We are six months into the new abnormal. Everything has changed. Everyone has concerns. We are all stressed out, confused. No one seems to be happy. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This whole thing? Its just exhausting. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Ive been immensely fortunate to be in an office that has remained open, continuing to see kids throughout the months of turmoil. As the proverbial dust has settled, however, the reality of our new situation is taking its hold. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I am really starting to miss seeing my patients’ faces. I miss seeing their parents faces. I miss them seeing mine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I understand and value the importance of masking up for our communities. Within the medical community, however, I see mask-wearing as a normal part of our wardrobe for a long, long time. I’m just feeling bummed out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Yes, I want a successful and safe vaccine. I want more accurate and faster testing. I want reliable therapeutics. But when will it feel like we have reached the other side? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I can see my patients whole faces again. “Let’s talk about ‘Periods’. Yes, you read it right! If a female cannot talk comfortably about her periods, how can we expect the society to? Fortunately, I am blessed with a family where I can freely talk about it, and dont have to keep my pain wrapped in a black polythene bag. This happened on a hot, humid afternoon in May. It was the first day of my 3rd COVID duty rotation. I was posted in a ward having 30 patients, some of them in critical condition. I donned my PPE, entered the ward, and started my routine work of checking patients. I was feeling a little bloated, and had a slight pain in my lower abdomen. Yes, I was nearing the end of my menstrual cycle and was ‘prepared’ for it; but, I was praying that my periods should not start during my 6 hour duty, since the PPE alone was enough to make one uncomfortable and dehydrated. Half an hour later, one of the patients started feeling breathless. As I got up from my chair and approached the patient, I realized that my periods said ‘hello!’ to me. I had sudden cramps in my abdomen- a situation all girls can relate to! I checked the vitals of the patient and tried to stabilize him. The patient was worsening… so were my cramps. Finding another resident doctor to replace me would have taken almost an hour, and wasted one more PPE. I didnt want to leave my patient unattended for such a long time. I told myself, ‘Ill bear the cramps’. After 15-20 minutes, the patient’s vitals improved; I went back to my chair, rested for a while and continued my duty. I had to endure the pain and bleeding for 5 out of the 7 days of duty. The scorching heat and the PPE, aggravated the discomfort. But, like all other female healthcare workers, I did my job. Girls, PMS and periods are tough. But were tougher, right? Functioning with pain makes us braver. My 1st was an 80 year old man who was in excruciating pain with a blocked catheter. In between the screams, he was telling me jokes whilst I changed it. A few tools that I’ve found super helpful this year have been my iPad mini and Apple Pencil. At the beginning of the year, we traded in our old iPads for these new minis. During the day, I’m able to look up information using resources like UpToDate and Epocrates. I can also write notes using the Notability app which helps keep everything organized. My friends @vranpariya and @joshrosh recommended getting an @apple Pencil earlier this year and it’s been so useful in the clinic. La única forma de ganarle a esto será trabajando en equipo, aquí nos damos cuenta la importancia de cada integrante, independiente del protagonismo que tengan algunos. Para el cuidado de los pacientes son todos importantes! El personal de aseo, los tens, enfermeras, administrativos, médicos, internos! Nos tocará hacer tareas de todo tipo y a veces les tocará a los de más experiencia, pero en otras áreas, escuchar a los más novatos. Lots of people around me echoed that sentiment too 😔 I studied science for a year and got great marks because when I believed I could do it, and applied myself, it seems that I could. I got accepted to medicine the following year - While I have absolutely been in the right place at the right time and been supported by people who believe in me, as with a lot of careers, hard work, enthusiasm and dedication are highly underrated tools of success. - Mentors are more and more, truly vital in shaping your career. To the new nursing student: welcome to the crazy world of nursing school. You’ll probably feel like you’ve got this for the first few days… and then you’ll quickly realize the amount of work involved for the semester. Try not to completely freak out. It’s normal to be overwhelmed once you’ve received all your syllabi, assignment due dates, clinical dates, tests, exams, lab dates, etc. OH and don’t forget the chapters and chapters of reading. I’ve been there - it’s A LOT. So, here are my suggestions: Print off a 4 month calendar sheet and write out your entire semester’s due dates - this is a great way to visualize your heavy and light weeks You will not be able to read through every single assigned reading page - you’ll have to be selective. Look to see what the professor emphasizes in lecture + in the powerpoint slides - focus on reading THIS information in the textbook For all my visual + auditory learners out there, check out Khan Academy on Youtube. They do a great job of breaking down common nursing school concepts Don’t completely get rid of your ‘normal routine’ in order to 100% focus on nursing school.. you will eventually burn out 😔 Even if it’s 1 or 2 walks a week, a dinner with friends every other week, date night on Fridays… try to maintain some sort of school/life balance Annndd the most important tip I can give (I’ve already shared this many times before): DO NOT JUST MEMORIZE EVERYTHING - genuinely learn & understand the concept. It won’t do you any good to simply memorize everything.. maybe you’ll get a better grade, but you’re studying to save lives.. not to ace every single test in school - @yournursingeducator on Instagram

Since the rapid spread of Covid-19 pandemic in the United States, community heroes fighting on the front line such as police, health care workers, firefighters and media are especially hard working. The US-China Restaurant Alliance (UCRA) is launching an event to provide free daily lunch and evening bento boxes for the local front-line heroes. The lunch time will be between 11:30am-1:00pm and dinner from 5:00pm-6:30pm, welcome to call to reserve. Since the pandemic people keep thanking nurses and medication professionals . As a bedside nurse this is my job. It is in my blood! For years I have taken care of and advocated for infectious, sick, and dying people (and animals!). As bedside nurses we don’t feel like hero’s. We do it because we love helping and caring for others and wouldn’t have it any other way. As stressful as my job is (now and always!!) you couldn’t pay me enough to not work and the bedside with patients, especially during a pandemic. Thank you for all the kind words today and everyday. Were dedicated to doing whatever it takes to improve the lives of shelter dogs...including intensive snuggling! Our team got pretty creative to provide this puppy in our program, named Citra, with some extra stress relief. ___ Citra is a 2-month-old Great Pyrenees mix who we brought to Gigis from our rural partners at Jackson County Dog Pound as part of our Adoption Readiness Program. To get her ready for a new family, Citra received all her vaccines, vet care, and a behavioral evaluation before being placed with one of our incredible dog foster families. Were happy to report her foster just made it official and adopted this new Gigis grad too! Zoe Welham developed an interest in bowel cancer while she was working on a complex scientific research project in graduate school. As the inaugural PhD recipient of The Penn Foundation Scholarship, Zoe’s research will provide valuable new knowledge regarding the biological rules that govern bowel polyp growth – something which is still not fully understood. Comparing the microbiomes of polyps at different risk levels for developing bowel cancer, Zoe’s research aims to better understand how the gut microbiome influences the growth of bowel polyps. Research that she hopes will ultimately lead to a reduction in bowel cancer. Zoe will work under the supervision of the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research, Professor Mark Molloy. The majority of funding comes from national charity Bowel Cancer Australia, which has committed $6.4 million to establish the Lawrence Penn Chair of Bowel Cancer Research and will be supported by additional funds of $4 million available to the University to advance research into bowel cancer. Yesterday was my first day as a home heath and hospice nurse and I truly think I’m going to love it! My schedule is 9-5:30 M-F with on-call hours if my patients aren’t doing well or pass away. I’ll be acting as an RN and a case manager and coordinating care, meds, DME, and other medical supply delivery with MDs, NPs, RNs, HAs, LVNs, chaplains, social workers and more! I’ll also be spending time getting to know my patients and their families while doing my assessments and making sure they have everything they need and all of their questions are answered. I feel so blessed to be able to work with patients and their families during difficult times and to support them through the grieving process. Being a patient advocate has always been a passion of mine and I love that it will be a large part of this job! Thats why were so excited to be hosting our first group of externs from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine to learn all about Gigis! Last month Tsa, a fourth-year vet student with a Masters of Public Health, spent one of her two-week clinical rotations with our team learning about shelter medicine. She assisted with surgical and dental procedures, performed exams and biopsies, visited one of our rural Shelter Partners, created a simulator, and shared her own knowledge and experiences with our staff too. Juggling full-time work on top of wife, mama & home duties has been catching up to me and there are days where I don’t think I can handle it all. I think it’s important to share everyday struggles, as social media tends to only highlight the perfections of someone’s life. I’m on my third shift in the last four days & am ready to catch up on some rest this weekend (let’s be real tho- more like catch up on laundry & chase my toddler around) 😅 butttt I got my Starbucks in hand & am lucky enough to work a career that I love more than anything. Counting my blessings with my extra sleepy eyes & using it as my motivation to finish out the week. Hospitals are reaching max capacity & refrigerated trucks are in high demand as morgues continue to fill up in some states ..yet people still believe this is some hoax? . My name is Taralyn Adakai-Fotu, I am of the Mud people clan, born for the Salt clan, my maternal grandfather is of the Sleep Rock People clan, and my paternal grandfather is of the Bitter Water clan. My maternal grandparents are the late Betty and James Redhouse, my paternal grandparents are the late Pauline and Kay Adakai. I am from Dennehotso, and in this way I am a Navajo woman. Although I am from Dennehotso and most of my family still lives there, I currently reside in Southern Arizona. I am a Registered Nurse and a student. I hope to become a Nurse Practitioner one day and ultimately return home to help my people. As Diné people we are taught the importance of K’é (kinship). We are told to always look out for one another, and we are all family whether that be by blood, clan, or through friendship. I was raised with those values so when I heard the news about what is going on back on the Navajo Nation, it absolutely broke my heart. Various communities have suffered many losses. That of which includes the loss of family members, jobs, and resources. I have personally lost family members to COVID-19 and I had the virus myself. I can say without a doubt I have never experienced anything like it in my life. I have never experienced mental, emotional, and physical pain at the same time. I knew I wanted to help others, and more specifically, my own community. I contacted the organizers for the “Dennehotso COVID-19 Relief Project” and became apart of their team. Like a flight simulator for pilots, this technology allows the surgeon to practice various surgical procedures with haptic feedback. The feel of driving a guide wire, drilling the cortex, and inserting a screw is incredibly and surprisingly real. . . A multicenter, randomized, controlled trial study was published this year in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery on Immersive Virtual Reality Training. It found substantially improved skills acquisition compared to traditional methods in senior orthopedic residents. The mean reduction in learning time was 570% (thats NOT a typo). . . Resident work hour restrictions and increasing number of new surgical procedures make it difficult to obtain full surgical competency. The coronavirus pandemic has only complicated this with decreased surgical volumes and paucity of hands-on training courses being offered. Youngest of three sisters. Growing up I always loved being active, playing all the sports, hitting the gym and “keeping up with the guys”. Before sports were cancelled, I was actually playing in a men’s indoor soccer league and was preparing to compete in a body building competition! So, my story to becoming a tradie lady took a lot of courage and I had to trust myself that I can do anything I put my mind to. I’ve always been driven to try to be the best version of myself that I can be and understand that I deserve the effort I put into myself for my future. My passion for helping others and maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle led me to want to try firefighting. I took the initiative to move on my own to a responding area (outskirt of Sudbury, I chose Garson) and then I was able to apply to become a Volunteer Firefighter. Even though I am a short girl, my determination didn’t stop me from passing the physical test and interview. It wasn’t easy but I am so honoured that I became a Volunteer Firefighter. What a rewarding leap of faith that was! About a year later I moved to Lively, another outskirt of Sudbury and transferred to one of the stations there. All in the meanwhile I was working at the hospital in Sudbury, Health Sciences North, as an Occupational Therapist/ Physiotherapist Assistant. When I was no longer allowed to work on two units in the hospital at once (to make full time hours), I knew I needed to make a change. I took another leap of faith and trusted myself to try working underground to attain a position which would grant me full time hours. I was awarded a position where I performed a variety of duties including waste management, cleaning/ maintaining refuges and latrines and occasionally working on surface in the ventilation department..” To read the rest of her story check out our post on our Facebook page.
