Wowee! This past weekend we took home the award for Best Student Shortwork at the @whisfilmfest! This is an insane and unexpected win for us! Our film New Washing Machine, was screened alongside some really excellent films in our block, each made by students from VFS, UBC, SFU, Capilano U and Emily Carr! Many of these schools have dedicated film programs with tons of camera and gear support as well as professional industry training! This is why it’s so insane that our film, a project made during my time at @ufvsoca, which does not (yet) have a film program, won the award! What @ufvsoca has going for it are some truly excellent professors that pushed me to bend the rules and make films and study filmmaking within a traditional fine arts program! @directormelanie was the first one to inspire me but there were so many others: @brenda.fredrick, Grace Tsuramaru, @shelley.stefan, Tersuomi Anzai, and Geoff Carr to name a few! Во что одеты будут артисты и актеры, откуда возьмутся актеры и массовка? Как их всех привезти? Как накрашены и расчесаны? Свет, звук, шаг... момент.. Но это - наш образ жизни и наша страсть... Behind the scenes for our @mxmtoon shoot - all Covid safe! Maia’s performance was shot with a tiny crew of 5 people in a field wearing multiple hats (and masks!). The kid’s scenes were all shot separately and remotely with 3 different DPs in different cities (each with access to kids) who had camera packages that matched each other’s. We kept lenses and filtration consistent across the DPs to maintain a cohesive look. Thank you @slmbr_prty the mastermind behind making this Covid shoot seamless. To get an overhead and downward lighting shot in pretty basic conditions, my photography stands were used to provide upright support and a cross bar in this shot I Am Scum by director @officialmorrisonproductions. Shooting in a derelict site, with no power and manually carrying all the gear onto the site was very challenging and required a lot of improvisation. The chair that the actor is sitting on was found on site and had no seat. We sourced a piece of wood & some vinyl from the detritus on the site to get him a seat. My good friend and mentor @axlfilms recently was diagnosed with brain cancer. @jeremy_grant_ has set up a go fund me page to raise some money to help support his family while he undergoes treatment. Now Im at a more secure stage in my career (having survived a pandemic) I can start to give back more. I also find elitist, self centred creatives who hoard projects, tools & resources to be a true burden on this industry and something I want to take a more active role in fighting against. Over the coming months Ill be starting to provide more paid opportunities for people (prioritising those from disadvantaged backgrounds) to get on set & learn a more DIY/independent approach to filmmaking first hand. While also providing more free educational content online. The platform for this Im still working out but it is in development. We return this Saturday to Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master from 2012, with cinematography by Mihai Mălaimare Jr. and, in particular, the use of 65mm film. Today we’re looking at the lighting in the jail scene. Dodd and Freddy have just been arrested and brought to the jail cells to await arraignment, and Freddy is having a difficult time coping with unfolding events. From being arrested, to his anger at the police for arresting Dodd, and his anger at Dodd for being arrested, the scene centers around anger and the absence of control. The cells were in the San Pedro courthouse. The space was small – a hallway, some cells, and all lighting needed to be installed. In the hallway were Par 64 Parcans, fitted with 1000W bulbs. Check out the hallway scene above for how this light translated to 65mm film vs the raw images closer to what the eye might see when looking at the lighting set up. Anderson chose to shoot The Master on 65mm film, with lenses needing T-stops of 4 and 5.6, so huge amounts of light were needed for every shot. The averaged footcandles as a base for this lighting set up is about 100fc. Inside the cells, Chimera Pancakes were used overhead, also with 1000W bulbs, while some Arri 750 open faces with chimeras were used as backlights. The Chimera Pancake is generally a great light, but in tight spaces with close-up faces it works particularly well because of the billowing diffusion, and the resulting even spread of light over the faces of the actors. In the above scenes, the Chimera diffuses the light evenly onto both Freddy and Lancaster, re-creating the illusion of poor ambient lighting, but still allowing the audience to see the faces in a softer, more pleasing light. On film, the light is clean and soft, leaving room for the full expression of both Freddy’s and Dodd’s rage.
