Encircled by trees, a young shepherdess gazes skyward, as if entranced by the crescent moon whose opalescent light ripples outward in ridged circles. This cameo exemplifies the Renaissance trope of the image made by chance, where a combination of nature’s serendipity and the artist’s skill brings forth an inchoate image. See, for instance, how the pale variegated agate evokes the nocturnal landscape, and how the sculptor Alessandro Masnago used the tawny butterscotch layer in the stone to foreground the shepherdess and her flock. Famed for his ability to depict animals, the Milanese artist even smuggled an owl and a snail into this scene—small anecdotal details that reward close attention. Carved hardstones like this were highly sought after by Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. Such an image of a shepherdess in repose might have elicited a desire in a male patron to be her—to take her place, as it were, amidst the forested green. Perhaps someone like Rudolf II, amidst the great political turmoil in Bohemia in the sixteenth century, might have held this cameo up against the moonlight to admire its milky translucency and tranquility. A 3,000 year old Egyptian mummy foot with a prosthetic big toe. Made from wood and leather, it is one of the oldest prosthesis to ever be discovered. The foot with the amputated toe belonged to a woman who was approximately 50 to 60 years of age when she died. The prosthetic toe was designed with a nail divot, which likely signifies that aesthetic was an important factor in wearing it, especially since Ancient Egyptians often wore sandals. The prosthetic also helped the woman with her balance when she walked. According to Andrea Loprieno-Gnirs of the University of Basel: “By using a sophisticated way of fixing the individual parts of the prosthesis to each other, the artificial limb had a balancing effect and gave, to some extent, a freedom of movement. “Based on our scientific examinations, our team was able to verify at least four materials used for manufacturing the prosthetic device. The tablet was authenticated by Oxford Authentication using thermoluminescence or TL dating method on May 14th, 2019. The result of the authentication confirms that the date of the firing was between 2,300 and 3,600 years ago, that is, 1,600 BCE to 300 BCE. As I’m stuck in lockdown like everyone else and getting itchier feet by the day, I thought I’d flex my photographic muscles with a stroll down memory lane. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up my camera so I thought I’d do some reflecting on some of my past experiences as a photographer and share some of the things I have collected from my travels, picked up off the ground mostly, to objects I have been given along my journey through life. Things that are not of any real monetary value but things that are the most value to me. Objects that live on my shelves or table tops here are without exception beautiful to me either because they simply are just that or that they trigger a memory I’d rather keep than forget. I have a letter that was written on October 20th in Paris 1900 from my Great Great Grandfather Rennie Hartley to a girl called Kime . The letter is simple, in it he says the letter ‘is a matter of great importance” It is a letter of proposal. He had met her only once, In the envelope is a photograph of him taken in Burnley in Lancashire. A Victorian version of Tinder…and the result of that letter ultimately created me and my genes. I have a sculpture of an inuit family that was given to me in lieu of payment for photographing artwork for a book, I have a Polar Bear claw and water taken from 20 metres beneath the North Geographic Pole, salt mined by slaves in Yemen from Timbuktu,.. I will start with a photograph of me taken when I was 5 or six when I was first gripped by the wonder of nature . I was with the family walking in the Yorkshire Dales , it was mid summer and very hot. I found a piece of limestone half buried in the ground, it was partially covered in quarts crystals. I pulled it out of the ground after a long fight, to discover it was huge and weighed almost as much as I did. It was and still is one of the most beautiful objects I have ever found. I carried it for five or six hours until I was utterly exhausted, almost to the point I was going to die with it rather than leave it. My Dad finally gave in as he realises I was keeping it no matter what and we walked to a nearby road and hid it for collection by car later that day. The geology - @martinrhartley on Instagram

Oldest art in Britain discovered in Jersey 🇯🇪 Archaeologists have confirmed that artistic designs found on stone plaquettes in St. Saviour are older than cave art, making them the earliest example of art in the British Isles. The stones were found at Les Varines between 2014 and 2018 and are believed to be over 15,000 years old. They were found as part of the Ice Age Island project, which was funded by Jersey Heritage and other organisations. River days aren’t just for floating, they can also be for rockhounding! Shale bed outcrops we found along the river had some cool pyrite nodules like these minis shown here 💎⛏ Fossilized baculites with a pyrite coating have also been found in this rock formation. МНЕ СЕГОДНЯ 30 ЛЕТ!! А мне исполнилось 30 лет🙈....Внушительная цифра не правда ли? А внушительнее, когда тебе говорят что ты распечатал 4-й десяток=)) Если так задуматься, то для многих людей именно этот период оказывается самым переломным...Для кого-то он оказывается роковым, у кого-то наступает кризис, а у кого-то наоборот творческий прорыв. А знайте, что пугает еще больше? То, что еще 30 лет и, мать его, уже 60....а там уже покупай себе кресло качалку и крем от гемора, сиди попёрдывай перед телеком (честно говоря я к такому не готов😅). Но....все это не об этом. Вернемся к нашим цифрам. 30 лет...много ли это на самом деле? При всей своей внушительности, это ведь не так и много...Просто подумай. Мы рождаемся и первые 3-5 лет нашей жизни проходят в неведении, мало найдется тех, кто помнит вообще что-то из этого периода. Затем 11 лет школы...ну почти все через это проходит...ты отдаешь 11 лет неведомо чему, под предлогом получения знаний. То есть...врядли это можно назвать жизнью ради себя и своей реализацией. Кому-то повезло больше и его родители отдали еще в спортивную секцию или какой-нибудь кружок, и зачастую, не туда, куда хочет чадо, а куда родители считают нужнее. Затем....5 лет универа в среднем и дай бог, что это будет опять же выбор ребенка)) А почему универ....ну ведь надо же куда-то идти учиться...такова система....ну и бонус: 1-2 года армии:) итого, считаем: в среднем человек освобождается в 22-24 года от всей этой принудиловки и уходит в свободное плавание...то есть на работу....и отнимаем это от 30...капец! по сути, я прожил всего лишь 6-8 лет...осознанной, своей жизни, жизни проб и ошибок, где ты все делаешь сам, а не по указке родителей....Поэтому...не знаю к чему этот весь разговор...но, на самом-то деле....30 лет, это оказывается и не так-то и много:)) #философиянаночь #городнаходка #25регион #30лет🎉 #мыслимысли - @gorovois on Instagram

The pandemic has our setup budget pulled pretty tight, but when the next two new cabinets arrive, Im finally have all of my marine specimens on display.
