So I balanced camera at 4500 and gelled all the windows with half blue to give the world a cool tone and let the practicals play warmer. I also played off the reflectivity of the high gloss paint to give the walls life and texture when possible. My good friend and mentor @axlfilms recently was diagnosed with brain cancer. @jeremy_grant_ has set up a go fund me page to raise some money to help support his family while he undergoes treatment. I have been in the trenches with this guy and he is one of the toughest I know. Any little bit helps so that he can concentrate on battling his cancer and not have to worry about providing for his family during this tough time. We love you Axl! The story had a sense of timelessness and to us nothing has that quality quite like celluloid. Then the question became 35mm or super 16mm. The more pronounced grain structure of 16mm, the deeper depth of field, as well as the affordability of the 16mm stock really peaked our interest. I used @kodak 500T stock for the whole film and dropped in an 85 filter where it was needed. Here are some frames from my last movie ‘La Hija de un Ladrón’ playing at cinemas right now, nominated to 2 Goya Awards and 13 Gaudí, including ‘best cinematography’ 🙌🏼. A powerful social realism film, directed by the talented @belen__funes. We wanted to create a strong image, avoiding the sad desaturated look these film tend to have. Shot all handheld using the Alexa mini +16mm lenses, with the great help of the @arri ISP. Concept The mirror instills a feeling of intimacy. It signifies the continuous inner conversation Dameer has in the process of navigating through the past and the present. A plane attempts to highlight the feeling of emotional detachment although being physically connected. Both act as devices that delves into the intersection of acceptance and pain - in an attempt to create a dialogue about confrontation. The tender and intimate moments of the film culminates in the final scene of submerging the mirror in the ocean, representing the notion of letting go, and celebrating Dameers strength and resilience @dameer.dk Emphasise on orange (sun) & blue (freedom) thru out the entire music video to connect all scenes into a big picture. When we came up with the basic idea of a video for a guy “who just can’t go fast enough”, I wasn’t expecting @pukapla (director) and @andyhoffman.x (cinematographer) to actually just drive to Utah and buy a Fiat to film 🥵, but they did and came back with these amazing shots. And super neat watching how they and the very talented crew made the additional studio shots happen here in Oakland. Feelin a little guilty that I chose a turtleneck and leather jacket for Mac’s character, it was pretty hot those 2 days. At a certain point I put on the backup turtleneck and leather jacket ready for action in case something went down. Very happy with how it turned out and thought everyone who worked super hard on it did a great job of matching the mood of the song so thanks again, this was a ton of fun to do with y’all. The Zeiss CP.3 lenses continue the evolution of the CP.2 lens line. Again, Zeiss is rehousing their exceptional still photography lenses with upgraded irises. However, the CP.3 housings have smaller 95mm fronts, and Zeiss eXtended Data feature which allows the camera to record metadata straight from the lens, which provides valuable information to post including the lens distortion, shading, focus distance, T stop, etc. all in real time. Prep Day 🎥 The evening before we began filming our cast & crew from Arizona, California, & Philadelphia all met at @beam.la to get a head start on our production for the weekend. Lead by Director of Photography @justinjonesdp Gaffer @iamtamlam and Director @coreyhour we broke into groups to go through blocking, prelight, shotlist breakdown and A camera build on @mr.scottybaker’s steadicam. Before a single individual entered the building @johnvogt our COVID compliance officer checked each individuals temperature and made sure we were abiding by proper safety and sanitation practices. We had the pleasure of @kuf_spawn coming onboard as our armorer/weapons master and supplying us with a legit arsenal of weaponry for this film. With determination fueling us this was only the beginning of what was to come.. I know i aint perfect. And almost always i go into post and wish that i could have noticed that ONE detail on set. But we learn, move on, and go back into the next shoot looking into that one frame even more closely. Every corner and pixel of the frame to try to make it as close as possible to perfection. So every person, guy or girl trying to pursue cinematography, just know that it takes time, you make mistakes every day. A DP to my opinion has many roles and responsibilities, from leading their team- camera equipment and lighting- to wardrobe and makeup. Every inch of that photograpghy is your responsibility. In the end of the day theres no one way or right way.
