INTERNATIONAL TIGER DAY 2020 Since 2010 International Tiger Day is celebrated annually on July 29 to promote wider awareness of the decline in tiger populations worldwide and celebrate and support the conservation of tigers across the globe. We captured this image of a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae) last month within an oil palm plantation in the Leuser Ecosystem. If youve been following us youll know we are working hard with the resources we have to help mitigate and prevent human-tiger conflict along the border of the Gunung Leuser National Park, and remove snares that would mean certain death to a tiger. We are pleased to report a zero snare count on this months patrol. Tigers are a keystone species in Sumatra and without them the entire ecosystem suffers. Being the apex predator they help to regulate the population of forest dwelling ungulates which in turn helps to control vegetation eaten by tiger prey species. This is a vital connection to the food web and the ultimate health and balance of the ecosystem in which they live. Of the 5 extant tiger subspecies, the Sumatran is the most seriously threatened with fewer than 400 individuals left. The Leuser Ecosystem is home to one of the few remaining viable populations. “I contracted rheumatic fever at 12 years old, had a recurrence at 17 that lead to aortic and mitral valve replacement, then lead a healthy active life with a wife, 3 kids and a small plumbing business, until age 34 when I became symptomatic again and was told I needed a heart transplant. Part of my journey included 15 months on a Syncardia Total Artificial Heart as a bridge to transplant. During my time on the TAH I decided to become proactive about my condition rather than reactive and I completed the 4.2 mile Pats Run that honors former NFL football player Pat Tillman. On September 15, 2014 I finally got the call I had been awaiting and received my new heart. In the past I used to focus only in fishing, trying to catch the biggest and most difficult fish. I was only enjoying the moment when I landed the fish. But this trip things changed a lot, and I can say that I approached fishing in a different way, a way that brought me so much peace, joy and laughter. This trip was in Chile. For the first time I really cherished every moment, the people and all the beautiful things nature always showed me and I kind of took them for granted. I had the opportunity to meet very kind people in this country, I sampled their food and could really get used to it. I explored and enjoyed nature as never before. This morning I traveled to the airport and boarded my flight, just as I did on September 11, 2001. Nineteen years ago, I boarded a flight leaving the East Coast headed home to Salt Lake City. My flight was scheduled to stop in Denver and unlike most of the other flights, we were not rerouted but allowed to continue to Denver. We were not told anything about the tragedy until we landed. As we taxied the pilot announced that there had been an accident in New York. He told us a small plane had crashed. I remember thinking, “How odd.” Why would this concern us? As I stepped off the plane in Denver, no one had to tell me something was wrong. I could feel it in the air. Without a word, I knew that our lives had been changed but I didn’t yet know why. I made my way to a TV monitor and saw the flames. I quickly called my wife to learn the full extent of the events and within minutes, the airport turned from dead silence to mayhem. Today on #September11 we mourn those who lost their lives or who lost loved ones and we recognize the selflessness of our many first responders who rushed in, with no thought of their own lives. Después de un intento de traslado frustrado, llega a Senda Verde la noche del 29 de mayo. - El vivió por más de 9 veces en una jaula de 0,90m de ancho x 2m de largo y 1 de alto. Llegó a La Paz a cuarentena a una jaula de 2m x 6m de largo x 2,50 de alto, pesaba 25 kilos. No podía saltar a plataformas de 0,80 y 0,90 de alto. Una vez en la plataforma a la que subía con ayuda, se caía al vacío porque el solo podía concebir superficies planas. - Desde que está con nosotros ha estado recibiendo los cuidados necesarios y una buena alimentación. Ha crecido y ganado peso. My name is Fabian (@bf.paredes) and I am from Bucaramanga, Colombia. I am a Lawyer with three years experience, but in Australia I have to do deliveries with UberEats to live. . I have been in Sydney one and half years already. A cousin of mine suggested to me to come here because it is a very good city to make a new experience. Here I have the opportunity to see a new city and try new things. . First, improving my English is a goal I wanted to achieve while here. Also, I would look for opportunities to run my own business one day. Here it is very accessible to do it. Still I do not know what kind of business I would like to do. I am still exploring and learning. . When I arrived, I also worked as a dishwasher. The pay was not very good and the restaurant was very far for me. It was in North Sydney so it was not really worth my time to work over there. I realised I was able to earn more with UberEats. . During last few years I have travelled to many places. I went to the Blue Mountains when it was snowing, I also visited Canberra and some other cities. I really liked it. I feel that Sydney is already enough for me. I do not plan to establish myself in Australia. I would like to come back to Colombia. But first, I want to travel more and know some new countries. . I would really love to go to Europe, especially Barcelona. . One of my passions is walking. I enjoy a lot hiking and getting to know new places by foot. And this city is awesome because there are so many green areas and parks where you can spend a lot of time walking. . I am planning to go to the Gold Coast in December, if I can. Seguramente muchas de las personas que solía ver a diario de repente dejaron de pasar frente a él. Nos ha conocido de niños, adolescentes y ahora adultos; nosotros cambiamos, pero él continúa igual, tal vez más seco, quizá con menos ramas, pero sigue siendo el mismo, la misma majestuosidad que uno experimenta cuando está frente a él no ha cambiado ni cambiará. No es de extrañar que los cristianos hayan erigido una gruta a su costado, porque, hace unas décadas, caminar de noche por ese lugar, sin luz, sin casas cerca, por un camino de tierra y piedras, hacía volar la imaginación, despertaba el temor y muchos cuentan de apariciones extrañas y desconocidas. Beach on Saturday and Skydiving on Sunday 🥰💙🪂🌞 . . . . . @skyventurenh - What a great indoor adventure spot, especially for younger kids. Skydiving, surfing, fishpipe water slide and rock climbing, all very reasonably priced. They also have Adventure Days where you can do a 9am-4pm summer camp style day split between skydiving and surfing. Ari gave it a 10/10 and we can’t wait to go back. Alex was awesome, even more cool because he was a Marvel fan 🦸‍♂️ You arrive 45 mins before your time slot to get into the gear and go through the training/instructions. It’s actually quite exhausting as you have to constantly push back on the air pressure to stay balanced. Flying time depends on the package you book. Why do we delight in others failures? Why is there an instinct to gloat when others fall short of lofty goals? We often justify this- we say they didnt respect the goal, they were foolhardy or unprepared, this was hubris. Theres truth to this- but this does not explain why we even like to see the mighty fall. The rest of the truth: it is our own fear. The small voice in our head that tells us were not good enough, that says were not ready.  That tells us the next challenge is beyond us.  The whisper that turns to a shout to a thundering roar as we step closer to the precipice.  That tells us to turn around, to not go further.  If others succeed in areas were too afraid to tread, that voice is exposed as a liar.  That voice that, in a sick way, represents comfort, it promises us safety and pushes complacency under the guise of preparedness.  And it does keep us safe. It tells us train one more day, it tells us to sit down and think of our future, it tells us to avoid the pain and expected humiliation of defeat. But, lest we forget, nobody cares. That voice, that protector, is both savior and liar. It keeps us from harm, but it will never tell us were good enough. It will hold us back, it will make us question our own faith in ourselves. When others forge ahead, we MUST hope for their success rather than gleefully predict their failure, because their achieving the unexpected reminds us we can do the same. May 21st marks the 40th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back being released in theatres. My babysitter April took my older sister and I to see it at the old Palliser Square Cinemas at the base of the Calgary Tower. I think it’s safe to say the movie had an impact on me. Lynxes are being considered for reintroduction in Ireland as part of an extensive re-wilding project. These magnificent wildcats used to be widespread across the island of Ireland once upon a time, but were driven to domestic extinction due to loss of habitat and human hunting. In 1934, fossil remains of a young Eurasian lynx turned up amongst the findings excavated. Goats and sheep to help clear growth from Salinas riverbed in #pasorobles The city contracted with The Goat Girls LLC to graze approximately 15 acres of overgrown vegetation in the Salinas riverbed. Grazing started at Larry Moore Park and moved north along the River Walk to Navajo Road and west under the Niblick Bridge. The path will remain open to the community while the animals are grazing the area. A mixture of 250 head of goats and sheep arrived in the city a week ago. The Iberian Lynx population has risen since the last assessment in 2014. However, the population is divided into two separate sub divisions, with only approximately 50 remaining in one of those subdivisions. The population also goes through extreme fluctuations that heavily depends on Rabbit populations, making these organisms very vulnerable and susceptible for extinction in the near future. Although, a large conservation effort was implemented in 2009. The Spanish National Nature Conservation Institute introduced captive Iberian Lynxes as well as rabbits to try and regain the lost population numbers. We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains.  . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past.   . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats.  . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles.  . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. As one of the Zoo’s senior residents, Max the cougar receives extra specialized care from our vet team. ⁣ ⁣ Max is 16 years old, and in his golden years has had a tough time properly grooming his own back. As a result, he’s developed matted fur along his back, which could result in skin irritation and hygiene issues. Matted fur also can’t keep Max warm in the winter! Our vet team helps him out by shaving off that matted fur before it gets too cold so he has time to grow back a warm winter coat. ⁣ ⁣ While Max was under anesthesia, we also took the opportunity to perform a full physical exam. We keep a close eye on Max’s health, in particular his kidney function, which has been impaired in his old age. ⁣ ⁣ Max is now back in his outdoor habitat with his buddy Teeka.
