Great place to beat the heat - it was breezy and cool there today on the bay shore even though the rest of the world was 103 degrees. Its $6-7 for parking, but free for veterans I believe. They are part of the Museums For All program, so if you have a medi-cal, WIC, tanf, etc, you can show your card and get in for $1 per person for up to 4 people. Exhibits here represent CA habitats and try to show that saving habitats saves animals 💙 There are 8 main habitats in CA: conifer forests, broad leaf forests, chaparral, grasslands, riparian, bay lands, coast and desert. For taking pictures: a big, dark umbrella is very helpful with taking pictures, since it reduces glare and reflections off the glass enclosures (dont forget to turn off the flash, for the animals 📸). Rescatan un pequeño Gato Montés tras caer en una trampa metálica Ocurrió en Aluminé donde los guardafaunas neuquinos lograron recuperarlo de su estado crítico de salud. Recuerdan que los carnívoros silvestres nos ofrecen servicios ecológicos al controlar las poblaciones de roedores, conejos y liebres. Aluminé es noticia nuevamente por el rescate de un joven gato montés (Leopardus geoffroyi) que quedó atrapado en trampas metálicas. Una vez más la comunidad demuestra la gran red de personas que piensan la atención y contención de la fauna silvestre. En estos contextos se renueva una pregunta muy recurrente por estos lares ¿Somos capaces como seres humanos de compartir el territorio con otras especies? El animal fue víctima de dos cepos que le produjeron graves heridas al prenderse uno en cada pata trasera. Esto sumado al cuadro de hipotermia generado por las bajas temperaturas y las horas que permaneció inmóvil en la nieve, le generó un estado crítico de salud. El pasado jueves 9 de julio, una vecina del paraje de Abra Ancha avisó al equipo de Guardafaunas que había encontrado un Gato Montés atrapado en dos trampas que ella había ubicado para capturar a un ejemplar de Visón Americano, mamífero exótico que también visita gallineros. Sin embargo el hallazgo fue otro, el felino correspondía a un macho joven muy delgado que debe haberse visto forzado a acercarse a asentamientos humanos para buscar comida. Según comentó la vecina, el mismo Gato Montés ya le había atrapado gallinas antes. Ante el aviso se hizo presente Martín Salazar, de la Dirección Provincial de Fauna, la veterinaria de la Reserva Natural Urbana Quilquelil, Carolina Marull, que cuenta con una vasta experiencia en manejo de fauna silvestre y el Director del Museo municipal El Charrúa, Titi Ricciuto, siempre disponible para estos desafíos Se encontró al Gato Montés con graves heridas en sus dos patas traseras y en estado de hipotermia. Fue sedado y medicado en el mismo gallinero usando instrumental y medicamentos provistos por la veterinaria Gilda Vallejos. Es algo que se recalca tanto, pero la gente es necia. Al pasar por Punta de Choros ves a la gente frenar para acercarse a estos cánidos silvestres, ves que les dejan agua (lo cual podría ser un foco de infecciones), ves que apenas hacen el ademán de darles comida, los zorros se acercan y eso no está bien. Más encima oyes a la gente decir lo lindos que son, los oyes decir que quieren hacerles cariño. Está mal, hay que entender que son criaturas silvestres. Pero lamentablemente han ido perdiendo eso que los hace silvestres y somos testigos de un preocupante proceso de impronta. ¿Qué será de ellos ahora, en medio de la cuarentena? ¿Estarán valiéndose por sí mismos o seguirán a la espera de que alguien llegue a ofrecerles algo? Si pasaran hambre no sería por falta de alimento, sería porque las personas los mal acostumbraron a recibir comida fácil, haciéndoles perder el instinto de caza. Goats and sheep to help clear growth from Salinas riverbed in #pasorobles The city contracted with The Goat Girls LLC to graze approximately 15 acres of overgrown vegetation in the Salinas riverbed. Grazing started at Larry Moore Park and moved north along the River Walk to Navajo Road and west under the Niblick Bridge. The path will remain open to the community while the animals are grazing the area. A mixture of 250 head of goats and sheep arrived in the city a week ago. In the past I used to focus only in fishing, trying to catch the biggest and most difficult fish. I was only enjoying the moment when I landed the fish. But this trip things changed a lot, and I can say that I approached fishing in a different way, a way that brought me so much peace, joy and laughter. This trip was in Chile. For the first time I really cherished every moment, the people and all the beautiful things nature always showed me and I kind of took them for granted. I had the opportunity to meet very kind people in this country, I sampled their food and could really get used to it. I explored and enjoyed nature as never before. The photo of the puma and its cub was taken 7 yards away from me, of course my 100-400mm helped me get that shot, but trust me, they were reeally close. Cachais? El problema con esta especie #LeopardusPardalis es uno de los más grandes, si bien su estado de conservación dado por @uicn_sur los ubica en Preocupación Menor, es una realidad que en el tiempo que llevamos operando nos han llegado decenas de individuos de esta especie. Su intento de rehabilitación no es menor a 18 meses. Su mantenimiento en comida es aproximadamente $500 mensual. El equipo técnico especializado para rehabilitación es limitado en el país y las jaulas y entornos que requieren para que aprendan sus habilidades son grandes extensiones de terreno cercadas que no hay disponibles. Súmenle la depredación que existe de sus hábitats naturales. Los últimos ocelotes juveniles hemos tenido que sentenciarlos a una jaula para toda su vida ante la falta de centros especializados en rehabilitación en el país. Que podemos exigir de estos lugares? Si el 98% de estos centros son privados y hacen su mejor esfuerzo por mantener y sacar adelante no solo a Ocelotes, sino decenas y centenas de otras especies. Este joven cayó de una camioneta en Pedro Carbo, no sabemos cómo llegó ahí, ni porqué estaba ahí, pero ya se encuentra con nosotros y hacemos lo mejor posible por curar sus heridas y encontrar un lugar que lo pueda rehabilitar. यह तस्वीर एक तेंदुए के शावक की है जिसको कल कुछ लोगों द्वारा मार दिया गया. यह तस्वीर मेरे ही जिले पिथौरागढ़,उत्तराखंड की है. कुछ दिनों से यहां एक तेंदुए का आतंक छाया है परंतु इसका मतलब यह नहीं कि हम सारे जानवरों या उनके शावकों को मारे. अगर एक आदमखोर जानवर है इसका यह मतलब नहीं कि सारे जानवर वैसे ही होंगे. इंसानियत तो हम पहले ही खो चुके हैं. आजकल के समय में इंसान इंसान को ही मार देते हैं, यह बेचारा तो फिर भी एक छोटा सा शावक था. इस छोटे से मासूम शावक ने किसी का क्या बिगाड़ा था, जो इसे ऐसी मौत दी गई. लोग क्यों नहीं समझते कि यह भी एक इकोसिस्टम का भाग है. लोगों ने सारे जंगलों में अपना कब्जा बना लिया है, बेचारे मासूम जानवर कहां जाएंगे, जब यह लोग शिकार पर जाते हैं तब क्या इन्हें यह बात समझ नहीं आती थी की किसी का यहां घर है और किसी का यहां परिवार है. लोग बस अपना हित चाहते हैं. लोग अपने स्वार्थ के लिए किसी भी हद तक जा सकते हैं. मुझे पता है कुछ लोगों के दिमाग में अभी भी यह बात नहीं समझ आएगी, जब हमें खुद पता है कि हमें जंगल वाले इलाकों में नहीं जाना है फिर भी हम समझते नहीं और अपनी जान गवा बैठते हैं अब इसमें किसी जानवर की गलती नहीं है यह गलती आपकी है तो आप लोग उस का इल्जाम भी उस जीव पर निकालते हैं. अगर जानवर ही नहीं रहेंगे तो इंसान का भी कोई वजूद नहीं रहेगा, हम लोग आज जीवित हैं तो सिर्फ पेड़ पौधों जानवरों की वजह से. लोगों को बस आनंद आता है यह चीजें करते हुए. किसी की जान लेने में बहादुरी नहीं है किसी की जान बचाने में बहादुरी है. मुझे पता है मेरी बातें बहुत सारे लोगों को अच्छी नहीं लगेगी पर जो मेरे दिल में था मैंने वह बोल दिया, अगर आप लोगों में से कोई मेरे साथ है तो कृपया करके आप लोगों से निवेदन है कि ऐसी घटनाओं को होने से रोके ताकि किसी का जीवन बच जाए. अगर मेरी बातों से किसी को ठेस पहुंची हो तो मैं आपसे क्षमा मांगता हूं. –@i_himalayansoul (Neeraj Bisht) . . . @united_uttarakhand @uttarakhandnow_official @euttaranchal @weuttarakhand @india.wildlife @wildlife_india @natgeoindia @discoverychannelin @mfa_india @wctindia @indianwildlifeofficial @indian_wildlifes . . . #uttarakhand #wildlifeuttarakhand #savewildlife #saveanimals #saveleopards #savenature #indiawildlife #wildlifeindia #wctindia #wildlifeprotection #saveanimalslives #protectnature #protectanimals #savetheplanet #mercyforanimals #mfaindia - @i_himalayansoul on Instagram

Happy #MeetTheCarnivoreMonday ! Today, we share with you the wonderful and beautiful snow leopard (panthers uncia). This large feline is native to Central Asia with only about 4,000 left in the wild. They are frequently killed over conflict with agriculture and the decline that it has on their prey populations. They are highly also threatened by wildlife trade and poaching. Currently, little is known about the Api Nampa population, and filling this knowledge gap is essential to understanding the threats snow leopards are facing. To this end, S.P.E.C.I.E.S. and the Biodiversity Conservancy Nepal are planning to launch a project in the region to study the Api Nampa population. Gaining critical information about the Api Nampa population will allow high human-leopard conflict areas to be mapped and conservation strategies developed to reduce this conflict. RAT POISON & THE ENVIRONMENT: This male Bobcat was treated by Wildlife Care of Southern California @wildlifecareofsocal before he died and weighed in at 8 lbs where he should have weighed at least 20lbs - he was extremely dehydrated and anemic, he didnt have a chance. It has been proven by the National Park Service that big cats are predisposed to mange (through a compromised immune system), by ingesting poisoned rodents. The poison is stored in the liver further compromising the body; once the mites take hold and multiply in this weakened state, the bobcats immune system cannot fight the shear numbers of mites as they literally suck the life out of him. Rodenticides dont just kill rodents — they also kill the animals that prey on rats and mice, including imperiled species like spotted owls, San Joaquin kit foxes and mountain lions. Recently several of Southern Californias big cats, including this Bobcat, have been found dead with multiple super-toxic rat poisons in their bloodstreams. The California Ecosystems Protection Act (A.B. 1788) would greatly restrict second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides — the most toxic class of rat poisons — throughout the state. Theres a wide range of safer alternatives on the market today that dont pose such dangers and will have a better chance of success if the bill becomes law. Lets get this lifesaving bill over the finish line. Urge Gov. Its no secret I am Governor @gavinnewsoms favorite mountain lion. So I am glad he listened to me when I told him I needed his help--that all us mountain lions needed his help. Even this old cougar got the feels when he signed #AB1788 today to ban those awful rodenticides. I mean I survived crossing the 101 and the 405, and the @tmz.tour Celebrity Tour Van regularly trying to take my photo, but I almost died from eating a raccoon seasoned with rodenticides. How would you like it, fans, if every time you went to @in_andout_burger, you risked death for a double-double? Big cougar thanks to Governor Newsom, and my other friends who care about me @senatorhenry, Assemblymember Richard Bloom and @assemblymember.friedman for this legislation. This guy was in a backyard and was left alone for several hours, but would not leave; there was not a crowd of people watching him. Please see our follow up post for the entire explanation. •••••••• There’s a new kid on the block. This 2-year-old male mountain lion was treed by onlookers in north Phoenix. @azgfd had to intervene. Due to the proximity of bystanders, this boy couldn’t safely flee back to the wild. Once a mountain lion is in captivity at all, they sadly can never be released. They’re territorial mammals, and they require miles - up to 135 square - to roam. Chances of releasing a mountain lion in another lion’s territory, coupled with the high risk of human habituation or imprinting are too great. We are sad this wild one will remain in our sanctuary, but we are so grateful that AZGFD brought him to us so he can live. As you can imagine, mountain lions - not to mention bears, bobcats, coyotes, raccoons, etc. - eat A LOT. We receive no state or federal funding to care for our wildlife. Lynxes are being considered for reintroduction in Ireland as part of an extensive re-wilding project. These magnificent wildcats used to be widespread across the island of Ireland once upon a time, but were driven to domestic extinction due to loss of habitat and human hunting. In 1934, fossil remains of a young Eurasian lynx turned up amongst the findings excavated. After the coati walked by, Libélula appeared in the same location. This photo, one of our most recent of this female jaguar on the Northern Jaguar Reserve, was taken a month after she was seen together with the male El Guapo. We have been following Libélula’s tracks and trails for eight years. We are eager to see her again but realize it may not be soon if she is taking care of a new cub. Our team is motivated each and every day to make sure Libélula inhabits a place that is protected. She was named after the fierce aerial predator, the dragonfly. It has been a busy winter for lynx on the Anchorage hillside. The snowshoe hare population peaked about last year, and snowshoe hare are the primary food source for lynx. Typically, the lynx population peaks about 1 to 2 years after the snowshoe hare population. At our property, we have had a family with an adult and four juveniles making routine trips through our backyard. La historia de Vejpa el Puma. El 21 de mayo el puma ahora llamado Vejpa es retirado del parqueo/patio de la Gob del Beni y es llevado a CCFS Paraba Barba Azul. Después de un intento de traslado frustrado, llega a Senda Verde la noche del 29 de mayo. - El vivió por más de 9 veces en una jaula de 0,90m de ancho x 2m de largo y 1 de alto. Llegó a La Paz a cuarentena a una jaula de 2m x 6m de largo x 2,50 de alto, pesaba 25 kilos. No podía saltar a plataformas de 0,80 y 0,90 de alto. Una vez en la plataforma a la que subía con ayuda, se caía al vacío porque el solo podía concebir superficies planas. - Desde que está con nosotros ha estado recibiendo los cuidados necesarios y una buena alimentación. Ha crecido y ganado peso. La próxima semana lo moveremos al recinto más grande y entonces lo volveremos a pesar. - En las primeras imágenes se observa a Vejpa cuando fue trasladado y a su arribo en Junio. The Iberian Lynx population has risen since the last assessment in 2014. However, the population is divided into two separate sub divisions, with only approximately 50 remaining in one of those subdivisions. The population also goes through extreme fluctuations that heavily depends on Rabbit populations, making these organisms very vulnerable and susceptible for extinction in the near future. Although, a large conservation effort was implemented in 2009. The Spanish National Nature Conservation Institute introduced captive Iberian Lynxes as well as rabbits to try and regain the lost population numbers. Today’s #Specimen of the day is a very calm Bobcat(Lynx rufus) we ran into while hiking to Switzer falls in the Angeles National Forest. Native to North America and southern Canada the bobcat is an adorable adaptable predator that usually lives in wooded areas, semi desert and forest edge and swampy areas. We have some sad news to report. 😔 We’ve learned that an adult female bobcat and a subadult male mountain lion have both died directly from the effects of anticoagulant rat poisons (or anticoagulant rodenticides, also known as ARs). Link to press release in bio. . Both deaths occurred in the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains north of the Santa Monica Mountains this year. We recently received the necropsy reports. . This marks just the second time in our 24-year study that a bobcat, in this case B-372, has been determined to have died directly from the effects of these poisons, and the first time in 23 years. P-76, a subadult male captured in Northridge late last year and jointly studied by NPS and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), died of anticoagulant toxicosis in the Santa Susana Mountains. . “We basically never see this in bobcats, so this is an important finding” said Joanne Moriarty, a biologist who has worked on bobcat research for more than 15 years. According to Moriarty, an examination performed during her capture in January determined that she was in good health, and that she had given birth in the past. . Researchers have seen coagulopathy (uncontrolled bleeding) leading to death in coyotes, foxes, and mountain lions in the study area, but typically not bobcats. . P-76 is the sixth collared mountain lion to die of coagulopathy and the third in the last two years. He was captured and collared by California Department of Fish & Wildlife officers in November 2019 in an urban neighborhood in Northridge, just outside of Los Angeles. . In the case of P-76, his collar went on “mortality mode” the night of January 29, 2020. His carcass was recovered the following morning by NPS and CDFW biologists in the Santa Susana Mountains, north of Highway 118. As one of the Zoo’s senior residents, Max the cougar receives extra specialized care from our vet team. Max is 16 years old, and in his golden years has had a tough time properly grooming his own back. As a result, he’s developed matted fur along his back, which could result in skin irritation and hygiene issues. Matted fur also can’t keep Max warm in the winter! Our vet team helps him out by shaving off that matted fur before it gets too cold so he has time to grow back a warm winter coat. While Max was under anesthesia, we also took the opportunity to perform a full physical exam. We keep a close eye on Max’s health, in particular his kidney function, which has been impaired in his old age. Max is now back in his outdoor habitat with his buddy Teeka.
