If you google “How many died #911?” You will see that a total of 2977 people were killed. I cannot imagine the pain of their families and loved ones. * Do you also know how many people were killed because of 9/11? How many lives have changed?The numbers and stories are countless. * Your 9/11 became their never-ending nightmare, from Iraq to Afghanistan the damage is irreparable, psychological as well as physical. And while their pain will never be comparable to mine, 9/11 changed the 11 y/o girl, who saw on TV the planes crash into the twin towers, not understanding what that had to do with her family’s religion & their origin or politics in general. She didn’t understand why Afg. was suddenly all over the news: not one Afghan was on the plane & Bin Laden was Saudi. This young girl will never forget the following days at school and the ever-lasting comments from her peers. “The girl from the Taliban camp” “Muslims are so barbaric”. And while it was all “jokes and fun” she didn’t enjoy it much. She preferred comments, like “you are not that kind of Afghan/Muslim, your family is different - we like you but not them”. Comments she won’t stand a minute today. * She remembers how the terms Afghan and Muslim were used interchangeably. She knew she had certain privileges that other Afghans/Muslims didn’t have, yet she wished from the bottom of her heart she were different. Little did that girl know she would be proud of her heritage one day. * She wonders: How many of our phones were traced? How many young Muslim boys were observed by the government because they were studying chemistry or similar? How many womxn and girls were harassed because of their headscarf? How many Sikhs were harassed because people thought they were Muslims? Heal... The vibe of the world right now is that we should be taking time out to become introspective, quieten the mind, reassess and slow down. I dont know about you but Im currently in overdrive with my feelings and thoughts. So much so that Ive actually stopped writing. This is not a bad thing. This is not writers block. This is me processing everything in and around me. Perhaps, this is what healing looks like. Healing is like a puzzle (a damn hard one at that) strewn across the floor. Your driving force is the end result on the box. Some days youre super motivated and make great progress. Some days youre not, preferring just to cry. And some days you want to set that puzzle alight because results seem so far out of reach. Consumed with the countless starts and stops, little by little, it actually begins to take shape. Abstract becomes concrete. Reality shapes into tangibles. So in essence what Im trying to say is that its work, possibly the hardest and revealing and confronting Ive ever known - but Im ready. Were, collectively, stepping into a new consciousness whether we like it or not. All I ask from this universe is to give me the space to understand, the love to nurture my journey and the strength to work through healing old wounds and wounds yet to come because believe me the heart lives by breaking and going into the dark is a necessary evil.
