I don’t know about you but I was pretty excited to see some of my favorite industry events shifting to online formats this year. Lectures, music, business events. 🎞 It’s been one of the big pivots from the pandemic and I have a feeling it’s are here to stay. Even when live events return to the mainstream, virtual events are likely to continue to play a part in event strategies. From expanding sponsorships to amplifying brand reach, offering virtual event options as a part of live events may become a large opportunity for companies that serve the event industry. And I believe the decision to retain virtual elements for conferences, meetings and events will be mainstream for some time to come. NEW WORK⁣ ⁣ The idea of the scene was to have my character sat at a remote bus stop, waiting. Rather than having my character looking out of the scene like on the previous image, I wanted her absorbed into her phone.⁣ ⁣ Shooting the scene on a 16:9 ratio makes the scene feel like it could be taken straight from a cinematic film. LED panel through the window that brushed her hair and face, then a flagged off @quasarscience into the wall frame right to bring the ambient moonlight into the room and wrap around her face more. The wall was teal so actually created kind of a cool color temp! Fill: another Quasar, tungsten, bounced into the wall frame left. I love that you can spin these to direct the light more. Spun it and flagged off the background to amplify that practical lamp and wash onto the bed. This set up basically got us through all angles with minor adjustments. “… they have minds and they have souls as well as just hearts. And they’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty and I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for.” While writing this post, a lump swells in my throat. I think about how long I spent trying to prove to myself and others that I wasn’t just a heart, a beauty or a lover. I spent a long time hating my feminine identity because of its association with fragility, domesticity and frivolity. Growing up I heard passages like Ephesians 5:22 and 1 Timothy 2:12 and thought they preached that women were biologically inferior to men. I saw my male classmates answering more questions, making more jokes, and leading more teams than the girls and I believed I’d have to battle my way into intelligence, humor and leadership. To believe that I could be those things naturally seemed unbiblical. 2016 and on has been a journey of challenging those beliefs through prayer and research, which has been productive. But more effecting than that has been my broadened experience of powerful, smart, funny, ambitious women. To the girls I know who are fighting racism, directing plays, making films, mastering ju jitsu, teaching me philosophy and making your voice heard - thank you. This year I have never been more proud of being a woman or convinced that WOMEN CAN DO ANYTHING. It has all been through the support and examples of these women who show me that I can be as mindful, soulful, ambitious and talented as Jo March. I also want to proclaim my thanks to the good men in my life. In recent years, I’ve befriended and collaborated with so many men who have respectfully come alongside my creative vision and humbly allowed space for my voice. I hope that one day this is the rule rather than the exception, but these sweet men are setting that rule and I am so grateful that they’re in my life. There is so so much more I could say, but I guess ultimately the point of this is that women are incredible, men are incredible, and thank you to the people in my life who have helped me believe that. Because of you, the battle I was fighting for my own validity as a creator and a leader is won. ❤ - @lindsaylewis on Instagram

I played a cameo of ‘makeup artist’ in the music video ‘I Get No Joy’ by @jadebirdmusic directed by the one and only @jamiethraves and shot by the equally one and only Giovanni Ribisi. This #LaborDay, we want to give a deeply grateful shout-out to all the film production and post-production workers. Its easy to forget that filmmaking is a manufacturing business. The labor and hours are intensive, and often performed in grueling conditions. SWALLOW is a 94-minute viewing experience for audiences, but it was years of work for the filmmakers and film laborers. Our shoot ran 22 days, post-production took a whole year, and development/prep stretched about 3 years. The photos here, which only show shooting crew, are just a tiny sampling of the village it takes to make a movie. Whats not depicted are the multitudes of workers who are mostly off-set: production office, art department, costumes, hair & make-up, casting, locations, post-production, etc. MANY of these film workers are currently unemployed due to the pandemic. So please think of them today and every day you watch a movie or series. Wowee! This past weekend we took home the award for Best Student Shortwork at the @whisfilmfest! This is an insane and unexpected win for us! Our film New Washing Machine, was screened alongside some really excellent films in our block, each made by students from VFS, UBC, SFU, Capilano U and Emily Carr! Many of these schools have dedicated film programs with tons of camera and gear support as well as professional industry training! This is why it’s so insane that our film, a project made during my time at @ufvsoca, which does not (yet) have a film program, won the award! What @ufvsoca has going for it are some truly excellent professors that pushed me to bend the rules and make films and study filmmaking within a traditional fine arts program! @directormelanie was the first one to inspire me but there were so many others: @brenda.fredrick, Grace Tsuramaru, @shelley.stefan, Tersuomi Anzai, and Geoff Carr to name a few! Remembering pre-Covid times on set shooting with @porterunion for their single “Lie With Me.” * * * Collaboration is king. After meeting with these two to discuss a music video concept, I knew we had a very small window of time to make this happen with a fast moving crew. * * * 1️⃣ With a tight budget, we had to find a time that I’d be in town working with another client and film this project on my days off. * * * 2️⃣ We had to find an abandoned house that had little foot traffic to not draw unwanted attention to ourselves. * * * 3️⃣ We had to hire a stellar crew with a day off that was amped to work on a music video for the payment of a meal. * * * And 4️⃣ We had to shoot this all within one day, which turned out to be one of the shortest days of the year, shooting in early December. * * Aaaand we did it. It was the perfect storm that we navigated together and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results! I couldn’t have done without my incredible team that put PASSION before PRICE. * * * It was such a great time getting to work with these talented individuals. La Passion et l’intensité Si j’avais deux mots pour décrire ces 4 dernières années ce serait passion et intensité. La Passion c’est la facilité a première vue, Je crois fortement qu’on est tous guidés ou attirés par quelques chose qui est enfoui en nous et qui est par instinct passionnel. Cela peut être une émotion qu’on recherche, un désir à assouvir ou un objectif à réaliser.. Mais avec la passion rien n’est facile, rien n’est acquis, rien n’est figé, ce qui est sûr c’est que suivre ces intuitions amène vers un idéal qui est personnel et intrinsèquement liée au bonheur. Depuis 4 ans je donne toute mon énergie quotidienne à mon métier de filmmaker, à mon collectif @mountainslegacy et à assouvir des projets perso comme raconter des histoires au travers de films et de me fixer des objectif sportifs pour me découvrir intérieurement. Quand je pense à la vie, le deuxième mot qui vient assez vite c’est intensité. L’intensité c’est le moteur, c’est répliquer chaque jours un effort qui t’amène à être bon dans ton domaine, à progresser et à devenir un « Yoda ». L’intensité ça développe aussi des mauvais côtés, beaucoup de sacrifices, voir moins les potes, sortir moins, contrôler ses émotions et parfois ne pas les laisser sortir. En faite la passion et l’intensité c’est le pacte d’un bonheur éphémère à grosses doses. L’association des deux c’est la potion magique, qui amène une force phénoménale avec de très grands hauts et aussi des bas, des doutes, des incertitudes lié à un choix de vie différents. Mais par dessus tout, La combinaison des deux c’est énormément de satisfaction, beaucoup d’émotions et des souvenirs indélébiles avec des gens exceptionnels gravés dans la tête jusqu’à mes derniers jours. #setnotes extra: (Im away in Slovenia shooting - wifi not great but wanted to get these additional thoughts out) The third set was the hardest for me. I was struggling for it not to look like a studio set build. A with a white single wall… Sun provided by the 5k tungsten molebeam (a very convincing sun source for me). I used lots of nets to try and shape the light, to divide the beam and again light in layers. I wanted to hard light the edge of the guitar for it to reflect on the wall and create a sense of sun. I like to think of traditional lighting being “subtractive lighting”, meaning that you start with a broad wash of light then shape it to reducing it down and create the look. (which is what I did on this set) Then there is the “precision reductive” way of lighting … using smaller lights and lighting in layers (more like in the second set), but this is more “an additive way of lighting” - adding small shapes of light to build the scene much like a painter would (I know that sounds so pretentious - sorry..). In reality, you use both methods interchangeably. But I find it useful to break it down in my fuzzy OCD head that way. . . To get an overhead and downward lighting shot in pretty basic conditions, my photography stands were used to provide upright support and a cross bar in this shot I Am Scum by director @officialmorrisonproductions. Shooting in a derelict site, with no power and manually carrying all the gear onto the site was very challenging and required a lot of improvisation. The chair that the actor is sitting on was found on site and had no seat. We sourced a piece of wood & some vinyl from the detritus on the site to get him a seat. Behind the scenes for our @mxmtoon shoot - all Covid safe! Maia’s performance was shot with a tiny crew of 5 people in a field wearing multiple hats (and masks!). The kid’s scenes were all shot separately and remotely with 3 different DPs in different cities (each with access to kids) who had camera packages that matched each other’s. We kept lenses and filtration consistent across the DPs to maintain a cohesive look. Thank you @slmbr_prty the mastermind behind making this Covid shoot seamless.
