is gut wrenching, it’s draining, and there’s far too little juice for the squeeze. I lost my self during that time. When the studio closed I felt free, unburdened, and able to be myself again. Letting go of that yoga studio was one of the best things that ever happened to me. It made space for my yoga career to really take off. ___ Now with the pandemic I’ve had to say goodbye to another yoga home, but it’s made space for my teaching career to flourish yet again. Now I teach (and train) virtually and it’s been wonderful. I feel more connected to my students and more connected to my practice than I have in a long time. ___ It’s funny how when structures fall away, yoga always catches me. I’m not one for throwback posts or tripping down memory lane, so thanks for reading. The work in this movement for justice and equality is HARD y’all. There are so many ups and downs. My heart has hurt so many times. But one of the things that keeps me going is community, people, coming through. I haven’t seen or spoken to @rita_2_it in YEARS, ever since we worked at the same dance studio together. I reached out to her asking if she’d teach a community dance class for @warmnyc this Saturday and she’s pulling up. This is it. Not just the event or the class, but us coming together with our skills, talents, passions and energy to uplift and support the community in solidarity. WE SAVE US. PEOPLE POWER. Das it. So - I’m doing this for my neighborhood through September. This is an inspiration that has come out of (1) obtaining my 200-hr RYT certification after Practioner yoga for over 20 years- finished training just before COVID hit (2) my inspiration to teach while honoring the situation we are in regarding COVID. Outdoor yoga on our cul-de-sac. I taught my first class today, I loved every moment of it 💛 My plan is to move my class to my deck in October after we finish the re-do we’re about to start. Ready to go!💪🏼 . I can’t stress this enough, before you exercise you should always warm up your muscles. Why? Because this will lead to your long-term goal of LONGEVITY! If we want to be able to do what we love for as long as we can, we should take care of our body! . Here I put together my basic 15 minute warm up (this video is sped up) working from the ground up. I like to start with jump rope to get the muscles warm before diving into any stretches, and end with jump rope to ensure that the heart rate is elevated before diving into our exercise! . The #oov is my favorite way to do side leg work. It provides support and instability at the same time and allows for isolation of those ever important hip stabilizer muscles. I’ve added some internal/external rotation at the end of the leg series. ✨ I love finishing it off with some oblique work.
