We are thrilled to announce that Perfidia by Sky Hopinka, co-published with the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College is now available for pre-order on our website (Link in bio). Sky Hopinkas Perfidia moves within the textured landscape of memory, both personal and collective, to address the founding colonial violence of the United States and its lasting impact. In a series of cantos, the book-length poem surfaces a first-person narrative amidst the stream of history and its accounting through the voices of ancestors and kin. Shifting registers between the embodied and the spiritual, Perfidias subjective syntax destabilizes entrenched colonial perspectives and concomitant descriptions of land, sky, sea, myth, place, and personhood. Perfidia sits at the center of Hopinkas most recent body of filmic work, which draws from the poems sixteen cantos and its previous iterations. These filmic works include the short film Lore (2019), the 2-channel video installation Cloudless Blue Egress of Summer (2019), the feature-length film maɬni (2020), and the photo series The Land Describes Itself (2019). Perfidia is published on the occasion of Hopinka’s solo exhibition Centers of Somewhere at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College (October 17, 2020 – February 14, 2021). The publication features a foreword by CCS Bard Director of Graduate Programs and Chief Curator, Lauren Cornell, and an introduction by Los Angeles-based curator and critic, Julie Niemi, who initiated the project with Hopinka in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2019, and edited the book. Hannah recommends: 📖 Feminism, Interrupted by Lola Olufemi - this is a refreshing read for anyone who considers themselves a feminist. Covering topics from state violence against women to transmisogyny, it challenges the way in which mainstream feminism ignores those who sit at the intersections of race, class and gender (and many more). It’s helping me to reframe my approach to feminism in a much more intersectional and interrogative way. Lipfon recommends: 📖The Clapback by Elijah Lawal - I’ve just started reading this and am finding it so illuminating. Lawal takes you through the evolution of negative stereotypes towards the black community and teaches you how to shut them down. Perfect for those of us who want to speak up but are afraid to or don’t know how! Bethan recommends: 📖 How to Argue With A Racist by Adam Rutherford - this gives you all the ammunition you need to clap back when confronted with racist stereotypes and slurs. Katie recommends: 📖 How To Be an Anti Racist by Ibram X. Kendi - I heard Ibram X. Kendi on Brene Browns podcast recently and thought he was brilliant, so headed straight to download his book, which Im currently reading. I am determined not to let the anti-racist commitments I made earlier in the year drift, and a big part of that for me is reading. Ive read some incredible fiction books by Black authors in recent months, but reading books that are specifically about antiracism work is really important to me. Bethan also recommends: 📖 Superior by Angela Saini - this is a masterful account of how and why science has, and continues to, enable racism.
