⁉️ Is Your Gym Right for You ⁉️⁣ ⁣ ⚠️ One of the most underrated things about how far you progress in your craft, is what your environment is like.⁣ ⁣ Most of you guys are serious about your goals. Whether those goals are strength, hypertrophy, athleticism, etc, you have to really be honest with yourself and ask,⁣ ❓“Is my atmosphere conducive for what I’m trying to achieve” ❓⁣ ⁣ 🛑 When looking at a potential or current gym, the most important thing is to know your own priorities such as:⁣ ▶️ What equipment do I NEED vs just want.⁣ ▶️ Would I rather surround myself with athletes that are farther along than me or be one of the best at a less serious gym.⁣ ▶️ Do my goals mean enough to me to spend more money, or is this just a casual hobby.⁣ ▶️ Is there a certain demographic of athletes I like being around more than others.⁣ ⁣ 💁🏻‍♂️ Ex. Someone looking to go do cardio or go to the gym to have fun when they have time will have much different priorities than the person trying to hit a 800 lb squat who has a strict workout schedule and needs a lot of specific equipment.⁣ ⁣ Understand that these priorities will be different for everyone, which is why you MUST know the root of what you’re actually trying to do. Without knowing yourself well enough, you’ll never find a gym that fits you.⁣ ⁣ 🙋🏻‍♂️ My top 2 priorities for a gym:⁣ ✅ Be surrounded by people that are knowledgeable that I can learn from and/or relate to.⁣ ✅ Have quality powerlifting equipment so I can maximize my progress and train with specificity towards my goals.⁣ ⁣ Let me know in the comments what your guys’ ideal gym is and why you chose it! 🔥Get Bigger Legs🔥 - Follow @lionz_athletics - Leg day...everyone’s favorite 😁 - First, like every body part, higher frequency will likely yield better results. My legs blew up when I started training them heavy on one day during the week and lighter later in the week. Anyone who I’ve recommended this approach to has had very similar results. Legs seem to really respond to varying rep ranges throughout the week - Second, do your squats and leg presses with full range of motion. It’s very easy to focus on adding weight each week while your range of motion keeps getting shorter and shorter. Before you know it, you’re doing half reps and really short changing yourself - Lastly, let’s face it. Training legs is hard. Most people don’t enjoy it and a lot of people just “go through the motions” with some leg extensions, leg curls, leg presses and call it a day. A lot of people who do actually squat barely push themselves and just seem to do it to say they did it. I’m not saying you should push yourself on legs to the point where you throw up but I often do feel nauseous on leg days especially doing higher reps. LEGS & HAMSTRINGS WORKOUT! - 1.Band Forward Lunge - Anchor the band to the bottom of a post, then loop the band around your hips. Start a few ft. away so that there is constant tension on the band. Perform a forward lunge, pressing your hips forward/through the band. Sets/Reps: 4x15ea. - 2.Band Pull-Thru Squats - Using the same band. Either grip the loop of the band or use a small DB as a handle. Start a few ft. away with a wide stance, only this time reaching in between your legs while squatting feeling a stretch in your hams/glutes then pressing/thrusting up through your hips. Sets/Reps: 4x15. - 3.Lying Single Leg HamCurl - Anchor a light band to the bottom of a post then loop the band around your ankle while lying a few ft away on your stomach. Perform a single leg hamstring curl pausing each rep at the top! Sets/Reps: 4x12-15ea. - 4.Band Belt Squats - Anchor a heavy or multiple bands to the bottom of a post in front of you. Step inside the loops and place the bands around your hips. Take a few steps back, and perform a belt squat! The bands will be pulling inward so really emphasize and push your Hips/Glutes back! Sets/Reps: 4x15. - 5.Standing Leg Presses - Anchor the band to the top of a post, then step on the loop of the band so that it’s in the mid of your foot. Perform leg presses, pushing the band down and back (like a kickback). Sets/Reps: 3x20ea. - 6.Seated Single Leg HamCurl - Anchor a light band to the bottom of a post and then loop it around your ankle. Sit in a chat or bench (if you are tall use a pad or books to elevated you or the chair so that your foot can hang slightly off the ground) and perform a seated ham curl by pulling your heel all the way in squeezing the hamstring! Water depletion, should you or shouldnt you? ⠀⁠ I still see to this day tons of athletes during their Peak Week pounding gallons of water in the beginning of the week, then tapering off to nearly nothing come show day with the idea that they are going to DRY OUT and thus look leaner on stage. Now, lets talk about this... Your muscles are 75% water. In our bodies we actually have far more water inside the cell as opposed to outside of it. This means more water will always be stored in the muscle versus under the skin. In a feeble attempt to somehow dehydrate until you lose the subcutaneous water you will actually deplete the water stored in your muscles long before you ever get to the water under the skin. This means as your muscles deplete water, your muscles also flatten. Guess what the most important part of any division in this sport is? Muscle. Doesnt make much sense does it? End result is your muscles look flat, you still have this water (tell you more in a second) you couldnt deplete and now you probably feel like garbage trying to present on stage. Not to mention its extremely dangerous. Ill tell you the truth about my clients on @teamfflex ZERO of them have ever done a water depletion. Most of them are still drinking a gallon or more on actual competition day. We never load water and we never cut it either. Science now shows that this practice is not only ineffective, but detrimental to your health. And remember, it wont help you place any better either. Facts 1️⃣This system is a major player transferring forces from upper to lower body. 2️⃣This system develops upon crawling as a baby and allows you to function upright during walking, running, acceleration and deceleration and change of direction; making it possible for your leg to swing forward during gait and creating stability during the stance phase of gait. 3️⃣This system also lives in the transverse plane, so if you want power, it lives here. . The posterior oblique subsystem (POS) comprises the lats, the thoracolumbar fascia and contralateral (opposite) glute max. . Here’s a breakdown of this system and how it works. . Facts: 📍It forms a sling system from the shoulder to the opposite hip. Its major function is stabilization of the posterior chain transferring tour de force between lower and upper bodies and eccentric deceleration. 📍The action of these muscles provides rotation of the pelvis that would occur during gait as well as store energy to create more efficient movements. 📍The ability to walk and do rotational patterns is highly dependent on the function of the POS. Last time I checked, all your clients, athletes and patients need to walk, and walking creates rotation in all planes of movement. This system is about creating sacroiliac joint stability and it is a dynamic way of doing so. . The biggest problems and how to correct them: 1️⃣Too coaches and trainers see movement one dimensional such as squats, lunges, hip hinge, push and pull, carries, etc. Not a bad thing, but you have to be cognizant of the 3D movement patterns. 2️⃣Common signs of POS dysfunction include shoulder pain, knee pain and instability, SI (sacroiliac) pain and jamming, a lack of hip stabilization and decreased ability for acceleration/deceleration in gait. . To build shoulders that take out door jambs, handstand push-ups are a great and easily approachable workout option. However, for many, a handstand pushup can be a daunting task.  In that instance, implement this handstand pushup progression from our original bestselling book, Jailhouse Strong. Progression to Handstand Push-Ups: STEP 1 Downward dog position (a yoga position), with head between shoulders. Drive head forward to ground and touch, then push up. Progression 1: 2 x 10 reps Progression 2: 2 x 15 reps Progression 3: 2 x 10 reps (5 second eccentric) MOVE TO STEP 2! Start elevating feet higher by using a small plyometric box. Keep head between shoulders and drive head forward toward the ground. Touch your head to the ground and push up. One reason to eat a high protein diet for individuals who are trying to lose weight is to reduce hunger and make it easier to comply with a caloric deficit. The research clearly shows that a caloric deficit over an extended period of time is the only way to lose weight, but increased hunger can make that a very difficult task. In the ancestral environment, losing weight could be a death sentence, so hunger creates an incredibly powerful drive to seek out additional calories. Therefore, anything that can help stave off hunger is a potent tool for a weight loss diet. One way to reduce hunger is to increase the volume of food that is consumed, usually by adding vegetables or other very low calorie-dense foods (sugar-free desserts, shirataki noodles, etc.). The other way is by preferentially including higher protein foods in the diet. On a per calorie basis, protein is more satiating than either fat or carbohydrate. Essentially, every calorie of protein that someone consumes will make them feel subjectively “fuller” than a calorie of fat or carbohydrate. This satiety effect is further enhanced by the fact that many lean protein sources have low palatability in comparison to other foods. As an extreme example, it’s much more difficult to overeat plain chicken breasts (a lean, low-palatability, high-protein food) than donuts (a hyper-palatable food with almost no protein). - @upperechelonnutrition on Instagram
