Hey :) . I had a client the other day tell me that this seems really slow and she heard she should be dropping 2-3lbs a week. I informed her whoever told her that is full of shit. Yes, the amount of weight one had to lose does make a difference. But even then, 1lb of actual FAT loss per week is exceptional! For some, even .5 a week is fantastic. You can do crazy measure and lose more, but the likely hood of you putting it back on is usually significantly much higher. About a year ago (when I was much beardier) I found my uncle Louis’s name on the Vietnam War memorial wall. A few months after he was drafted, he died in a firefight in the Binh Dinh province of Vietnam in 1967. Just after his 20th birthday. I encourage everybody to visit here at some point. Just reading the death toll figure of 60,000 doesn’t really illicit an emotional response in most people, myself included. It’s just too abstract. But when you’re standing in front of a massive wall that stretches off into the distance, with each individual name written out, it really gives you a sense of how many lives that actually is. Stay safe! *UPDATE* TOMORROW: Wed., May 13, Rosie’s Dog Beach will reopen, and to remain consistent throughout the city and with Los Angeles County, the City’s dog parks will reopen as well. The opening of beaches and dog parks for active recreation come with specific rules that remain paramount to limiting the spread of COVID-19. Beachgoers and those visiting the dog beach and dog parks must: • Stay at least 6 feet from others at all times. • Members of the same household are exempted. • Avoid crowded areas. • Wear face coverings when in close contact with people outside of one’s household. • Face coverings are not required while engaging in solo physically distanced exercise. • Provide adequate physical distancing of 6 feet or more when passing others. • Continue moving, without lingering at any one spot, except as needed for brief rests. • Stay home if sick. • Wash or sanitize your hands regularly, including before and after visiting beaches and parks. That’s because he was an unstoppable friend making machine who had the social skills of an ace politician but the sincerity and heart of a sister of mercy. Quite simply, he made you feel awesome. It was his gift. Behind the camera he was prolific and if you were blown away by a back page, chances are, Anthony took that iconic picture. If he knew you were in a stadium, he’d find you, take a pic and text it to you by the end of the game. A generous soul who loved what he did and made it all look so easy. The session took place from 7pm-3am. The Beatles recorded 45 takes of the song, which had the working title Happiness Is A Warm Gun In Your Hand. Marty and Z We are homeless down in Geelong but we couch surf a lot. I came up to the city because Zs pup, Bindy, was pregnant and got really sick. I brought her up to the Lort Smith Animal Hospital. I was so worried she was going to die but they took her straight in and operated on her. They saved her life. Unfortunately only 3 of the 9 pups survived... The bill was going to be around $3,000... but they wiped it all off for me which was amazing While Im in Melbourne Im living on the streets with Z. We keep each other warm at night... She is 17 years old and she is my best friend in the whole world. This story is from 3 years ago... One of the hardest hit groups during this pandemic has been small business. According to Yelp permanent closures have now reached 97,966 which is about 60% of businesses that have closed. While watching a recent interview on KUSI the owner of Thrusters, a bar in Pacific Beach, mentioned that he still had to pay music licensing fees, property taxes, and his liquor license. It’s no wonder businesses are closing as they collect no revenue and still have expenses. How can cities and states force these businesses to close yet still collect taxes? This weeks Star City Shoutout goes to Mark Davis, an artist and tutor that truly embraces the meaning of #WelcomingRoanoke! Mark is known around town for his wonderful artwork, but hes also a volunteer tutor with Blue Ridge Literacy. Mark began volunteering with BRL in November 2019 as a tutor helping English learners improve their reading and writing skills. During COVID19 he continued to find creative ways to meet with his learners and in March 2020 he became a part time instructor. Since joining BRL, he has created over 50 instructional videos targeting learners at different levels. This includes a series of informational videos that encourages adult ESL learners to share their learning experience with their kids! Mark and his wife have also given away more than 80 paintings for free in our community in an effort to spread love and acceptance through his art! He spray paints rainbow hearts, covers them with black paint and then sets the canvas on fire making for a unique piece of art that he says solidifies the image of love on each painting. Here is a cracker of a story. Someone phoned to tell me that a 6-year-old neighbour of one of our volunteers, knocked on the front door, asking if he could borrow a Wayside T-shirt. His school was having a “Dress as a super-hero” day, and he thought a Wayside tee would do the job for him, even if it was big enough to be a dress. I want to meet this little kid and give him the smallest T-shirt we have. I love him for choosing not the kind of heroics that “leaps over tall buildings, faster than a speeding bullet, fighting the never-ending battle for truth and justice etc” but the kind of heroics that are never accompanied by fanfare and brass bands. I know our Wayside T-shirt is cool, but I’m keen to meet a kid who thinks servanthood, humanity, and volunteering are more heroic than Superman.
