Questa mandibola di Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, detto anche rinoceronte dal naso stretto o delle steppe, proviene dal sito di Sora - Valle Radice (Frosinone). Lo stato di conservazione delle ossa non ha consentito la datazione diretta dei reperti, ma si ritiene che risalgano a circa 70.000-60.000 anni fa. In questo ricco giacimento fossilifero il rinoceronte era associato a molte altre specie di animali come pure ad alcuni strumenti litici del Paleolitico medio. Questa specie di rinoceronte, diffusa in tutta Europa, è scomparsa dalla nostra penisola circa 41.000 anni fa. When Rhinos were roaming in Latium For the World Rhino Day, we present one of the fossil specimens of our faunal collection. This mandible of Stephanorhinus hemitoechus, known also as narrow nosed rhino or steppe rhino, was discovered at the site of Sora - Valle Radice (Frosinone, Latium). The state of preservation of the bones did not allow direct dating of the specimens, but they are probably about 70,000-60,000 years old. In this rich fossiliferous site, the rhino was associated to many other animal species as well as to some Middle Paleolithic stone tools. Lets start with the first heritage obtained from the country in 1979, the rock engravings of the Val Camonica, located in the province of Brescia, which recognized 140,000! Although, in reality, they have found many more then (approximately 300 000) . . 🎨 The engravings were made over a period of eight thousand years, up to the Iron Age (I millennium BC); those of the last period are attributed to the Camuni people mentioned by the Latin sources. The petroglyphic tradition did not end abruptly: engravings of Roman, medieval and even contemporary times have also been identified, up to the 19th century. Most of the incisions were made with the hammer technique; in smaller numbers those obtained through graffiti. . . 🐂 Sometimes the figures are simply superimposed without apparent order, but often instead appear in a logical relationship with each other, to illustrate a religious rite or a hunting🏹 or fighting⚔️ scene; this setting explains the schematism of the images, each of which is an ideogram that represents not so much the real object, but its idea. Their function is attributable to celebratory, commemorative, initiatory or propitiatory rites that were held on particular occasions, single or recurring. As I’m stuck in lockdown like everyone else and getting itchier feet by the day, I thought I’d flex my photographic muscles with a stroll down memory lane. It’s been a while since I’ve picked up my camera so I thought I’d do some reflecting on some of my past experiences as a photographer and share some of the things I have collected from my travels, picked up off the ground mostly, to objects I have been given along my journey through life. Things that are not of any real monetary value but things that are the most value to me. Objects that live on my shelves or table tops here are without exception beautiful to me either because they simply are just that or that they trigger a memory I’d rather keep than forget. I have a letter that was written on October 20th in Paris 1900 from my Great Great Grandfather Rennie Hartley to a girl called Kime . The letter is simple, in it he says the letter ‘is a matter of great importance” It is a letter of proposal. He had met her only once, In the envelope is a photograph of him taken in Burnley in Lancashire. A Victorian version of Tinder…and the result of that letter ultimately created me and my genes. I have a sculpture of an inuit family that was given to me in lieu of payment for photographing artwork for a book, I have a Polar Bear claw and water taken from 20 metres beneath the North Geographic Pole, salt mined by slaves in Yemen from Timbuktu,.. I will start with a photograph of me taken when I was 5 or six when I was first gripped by the wonder of nature . I was with the family walking in the Yorkshire Dales , it was mid summer and very hot. I found a piece of limestone half buried in the ground, it was partially covered in quarts crystals. I pulled it out of the ground after a long fight, to discover it was huge and weighed almost as much as I did. It was and still is one of the most beautiful objects I have ever found. I carried it for five or six hours until I was utterly exhausted, almost to the point I was going to die with it rather than leave it. My Dad finally gave in as he realises I was keeping it no matter what and we walked to a nearby road and hid it for collection by car later that day. The geology - @martinrhartley on Instagram

The origins of the Guinand company go back to the year 1865 when the two brothers Julien-Alcide and Charles Leon Guinand founded the Guinand Frères company in Les Brenets, a little Swiss town on the Doubs, the river bordering France and Switzerland, in the region of Jura. By this time, a watchmaking tradition had already established itself in the region of Jura as many French watchmakers had already settled there during the French Revolution. In this rural region of French-speaking Switzerland, the Guinand brothers began manufacturing their watches that they mainly sold in Germany, Scandinavia and the USA. And in the first few years, business was booming. With the development of a new tachymeter chronograph around 1900, Leon Guinand was the name on everybody’s lips in the watchmaking world. This new kind of chronograph used a tachymeter scale to measure speeds from 150 to as little as 10 kilometres per hour. In 1945, at the end of World War II, Georges-Henri Guinand was entrusted with the management of Guinand Frères. The son of company founder Leon Guinand transformed the company into a listed company. As early as 1960, one of Guinand’s key accounts was the Frankfurt-based watch pioneer Helmut Sinn. With the development of his own centre minute counter, the HS 58 calibre, the passionate pilot and visionary entrepreneur decisively shaped the further development of on-board watches for aircraft towards the end of the 1950s. Since the beginning of 2015, engineering graduate Matthias Klueh has been the owner of Guinand. We know what youre thinking: these look like normal bricks, right? Well actually these bricks are from the cellar floor of a shop on Pudding Lane, which had burnt down during the Great Fire of London in 1666. Excavated by archaeologists in 1979, these bricks have lead us to some fascinating information about that fatal day. Found on the bricks were remenants of pitch - a tar like substance used for waterproofing boats (and also highly flamable). The pitch would have lived in barrels stored in the shop and once the barrels caught fire, it would have helped to spead the fire to warehouses along the Thames. - @museumoflondon on Instagram

The famous Elephant Clock (left) and the Candle clock(right) were two inventions by the Arab Polymath and Engineer, Ismail Al-Jazari. The elephant clock was a highly complicated clepsydra(waterclock) that utilized weights to power the gears and strings to mark the temporal hours. The Candle Clock on the other hand, had a mechanism that was activated by the burning of the candle which then caused a different figure to appear each hour. All of his work and inventions are beautifully and thoroughly illustrated in his book: Kitab fi marifat al-hiyal al-handasiya (The Book of knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices). It is impossible to over-emphasize the importance of Al-Jazari`s work in the history of engineering. Until modern times, there is no other document from any cultural area that provides a comparable wealth of instructions for the design, manufacture and assembly of machines. Al-Jazari did not only assimilate the techniques of his non-Arab and Arab predecessors, he was also creative. He added several mechanical and hydraulic devices. The impact of these inventions can be seen in the later designing of steam engines and internal combustion engines, paving the way for automatic control and other modern machinery. The impact of Al-Jazari`s inventions is still felt in modern contemporary mechanical engineering. Searching for local visual language from almost forgotten valley of Engadin 🇨🇭🦖🦖🇨🇭led us to turn the community house inside-out. Architectural elements became symbols and building blocks of an online videogame.
