Im humbled to see how many of my counterparts and leaders of organizations that I respect have found ways to help and support the larger community during this time. For me, as a small business with multiple locations, it has been important that I found ways to support the micro-communities around each of our locations. To do this meaningfully, we gave autonomy to each of our GMs to help identify ways that we could do this for the community around our locations in CT, NYC, and DC. Earlier this week we partnered with @meatballers to drop tacos & meatball sandwiches to the team at Colombia Hospital. We believe one of the keys to improving the lives of shelter dogs is investing in the future. Thats why were so excited to be hosting our first group of externs from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine to learn all about Gigis! Last month Tsa, a fourth-year vet student with a Masters of Public Health, spent one of her two-week clinical rotations with our team learning about shelter medicine. She assisted with surgical and dental procedures, performed exams and biopsies, visited one of our rural Shelter Partners, created a simulator, and shared her own knowledge and experiences with our staff too. Three years ago around this time, I was spending every night at this hospital bedside next to my Dad. He was battling cancer, he fought it like the true champion he was. It was the the extended family at Sloan Kettering that kept me positive through the most difficult period of my life. Spending my nights here and then rushing to Bully every morning to get it up and running so I could open up my first restaurant in time for him to see. Dad never got to eat with me at Bully, but I feel his presence with me everyday. COVID-19: Why we are temporarily postponing our events On Friday 13 March 2020, the federal and state governments met to discuss strategies for containing the COVID-19 virus in Australia. The advice from health officials to governments was that events over 500 people should not go ahead until the pandemic is contained. This move is designed to slow the pace of spread and keep our health system from being overwhelmed like we have seen in countries like Italy. Whilst The Makers and Shakers Market doesn’t strictly fit the criteria of a ‘mass gathering’, it also doesn’t feel right to go ahead with our April markets until Australia’s health and political authorities signal that this situation is under control. The phrase ‘uncharted territory’ has been used a lot and that’s the one thing we’re all experiencing together: nobody knows how this crisis will unfold and it’s that uncertainty which makes things so difficult as we simply can’t predict the outcome. We are acutely aware of how important events are to the livelihoods of our makers. Organising events is our livelihood and deciding to postpone these events will hit us personally very hard in the short term (and we can’t think of a business that won’t be affected). But our duty of care to the health of attendees and stallholders is paramount. Sadly, we are all facing some really challenging times ahead. Dubbed one of the most destructive wildfire seasons on record in Oregon, the recent wildfires have burned over 960,000 acres of land. For Ashley, store manager and Oregon native, the impact was personal: four of her store partners (employees) were evacuated from their homes. Acting quickly, Ashley reached out to her team to begin organizing care packages for them.⁣ ⁣ “The care packages had everything from food to hygiene products, laundry detergent, treats for their pets, blankets and crosswords to keep their minds off of the wildfires. My main priority was ensuring they felt supported and they had what they need while being displaced from their homes.”⁣ ⁣ Next, Ashley turned her focus to her community -- what could her store do to help neighbors in need? A temporary shelter and food pantry had been set up by the Red Cross at the Oregon State Fairgrounds in Salem for those displaced by the fires. ⁣ ⁣ “The day after the wildfires started, I reached out to one of the volunteer coordinators [at the evacuation center] to see how I or Starbucks could support. They said, ‘Anything helps, we need everything.’ So I went down there that day with 10 travelers of hot coffee and food donations to give to the evacuees.”⁣ ⁣ She didn’t stop there -- Ashley reached out to local Starbucks stores in her area to see if they’d be willing to help pitch in.⁣ ⁣ “Within a week of donating items, 3 bags of donations a day turned into 50+ bags of donations. The evacuation center was now overflowing with donations to the point where they had to make additional room. There are four parks to which I walk regularly, and when my dog was younger and more playful, I would go to my local dog park every single day. In that park I not only socialized my pup but socialized myself — if our dogs were playing, we were talking, and almost everyone I interacted with was someone I would not normally meet. SF Parks Alliance: The SF Parks Alliance is the only citywide nonprofit dedicated to parks and public space. They believe it is not enough for parks to exist for them to be successful — they have to be safe, welcoming, and activated, ideally by the surrounding community. They do a ton for public parks, from installing benches to screening films. I can say without a doubt I have never experienced anything like it in my life. I have never experienced mental, emotional, and physical pain at the same time. Today the Piscataway and the Maya Nation came together with allies of the Langley Park Civic Association and St. Camillus Church to help meet some of the existing needs in the Langley Park community, one of the most affected COVID-19 regions in Maryland. COVID-19 has transformed what our daily lives look like--whether thats our office space, how we get groceries, or the way we greet friends. Remember, you are not alone! When my feet keep trying to stay 6 feet away from other people and my backpack has few weapons: spare mask, hand sanitizer, and sometimes gloves. In honor of EMS Week, were going to be featuring some of our volunteers and introducing you to the faces Behind the Mask. Dave is an EMT and one of the Board Members of Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps. During the daytime, he produces films and marketing campaigns for nonprofit organizations across the city and around the world. (and you might have seen him on TV 😉) I love being a volunteer EMT because its a rare opportunity to give back so directly and see the immediate effect. In someones worse moments, were the ones walking in and putting on that oxygen or providing life-saving treatments. Towards the beginning of the pandemic, we supported many of our regular volunteers decisions to stay home. But because we cannot run our Food Bank without our volunteers, we had to reach out through other channels and thanks to @unitedwaykc, we were connected with some amazing volunteers, including Becca! Becca has been consistent and reliable. She always has a positive attitude. She has been an incredible addition to our amazing group of Food Bank volunteers, but unfortunately, yesterday was her last day with us. He has been a member of the ARNG for 7 years, and during this global pandemic he was activated to go on missions for CT. Some of those missions included building field tents for civilian hospitals, taking inventory of medical equipment for unit readiness, and helping out with civilians making sure medical supply orders for hospitals get completed properly.🇺🇸 “This is important to me because i joined the military to go out and help people around the world. With the National Guard, it made my reasoning to join the Army even more important knowing that I could do my job right here in my own backyard. Since the pandemic people keep thanking nurses and medication professionals . As a bedside nurse this is my job. It is in my blood! For years I have taken care of and advocated for infectious, sick, and dying people (and animals!). As bedside nurses we don’t feel like hero’s. We do it because we love helping and caring for others and wouldn’t have it any other way. In response to a shortage of their supplies due to COVID-19, I linked up with @RyanKeeley, creative director of Covalent Clean, to donate 40 gallons of hand sanitizer to NYC’s front-line sanitation workers. Our INKA♡CARES family went to the Waste Management facility and fed them with 100 INKA♡CARES meals. Employees working in the Waste Management industry are essential frontline workers that often go unnoticed. These sanitation workers are out here risking their lives to keep our community clean by taking the waste from all of our homes and communities. Felipe, the supervisor & manager of the site, has been a sanitation worker for 41 years. His hard work and commitment is really shown through the gratefulness of his employees.
